Sony confirms PS2 emulation coming to PS4

I'm just happy that we're getting emulation at all. People are taking it way too far with requests for disc based emulation and memory card readers. Can't we just be happy that we'll be able to play these games on PS4 at all?

Huhu, you've not been long on Gaf or not paying attention huh?

We should be getting EVERYTHING because we deserve it, otherwise Sony is fucking shit.

Just watch this emulation being spinned as a negative thing for Sony if there is no disc based emu. Or even worse if Sony wants you to pay, the outrage is gonna be insane lol.

I'm looking forward to the crapgamer video about it

I still don't think it will be disk-based. I mean trophy implementation will cost third party pubs quite a bit of money and also required manipulation of binary image of the executable.

However I'm still okay if it is for PS2 archives only.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeah baby!

Now I just need NGB on XB1.

From what I see here, a lot of people are very happy about the ability to play PS2 games on PS4.

At the same time, it's certainly understandable why people would like to see disc-based emulation. The other two major consoles allow users to play their old discs. With that in mind, it's reasonable to hope that Sony would extend the same courtesy to PS4 owners.

The likelihood of PS2/PS1 disc-based backwards compatibility is essentially 0%.

Anyone who already owns PS2/PS1 discs likely also owns a platform to play them on. This would not be a serious driving factor for PS4 hardware sales.

Anyone who doesn't own PS2/PS1 discs but would buy them would be buying them second-hand, and thus channeling no money directly to Sony.

Anyone who would buy a PS2/PS1 disc is a lost sale from the PSN storefront where Sony is getting 100% of the revenue of the sale.

It doesn't make any sense whatsoever from a business perspective. It worked on the Xbox 360, because OG Xbox games didn't initially appear in their store and they were still selling those discs at retail.

What about PS1 emulation. God dammit if I can't play Xenogears legally again I'm going to freak.

there are sooooooo many cheap ways to play digital psx games. vita tv bundles with memory cards included are like $50 these days!

really glad sony is prioritizing ps2 for this, and disc-based compatability along the lines of what xbo did would be fantastic. even if everything's digital only I'm hoping it'll be a good opportunity for sony to cultivate a cheap visible market for the sale of older games.

also it'll be nice to try out dark cloud 2 for $10 rather than the $40 used it goes for.

If emulator doubles the rendering resolution like Star Wars games then isn't it pretty much HD remaster?
In the case of FFXII, I'd rather them do the remaster because that'll have a high chance of being based of the International version of the game which never released outside of Japan because that is the far superior version.

did that eurogamer article mention anything about the PS2 dashbord being emulated as well?

I mean, they kinda did it to themselves? They included PS2 classics with the Star Wars bundle it was bound to come out that they were, in fact, emulated games ha.

not really. we didn't know how those games were being brought over. it could have easily been a one time port of a few playstation star wars games for the marketing deal.

Yeah, I hope so too. I think they'll do it for a game that big, like they did FFX and X-2.

There aren't a whole lot of PS2 classics on PSN since the emulator on PS3 is game dependent (I think?), so at the least hopefully this means they support it better and add more PS2 games digitally.

You can't even use the PS2 discs?
I saw that PS4 was getting PS2 emulation but I didn't know you wouldn't be able to use the discs. What in the fuck.

Hell yeah! So glad to see them finally confirm it. I still have quite a few PS2 games, so I hope I can play them off the disc.

That would've made sense if it was like "Buy Battlefront, get the classic Battlefront games for free!"

Instead it's just a random batch of mediocre PS2 games (tied to the prequels no less) and a SNES port for some reason lol

Well sure, but they're not even hiding it, you're getting the PS2 dashbord and DS2>DS4 button configuration.

If Sony thought that nobody will notice then lol. They probably just didn't care.

Yeah, at the time they were announced we didn't know how they were being brought over. But with their release out in public hands earlier in the week it became plainly obvious about how those games were being run. Just kind of weird handling this altogether ha.

I welcome this as I never owned a ps2. Time to play some games I missed out on.

All this emulation does is give it a higher resolution right?

It's definitely weird they didn't announce it before the first use but maybe what you said plus PSX kind of being the perfect place for this kind of thing to get fully announced is what happened.

I am not even sure the PS4 disk drive can even read PS1/PS2 discs

I expect BC will be through Digital Download only, expecting disc-based emulation will only lead to MASSIVE disappointment.

They'll probably announce on december that FF XII is one of the first games that'll take advantage of this feature.

Just a hunch.

Digital only in HD and trophies would be way more interesting than disc based emulation imo, but of course both would be nice but I doubt it.
