Splatoon |OT| Squidstyler

The matchmaking needs work. How you gonna put level 11's and 12's against a team of 1's and 2's? They only got 5.7 % of the map. It was messed up.

I only found out that you can squidjump to the different kettles in singleplayer when I only needed 3 more to finish it. I had been taking the long way through all the completed worlds each time I resumed singleplayer lol.

So. That tweet from Nintendo wasn't for show.
Splatoon seems to doing very well in Japan.

A brand new IP from Nintendo doing this well on launch week is really the best news. Now I just hope they restock fast!

So, this time of day is the time of day that I seem to dominate(its also bedtime) when the level 20s from Japan come on in the morning I get destroyed.

This game is crack, absolute crack.

I just played through the saltspray rig on single-player, and I didn't realize you could climb so many of the pipes and boxes located in the middle! Four testfires and 16 hours of gameplay later, I'm still learning new strategies for the original two levels.

It's gotta be rough for people picking up this game late. I went in to play a few randoms to basically play some "easy" rounds (compared to GAF) and everyone was Level 10+ and clearly knew what they were doing. Random is much more competitive, even after only a few days.

Hopefully for the new Level 1s playing, they have something that matches them up with other new folks.

Wow I didn't know there was an end to squid jump. It also doesn't feel satisfying to beat random people. It almost feels like bullying the newcomers.

Stuff like this is going to be so rad when we can have friend lobbies.

Indeed.

so, is ranked mode characterised by anything other than the mode being "splatzones" or will it have a ranking system of sorts?

because if not they could have just called the one mode "turf war" and the other "splatzones"

There's a seperate ranking system. And I guess the new modes they'll add later will also be ranked.

I played with a mate earlier. we had a lvl 13, a lvl 11, a lvl 10, and two lvl 9s. Suddenly three lvl 1s joined. They all got into the same team with me.
I ate more ink this day that I have ever splatted before.

It's already sold a million in Japan?

Nope but it's tracking to sell close to 200k its first week (it's possible those numbers are a bit optimistic but it's going to likely do at least 150k). With it being a success in Japan, it'll clear one million units. It's going to sell fine in the west.

I'm not so sure about 2 million but 1 million is pretty much a lock at this point, unless sales absolutely collapse.

Yeesh. That's rough.

I really hope Nintendo does something for the non-ranked battles too, because they had expressed concern about the barrier to entry with online shooters. If new people pick up the game in a couple months and get kicked around the map repeatedly and consistently, it'll be kinda discouraging.

The sales are probably going to be good. If sales are really good Nintendo usually announce the sales numbers on Monday like they did with Mario Kart and Smash.

I feel like playing this game but there's nothing left for me to do. Completed single player and all the challenges and I'm at level 20. Really hoping they release more info tomorrow about Rank battle or something.

I hope they add at least one more unranked mode in the future. I'm not too interested in being super competitive, though I'll certainly be checking out ranked battles.

....Seriously. Teams are shuffled randomly. Those poor lvl 1 will be put with lvl 12 in their team in the next match. No big deal.

We should be more concerned about the possible difficulty to find a turf war match once people have moved on to ranked mode. I hope that turf war being excluded from Ranked mode will make enough people to miss it to populate the lists

Hmm, I don't like the idea of ranked battles, isn't leveling enough? I'd rather have it separated by gamemode if at all. Keep the community tight and the matchmaking quick. I don't see what ranking would add to the game.

Do we know anything at all about new maps or when we'll get a third map in the rotation?

btw your avatar is amazing
Thanks. I made that model to learn a bit about low-poly stuff. It's 67 triangles, though it could easily be 63 without affecting the fidelity (currently using 4 triangles per sucker, which is stupid because you never really SEE the suckers)

Trust me, I want it to sell like gangbusters, but I'm a bit wary after Xenoblade sales took a nosedive after a strong start

Ranked Battle is an entirely different format. It's like King of the Hill. Rather than trying to cover the entire map, everyone focuses on capturing a certain area to accrue points. It's not just Turf War with rankings. It's an entirely different rule set.

This is selling better than Xenoblade and has broader appeal, even in Japan. I think 1 million is a pretty safe bet. 2 million I'm less confident in.

Yeah, that's true. But even switching teams around, the newer folks will probably get whacked in almost every encounter with a veteran player. But yeah, it probably won't be as a severe problem as other shooters, since they can learn the ropes by taking support roles and painting more defensively at first.

Got home, went on for some nice Splatoon. After the maps rotated I decided to try out the Splat Charger.

Three people from my Friends List showed up, all with gold Aerosprays. Eating dinner now but I don't think I need to say how "well" that went... For perspective I like just got level 6.
