So I got pepper sprayed, beaten up, and robbed tonight.

Good to hear.

And as others said, might be an idea to check Craigslist/eBay for your area for the things you had stolen, maybe even call some local pawn shops. Do you have the serial code on the 3dsxl? Any way to track the phone?

damn, and people say I am weird for always carrying a daisho. It is EXACTLY for reasons like these that I wear it and I won't stop wearing it unless it becomes the law (in which case I will just stealth carry a wakizashi or something).

Glad you are still alive, man. I think it would be prudent to invest in some kind of self defence device.

I dont think any weapon helps if they had the element of surprise (pepper spray). Unless you train with your eyes closed, you might risk hurting yourself and others as you swing wildly. Worst case is if they take your sword...

The problem is that OP was wearing headphones, which is something you don't want to do when there is a high risk of being mugged.

If you are really concerned and worried you could look into buying a gun and getting a CCW permit, but thats a whole big can of worms especially on gaf.

How would that help in that situation? In fact, had he had a gun and shot around after being pepper sprayes (more than shooting around wouldn't be possible for him in that situation)
(a) he'd seriously risk hurting unrelated people
(b) he'd put himself at an additional risk of being killed with his own gun.

I don't think playing 3DS is all too dangerous, I'm doing it all the time. It can be a valuable thing to steal, but then again it only nets ~100€ if the thief is lucky. Most people run around with phones that are way more valuable for resale (I don't btw, someone who'd rob me would probably not be too happy, he could usually get around 20€ in cash and a 3DS with one game, also my clothes are cheap), so having a visible 3DS probably does not make you a more likely target. Some kids might laugh at you though.

How do you determine that risk bro? I need to learn from you.

Always be alert. If you're going around late at night in a bad/unfamiliar neighborhood, keep the headphones off and your eyes up. Look awake and look paranoid, but don't look scared. Walk in well-lit areas. If you have anything that could be used as a weapon and it's legal, try to display it prominently or even carry it in your hand (if it's a blunt object, not a gun or a knife).

We ran like idiots across a bridge over the beautiful Rhine. At least we were idiots with our wallets intact.

It worked, of course a couple of teenager muggers wouldn't run after us, that's too much work and draws too much attention.

It was early afternoon, by the way.

Nice.

How would OP not wearing headphones allow him to anticipate being ambushed from behind with pepper spray? Quit this fantasy that somehow you would be prepared if you were mugged, the reality is your ass would also be on the floor wailing in pain and then they would probably steal both of your swords.

Marrec looking to become Robin. Bout to form a GAF Justice League

Pft, I'mma jump straight to Nightwing don't underestimate me.

dead of the night, empty streets. Much higher risk than on a subway train midday.

*taking notes*

But what if the headphones were playing something to get you ready to kick some ass huh? How do you get pumped up before you take the streets to dispense some homegrown justice?

Like, compare your preparedness listening to Taylor Swift and your preparedness listening to the Theme Song to Hunter X Hunter.

The situation you're describing sounds like fucking Hamsterdam from the Wire. Is street crime really that prevalent where you live to warrant all this paranoia?

I suddenly feel so safe over here.

If you don't wear headphones and aren't deaf you will hear people coming up behind you

It's not about the song it's about situational awareness

Seriously, though, really sorry to hear what happened, OP. Thankfully the injuries don't look severe, although it sucks the healthcare system is fucked up in the US so that you can't even find out. I know it'll be hard to move on but at least remember they didn't take anything that wasn't irreplaceable.

How am I suggesting anything that's so completely out of the ordinary? I'm not talking about carrying swords, they're just simple steps you can take to make yourself less of a target. This is what I would do when I would start walking to the train station from work in the middle of Brooklyn at 2 or 3 in the morning carrying a laptop in my backpack. Usually the "weapon" I'd have in my hand would be a bottle of Snapple in a plastic bag or an umbrella.

How well does simply wearing glasses hold up against pepper spray?

Agree. Never hurts to keep in that mindset in those situations.

Difference is people don't carry their guitars around as a crime deterrent or protection do they? The guy started out saying he carry swords with him, it was only later he explained it was a long time hobby of his. Still don't agree that it's a normal thing to do, I get that it's his hobby but it's excessive to take them everywhere.

I carry a knife on me when I walk through the neighborhood. One time I was confronted by an aggressive big dog and was able to shoo it away but was glad I had the knife just in case. A friend of mine has also been jumped here. Pepper spray is also good to have on you if you're in a shady area. Some women carry it in their purse.

You can say that you're escalating a violent situation but the reality is that you are taking a measure to defend yourself from a threat whose intentions are impossible to instantly know when it happens. As for the swords deterrence angle, who knows. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't. I think some thugs might think they're toys/props from a distance lol

Fuck those guys. I hope they get what's coming to them. It's a sleazy trick. They spray you so that you can't identify them, and they're free to take your stuff with minimal risk of getting caught.

Do you know what Iaido is? When you find out you will know the answer.

AHAHHAAH!

So let me guess this straight in this fictional scenario you imagine. You walk around at night without any headphones on so you can hear everything around you while carrying your two swords for defensive purposes. When you hear anyone walking behind you, you immediately go into battle mode and place your hands on your sword, ready to strike. Then because you invested about +5 stats in Perception you are able to determine the difference between an innocent bystander walking behind you and someone poised to attack despite never turning around. Due to this wise stat build when a stranger pulls out their pepper spray from behind to spray you, you are able to swiftly counter with precise a laido maneuver cutting the pepper spray in half and immediately disarming your opponent.

Did I get that all right?

yup, I probably wouldn't cut it in half with a bokken though, I ain't that good. But yeah, if somebody is shadowing me and gets uncomfortably close and starts to pull out stuff from his pocket I would obviously do something instead of getting myself mugged.

Do you wear a scuba diving mask?

Of course, I am a certified diver

Bruv, you'd get shanked on an LA street. OP is lucky he got out relatively unharmed. It was a fear I always had when I used to walk past Mac Authur park at night. Thank your lucky stars and become one with the LA streets lol

Holy crap, thank the stars you're still in one piece! I wander around solo a lot myself, and a lot of times I don't think much about it. There's always that small fear that something could happen.

What can I even say? Try not to let it get to you too much? Be sure to keep your mind distracted with hobbies and friends. And please look into getting health insurance somehow. I was in the same boat as well, and ultimately ended up asking my father to help cover the costs (which he agreed to, thankfully).

Not that I can provide much help, but PM me if you just need to do some venting or something.

Here you go

http://imgur.com/a/PxbXJ the second pic is just a bonus ;)

Sorry about the hair cut, I am growing long hair for my NieR cosplay this year so I am struggling with a good way to groom myself. Also, I am just wearing my home attire, this is not how I walk around town (I usually wear jeans and such), but this is just a quick demonstration. And for people saying stuff like "swinging it around in front of your bedroom mirror like Naruto", I am doing Iaido for 8 years now so I know how to use my bokken quite effectively.

Holy shit it's like you're asking to get attacked. Unforgivable lifestyle.

Damn op, glad you're OK. This pisses me off though, fuck those guys.

Also, OP was wearing headphones? You should never do that at night alone while walking. It's easy to hear, or at least you pay a bit more attention to your surroundings without them.

No, I carry 2 swords, 1 long and 1 short. I have been doing it for 8 years now.

You forgot when the Final Fantasy victory music plays after he disarms his opponent.

That's fucking shitty man. At least you are safe. Now go to the police and report those cowards.

As for Mcrambochief if you walk on the street and somebody shoots you with pepper spray then what are you gonna do with a knife/sword or anything? If they are with more then 1 you just need to get out of there asap. Swinging a weapen blind is stupid and will get you killed.

If you are john wick i apologize.

I would run like hell, man. The problem is that OP got jumped because he was wearing headphones and wasn't paying attention.

He'd just end up shot up in USA tbh. That sword shit wouldn't fly over here.

I don't understand why everyone is shitting on someone who carries their training equipment with them. He said he practices daily so why shouldn't he carry them around?

It's not the fact that he carries them in-between his training sessions it's the fact that he asserts he would be able to and would use them in a self-defense situation AND that he specifically carries them on his person in the event of an attack. He's basically saying, "nah, that shit wouldn't happen to me because I always carry two swords with me and am a laido master."

I am saying that I wouldn't be such an easy target or wouldn't have been targeted in the 1st place

Sorry to hear this happened to you OP. There are some pieces of garbage on this planet that just take up space and oxygen. Hope they are caught and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

At first they took my phone, I struggled a bit I cried for help but nobody came, they kept on beating up on me until I just gave up. Overall they took my 3DSXL with fire emblem I just bought, I havent even played it, around 70 dollars in cash, my phone, a comic book and my back that my mom gifted to me.:(

This really made me angry and sad at the same time.

Some people are just utterly worthless human beings. Hopefully you can recover properly from this attack. It can be very difficult to restore basic trust after such an experience.

Sounds like something Mac from IASIP would say.
