Thanks for the list but are there 2 Horizon GAAS in production right now? I thought there was only 1.
There was an report in January about cancelled Project H at NCSoft that was mistaken for Horizon MMO. It was clarified next day that Horizon project goes by other name and still in worksOh, so there are two Horizon GAAS games still underway? I thought one got cancelled.
I still remember Destruction AllStars drama. The game got included in PS+ and received a massive price drop, because Sony suddenly realized no one would buy it. And it still died very quickly.
I'm trying to remember the story with mlb the show cause there was some incompetence on sonys part. It was a Sony exclusive for a long time and then san Diego studios was forced to make it multiplat or lose the license.GT7 shouldnt even be there because that's an ultra popular legacy game. Of course it'll do well whether it's purely SP with no mtx, or it has a huge online store. Their baseball game is similar but not on the list. But if all games count, then baseball should be there too as it seems like a successful annual sports game.
Looking just at newer games (excl. GT7 and baseball), the only big success so far is H2. The list already has a lot of red. But to be fair there are a lot of purple rows of unknown success till they release (if they release).
But even for the purple rows, I dont get a sense anyone is majorly amped up on any of them begging for a release anytime soon. Wouldnt be surprised if all of them failed too.
I thought so, too, but I was corrected in another thread. Apparently they are both still in production.

One is an MMO, probably gacha-based, for the Asian PC and mobile crowd. The Guerrilla-developed one is more akin to a Monster Hunter clone. Two Horizon Gaas games? Herman Hulst is such a clown
Meanwhile the market is saturated with Chinese slop that's making them (CHYNA) billions. How many $ Billions Sony lost on this GAAS bet?
Fucking hell
MLB the Show is ONLY a positive for Sony. No negatives.I'm trying to remember the story with mlb the show cause there was some incompetence on sonys part. It was a Sony exclusive for a long time and then san Diego studios was forced to make it multiplat or lose the license.
I guess not incompetence but another ding for them.
That was a call made by the MLB and nothing against Sony , 100% out of their handsI'm trying to remember the story with mlb the show cause there was some incompetence on sonys part. And clearly both are terrible ideas. One is an MMO, probably gacha-based, for the Asian PC and mobile crowd. The Guerrilla-developed one is more akin to a Monster Hunter clone.
Clearly two different products, serving two different markets.
Billions? It's really bad, but in terms of money they lost more *potentially* in other projects (some) of those studios could have done (and even finished by now). But the amount spent on all canceled and failed projects may not even amount to 1 Billion, specially if several of them were killed still halfway through production. How many $ Billions Sony lost on this GAAS bet?
Fucking hell
I remember it being kinda embarrassing for Sony cause this was around the Activision trial (or just before it) and their was alot of gnashing of teeth about whether or not Activision was still gonna be multiplat. And Sony was forced to take their only successful sports series and make it compatible with Xbox. That was a call made by the MLB and nothing against Sony , 100% out of their hands
Sony needs to realize they screwed up badly with the GaaS initiative and get back on track asap. It was a poorly thought out plan to begin with, essentially shooting a bunch of darts at the wall hoping they land the next fortnite. As if third parties themselves weren't trying this strategy for years and failing horribly. People bringing up GT7 and MLB as counterpoints is laughable, as if these games weren't always going to be made and sell millions. They were not part of the Jim Ryan "GaaS expansion".
Basically Sony changed their focus from being trend setters to trend chasers. Add in all the PC porting and they just come across as a weak company with no faith in their own business. They need to go back to what they were doing in the PS3 and PS4 generations, which is what resulted in the success they are having now with the PS5. I forget the exact quote, but one of the main execs from back then said they only make games that are the first of the their kind or make/fund games that need to be made but nobody else is willing/capable. Greenlighting a whole bunch of generic GaaS knockoffs goes completely counter to that. And this is the end result.
Cancel this and Marathon. Work on SP games with or without traditional MP. That's your audience.
Ya,I think some like the online Spider-Man game was nothing more than a conceptBillions? When their single player games cost hundreds of millions and take upwards of 6-7 years to develop They need regular earners in the portfolio as well.Cancel this and Marathon. Work on SP games with or without traditional MP. That's your audience.

The strategy they have employed sucks. They should have just purchased a couple of existing successful GAAS titles and left it at that.
Yeah something is seriously wrong with game development. Exp 33 shows what can be done. Spiderman 2 being the opposite.Maybe they should start by erasing from their minds the wrong assumption that a great game needs to cost hundred of millions. They have good examples of the opposite. Returnal, Demons Souls, Astrobot, etc.
Only spend big when the potential is big. ND or Santa Monica next big thing and that's it. Everyone else, within reasonable limits.
If their business model depends on high risk investments and endless development cycles, they suck at their job and must be replaced by people who don't.
The problem is you can't make the next Fortnite by imitating it. The next big game will be something nobody can foresee, just like Fortnite itself. That has already happened, when in September 23 most of the WWS nearly revolted, and some of those GAAS were canceled, but the effects are to be felt a t least a couple years more. Hulst has been effectively demoted, Concord flopped, 3 or 4 more canceled without even release.
But it wasn't so bad a bet, if you release 10 and 8 flop but you end up having Helldivers 2 and the next PUBG or Fortnite, they will think everything was worth it.
In the market analysis of New Zoo a month ago there were some things hard to palate. One of them that microtransactions amount more than game sales. Another, that around 10 games absorb more tan 50% total playtime, more so in PC. Finally, only 20% of players in console and 5% on PC played games released this year. With this in mind, it's easy to see how Sony, MS or whoever would try to have one of those cash cows.
But yeah, things are not looking good. Even Helldivers 2, very successful, is far from the numbers of those really big GAAS as Counterstrike, COD, Fortnite or PUBG.
Right off the bat they are in the hole big time even without that list of games. How many $ Billions Sony lost on this GAAS bet?
Fucking hell
Fortnite exists because it imitated something else. Thats why companies are betting on the next big ting being an evolution of a niche. The problem is you can't make the next Fortnite by imitating it. The next big game will be something nobody can foresee, just like Fortnite itself.
People bring up helldivers but as a gaas what has it really accomplished? It sold a good amount of copies (at nearly half the price of a regular game) but I doubt many people will be talking about it 1-2 years from now. It will just be the hardcore fans left playing.
I think buying Bungie was a good idea in the sense that they got a solid gaas with tremendous cross media potential in destiny, which continues to stand the test of time. But Bungie now seems to be screwing up badly with marathon. Still I think they will recover from it. But it just shows how irresponsible it is to bet nearly your entire first party output chasing gaas.
Losing money from the start.Just heard this today. Supposedly, Sony also changed the Fairgames name dropping the silly dollar sign. lol
I believe this is called an omen loldropping the silly dollar sign. lol
