Sony FY22Q3 Earnings Report

If the source is just me, please would like us to hold off on this point of the 19m forecast until we get confirmation. Might have misheard or might be a mistake.

Other people have heard the same during the call, they said they have a big PS5 and PSVR2 inventory and new forecast is 19m.
It makes sense considering they're doing an official relaunch with a huge marketing campaign.

It was also SIE'S biggest Q3 ever financially.
So great news for them.

10M of GoWR, plus the first Christmas season for GT7 and HFW, plus TLOUR, TLOUP1 and TLOU2 selling extra due to the tv show, plus PC ports.

Yes, makes sense.

Sony said in the past at least a couple times that they were confident on outperform their 18M estimation.

TLOU games getting a boost due to the show wouldn't have been included in this report. That boost will be reflected in Q4.

Largely irrelevant for multiple reasons, like average price and obviously the pandemic but if you want to see what the ps5 needs to sell to catch up

PS4 9 quarters LTD: 37,700,000
PS5 9 quarters LTD: 32,100,000

Credit to Welfare for the numbers.
Considering the pandemic and current global ecomony, that's quite impressive tbh.

So basically by the end of March that gap could be already almost closed comparing PS4 shipments in Jan-March 2016 vs the expected PS5 shipments next quarter.

Gaming revenue comparison:
  • Xbox = -13%
  • PS = +53%
Hardware revenue comparison:
  • Xbox = -13%
  • PS = +119%
First-party content revenue comparison:
  • Xbox = -12% (first- and third-party)
  • PS = +22.7% (third party)
  • PS = +43.45% (first-party)

R reksveks - Is this correct? I think we may create a new thread comparing the two company's quarters. But please verify if my numbers are accurate first.

Looks right, just wondering where you have gotten the first/third party revenue numbers for Sony from? I may have just missed it. I have only seen units splits between first and third party in the supplementary info doc. You can maybe do some assumptions but suspect the average first party game price this quarter is going to be increased over the third-party ones.

I would maybe also add a CC version of total gaming revenue
  • Xbox = -8/9%
  • PS = ~+32%

Would be also good to add Nintendo to the thread next week.

Also, I couldn't find one more data point so I skipped it: next quarter's forecasts. I remember Xbox is expecting a further double-digit (11%?) dip next quarter. Do we have forecasts for Sony's next quarters? Perhaps we can only compare hardware revenue forecsts?

Please let me know if you can add those here.

Those are units so maybe worth highlighting that. It also gets a bit weird cause it's just full games units and not dlc/mtx where as MS's numbers would be everything.

If I was to adapt it
Sony first party full game units - +78.8%
Sony third party full game units - -19.3% (was Takeshi from Bloomberg was very badly highlighting)

Using the existing revenue numbers (2571.4k) and the forecast (3630k), Sony is forecasting 59% growth YoY.
For MS, we have the following; gaming will decline high single digits, SW will decline low single

their Q4 (jan-mar) all time high for PS4 & PS5 is 3.3 so I doubt it
Keyword being 'all-time high for PS4 onwards'.
PS2 Q4 record is 6.1M - and it's historically relevant in this context.
While it was post-sales peak (2005), it followed introduction of 7xxx series (PS2 Slim) which suffered shortages in holiday quarter (also resulting in a rare win for Xbox in NPD that year).
Basically, coming off of a shortage period - inflated Q4s have been known to happen.

I’ve always thought Xbox being a Microsoft division is holding them back and that spinning them off as a whole or partially owned subsidiary was the path forward.
Back in the days of PS3 Sony didn't want people to know the hardware sales numbers either. But the people on the inside know how bad it was and opened the purse strings to AAA first party game at a major loss. They weren't in denial at least privately.

However Nintendo set the example for honesty. Because gaming is their main business, they can't hide the numbers without being fraudulent. So we know the Nintendo sales numbers for the good times and bad. And Nintendo is able to recover from Wii-U because they were honest with their flaws.

Microsoft really need to go public on their Gamepass numbers. Because the sooner we know how bad it is, the sooner someone could right the ship. Trying to pretend everything is fine, is not how you solve a problem.

Using the revenue (physical and digital) and the full game units, the average price this Q was 3907 yen (same calculation last year would be 2276 yen. The power of selling 9-11m copies of GoW at its price point and fx changes.

AAA offline single player games are like hen's teeth these days. Sony was merely doing its duty as a platform holder, filling in the gaps in supply for games that third party studios aren't making. Yes, it is nice that it made good money, but the important thing is having a balanced library of games with something for everyone.

Would love to know the breakdown between disc and digital PS5 hardware sales, they'll probably never tell us but I suspect it'll be like 90% disc or something, especially for all the people who paid scalper prices, you may as well go balls to the wall and pay up for the disc version since you're already getting shafted.

They only need 5.2 million more ps5's, they just shipped 7.1 million in q3.
I think they'll get there.
5.2 million in a non holiday quarter is absolutely huge, it would need to be touching records. The PS4's highest FYQ4 was 3.1 million and the Switch at it's height in 20/21 had a FYQ4 of 4.72 million, it will be extremely difficult.

We only know in Japan:
LTD PS5: 2.213.311
LTD PS5DE: 335.499

So yeah definetly a minority but it's not a phantom product at all, also Japan is behind other markets in the digital transition.

The reason for Xbox numbers is quite obvious, when they had nothing last year and major releases the year before: Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5, AoE...

Better hardware sales than i thought, i predicted 6.8 million based on sales data and they shipped 7.1 million. 2022 calendar year hardware was 2 million up on 2021 despite the poor CYQ1 which left 2022 trailing. For the fiscal year after three quarters PS5 shipped 12.8 million and needs 5.2 million to hit their target of 18 million which will be incredibly tough. After nine quarters PS5 trails PS4 by 5.7 million units but of course this is due to supply shortages and Sony expects PS5 to eventually catch and overtake PS4.

6.2 million now. They just raised their forecast by 1 million, you don't do that unless you're very confident in hitting it
If they can do it then expect NPD and European records to shatter. That would be a record, the highest FYQ4 ever was 5.81 million by DS in 2007 and the highest FYQ4 for a home console was 5.44 million by Wii in 2008 and even adjusting for inflation the Wii was around two thirds the price of a PS5 and DS less than half the price.

Although overall software was down year on year it was much closer to the previous year compared to Q1 and Q2. Software is currently tracking to be around 260 million for the fiscal year. God of War: Ragnarok helped push 1st party to 20.8 million which is an increase of 9.5 million year on year.

Considering the ever-increasing prices of console games (not interested in inflation unless my salary goes up by inflation), I'm more than happy to be "behind" in the transition forever.

Now that we know dics drive would be made an accessory, it probably won't matter anymore. Sony wouldn't want to abandon the weaker economies, so they would still make sure the disc player is either available or can be bought as a bundle. I see it as a good compromise. Having two separate SKUs to produce is not good long term.

Gaf was laughing at that 18M prediction for this fiscal year and sony just increased it to 19M lmao.

Next fiscal year they will be aiming to more than 20M for sure.

Basically everything is up and sony kind of relaunched the ps5 this week with this huge promo campaign.

It’s quite possible the ps5 to be outselling the ps4 launch aligned by the end of 2023 which would be quite the headline.

Jim Ryan has to go at this point. Delivering quality games like this, bringing the brand to even higher grounds, PlayStation productions taking off like this. I don’t know how much more he can stay up there /s

Seriously, all this said…the gap between both PlayStation and Xbox will keep increasing from now on. Just like last gen…it was by year 3 that it started to get more obvious.

That is the only reason. But people like to troll around.
2022 was empty for them.

It will considering you can get Xbox games day1 on PC and PC gamepass.
Xbox target would be 80m-90m if they don't fk up. Sony is seeing trajectory of 120+m if they keep this momentum.

Also global audience helps a lot. Xbox doesn't have that.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.

yea i remember they all put the laughing emoticon, and now Sony sets the target even higher lmao

These PS results are pretty insane even buy PS standards. 32 Million PS5's sold in 2 years and 2 months?

And that's before you factor in a light recession, covid lockdowns, and manufacturing constraints?

And a vastly cheaper competition to boot not to mention the Series X being more powerful and cheaper.

It's pretty impressive when you see what the PS5 has stacked against it. I guess the games are what made the difference.

Xbox still need to improve their image.
Xbox one disaster is still holding them back.

They can have the best of everything, and would still not be attractive as PS, due to that Xbox one stigma.

You have to give Playstation management, credit for how they are able to correctly read the current marget. After the PS3 gen, they have not made many financial blunders at all. Yes, not all they have done im on board with, but the numbers are irrefutable.
