Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

I still feel it will get the "launch in 2017, delay to March 2018" treatment but now I wouldn't be surprised if it does hit 2017.

I just wonder how the release would be handled. It obviously isn't going to be before E3 because they need time to hype it up and promote it. Fall seems too stacked with other third party games but God of War may be strong enough to keep up.

Thing is it's not like Sony consciously avoids fall season. Horizon, GT Sport and TLG were games that Sony was comfortable putting in the fall season, but just ended up being delayed... because the games weren't ready.

Really the only game that was consciously delayed due to its inability to compete in the same window was Gravity Rush 2.

If God of War can be ready by fall, I do think Sony will comfortably put it there, so long as it's not in the same week as Call of Duty, Red Dead, Destiny and Battlefront.

I can see God of War released next September or October. November and December will be suicide because all the huge 3rd party games will be out in those months.

Right, that is why I am hesitant. Why nip at the potential of the game? Youtube is Youtube but all those views for the God of War trailer can't be for nothing. God of War has the potential to reach that next level if handled correctly.

I think Q1 2017 is too soon. They still have to clean it up more than likely and they need to get that big promo going.
O shit oops I mean Q1 2018

Witcher 3 was in February done and they polished the hell out of it till release, which was in May. So I think GoW could release in May. Well I hope so.

Doubtful. They would still schedule it for a 2018 spring release anyway. As per most God of war releases.

As far as We know Horizon is their early 2017 heavy hitter with GT probably in the summer and Days gone as their Fall title. I don't see this changing. With Detroit in there somewhere.

Days Gone would get murdered if it realeases anywhere past the first week or so of September. I feel that's a february 2018 game. Sony seems to like the February slot for new IPs

I dont think Days Gone will launch next year, looks more complex than GoW.

This news about God of War is interesting, surprising and welcome! I was originally pegging it for spring 2018 but it seems that a fall/holiday 2017 release is plausible. Thing is I'm not sure Sony would want to do that given the absolutely monstrous competition coming next holiday season... Destiny 2, Call of Duty, Battlefront 2, Red Dead, probably Assassin's Creed and probably some more that we don't know about yet. While I do think God of War is a strong enough brand to stand on its own, I get the feeling that Sony will want to put this game in the best possible position to succeed.

So I'm predicting February/March for God of War after an extensive period of polish. Follow that with Days Gone in April/May.

Sure, but I also think Sony has no qualms delaying a game from fall 2017 for even the slightest of concerns.

I can see a potential fall release but Q1 2018 wouldn't be surprising whatsoever.

Mhm, August to October. Somewhere in there.

I figured but I wasn't completely sure lol.

I don't think so. This news means it's probably out of alpha, but there is no reason to rush to release it this year.

Why do some of you think Days Gone is Fall release. Sony has avoided Fall release, and I think so far it's been the right thing to do. We are also getting Ass Creed back next year. Fall 2017 is packed. (Although I think Red Dead is 2018 title.) I think Sony will continue avoiding Fall.

Going through all of the upcoming 1st and 2nd party games without release dates, I have this list:

  • GT Sport
  • God of War
  • Spiderman
  • WiLD
  • Detroit: Become Human
  • Dreams
  • Days Gone
  • Knack 2
  • TLOU Part II
  • Death Stranding
  • Matterfall
  • Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

GT Sport and Matterfall are definite 2017 releases, imo. Uncharted, Knack 2, and Detroit are likely out in 2017. God of War, Spiderman, and Dreams may be out in 2017, but may be moved to 2018. Days Gone is a definite 2018 release. TLOU Part II and Death Stranding are 2019 releases.

And WiLD... what the heck has happened to it ever since its gameplay footage at PGW 2015?

Fun fact from Sucker Punch's site!
Business
We were founded in 1997 and talked our way into the business. Lost a bunch of our own money on Rocket, but that game was the calling card that got us our next deal. We signed our next six major projects with Sony Computer Entertainment America and developed a long-term productive relationship with that team in Foster City. In 2011 we were acquired by Sony, and we’re pretty much the counter example to the typical horror stories about turbulent and destructive relationships with publishers and producers. If you want that sort of drama, look somewhere else. We currently develop games exclusively for the PlayStation 4 and we concentrate on a single IP at a time. Single platform + single IP gives us the ability to really focus, and to produce quality games of the highest level.

Fun fact – every game we’ve ever made with Sony, including our smaller/downloadable titles, have been profitable and paid profit sharing to our employees.

But when it's done, it is done. Days Gone will launch after GoW.
IMO It would be perfect when GoW will be released in June, just right before E3. In May we could get UC DLC and GT Sport, Detroit may be released in autumn. Dreams holiday.

Continuing the trend above, this is my guess to the release windows:

2017 Q2: Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, MLB
2017 Q3: Spider-Man
2017 Q4: Detroit: Become Human, Gran Turismo Sport, Knack 2
2018 Q1: God of War, Dreams
2018 Q2: Bloodborne 2/New Souls IP, MLB, Ratchet 2
2018 Q3: Days Gone
2018 Q4: Sucker Punch New IP
2019 Q1: Sucker Punch Expansion, Tearaway 2
2019 Q2: The Last of Us part II, MLB
2019 Q3: Death Stranding
2019 Q4: Studio Japan New Game

Every AAA developer has big layoffs after they ship a game then They rehire again when production starts ramping up. Polygon had a great article on contractors this week.
Yeah, it was just that others took the Sucker Punch layoff to mean something else was going on. Especially since people with senior positions were let go. I felt it was more of what you're saying though.

Every AAA developer has big layoffs after they ship a game then They rehire again when production starts ramping up. Polygon had a great article on contractors this week.

A lot of AAA developers do try to help prevent this though, by moving everyone over to develop DLC straight after their games ship and/or having multiple pre-production teams, so they can transition everyone over to their next project quickly. I think they still have layoffs once they ship a game but they're far smaller than they used to be.

The problem with Sucker Punch, from what I can gather, is they have no interest in expanding to multiple pre-production teams like most of Sony's studios. They want to be a one team studio and that's it. So they shipped Second Son, moved everyone over to its "DLC", First Light and once that was done, laid off 20% of the studio because they had no work for them yet. It seems dumb to me.

Insomniac are pretty efficient, and I don't think they got any other project for next year. I'm still holding out on Spider-Man releasing next year.

They also said they have the vast majority of their team working on Spider-Man too. The most they've ever had working on a single project.

Not seeing Horizon on that list

I'm not following your logic. Being efficient and not having any 2017 projects (at this point) doesn't mean they're suddenly going to release Spider-Man next year. It's their most ambitious title yet, it's going to take some time.

I think they expected to get to work on another inFamous immediately after First Light too, and with all their tools, foundation, tech there from SS, they could get to work immediately.

But I think it's highly likely that they're not making another inFamous, so going back to extended pre-production means that they can't keep a lot of talent just floating around doing nothing while they go back to think about the game idea before anything else.

Okay everyone, from the god of war thread everyone seems to think that a AAA 1st party from Sony should release in Q1 or holiday season? Why can it release somewhere in the middle? You'd think people would have realise by now that releasing a game in the holiday season(1st party or 3rd) you run the risk of suffering a sales drop

You run the risk of sales drop if your game has no hype/not generating excitement.

Two success stories this holiday season are BF1 and Pokemon, both games that from the market offset, has been successful at generating a lot of interest and excitement around the product.

And they also got their largest team ever working on it. I see no reason not to think it'll arrive next year. Of course it could also be released during Spring 2018, but I see no reason to think it won't be ready next year.

That would make sense but I find it hard to believe Sucker Punch's upper management had no idea what they were working on next.

Again, weak logic. Videogame development is a creative process, more people != short development time, especially since it's going to be Insomniac's biggest and most ambitious game to date.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has 1000+ people working on it but it's still going to end up coming out ~4 years after GTAV.
