Splinter Cell: Blacklist |OT| Warning: May Contain Trace Amounts Of Stealth

Finished the campaign and have played a few grim missions. I'm enjoying this more than anything I've played this year.

It's so close to my GOTY. The Last of Us barely beats it out. Probably out more hours into SC though. I really do love it. The way Sam moves, kills, and shoots is just pure fun. Good mission variety, good stealth, good action. It is just a really enjoyable game.

Gen X

Trust no one. Eat steaks.
No lockpicking, or interrogating guards to get door codes, but otherwise it can play a lot like Chaos Theory, if you want it to. It's just that going full assault and blasting all the enemies is a viable option in most areas as well (there are some small sections where stealth isn't optional).

Man I forgot all about the lockpicking from the earlier games. Now I wish it was implemented, would've suited the Safehouse level with all those locked doors.

Matchmaking is so stupid. Yeah, Ubisoft. Me and a level 5 want to be matched against a team of 4 that is level 50.

SMH.

It's weird because there's so much opportunity for them to talk about previous missions and put some personality back into the characters. Completely wasted opportunities. Writer stuck to the story beats and forgot to make these characters actual people.

Really? I'll grant Sam doesn't have much of an arc, but Briggs really changes from a fresh CIA transfer who doesn't mesh well with the team to
the lead spy on the final mission who is really the one who saves the day.
His relationships with Sam & Charlie really works and has a great arc.

I'm replaying the game now and it's amazing how much is there. I missed a lot because I was to use on gameplay & because the PC dialogue volume drops to 0 during cutscenes sometimes.

Yeah there's the Sam & Briggs thing but Charlie? That's pretty minimal and he's really fucking obnoxious.

Is this game broke for anyone else? The exe file crashes every single time I try to play. I just played it last night I deleted my config file just because the so called fixes I found online just dont work

I'm getting that too. Gonna try redownloading and reinstalling the thing in case something got corrupted during the slow ass download or the slow ass install.
Or maybe not, since it's apparently a known problem currently under investigation.

They're not pushing updates through Uplay? You have to install patches manually like in the 90's? And that was posted on August 2nd?

Honestly that is the weirdest shit, considering in the reverse I believe it was Anno 1440 or something that had to be pulled off Steam because Ubi wouldn't patch it there. Now we have the opposite and rather than flaunt their end-all-be-all company DRM/Friendslist solution, we time travel back to before 2004.

Actually I solved my issue I delete the config then when it came back I changed one of the settings to 2 from 1. Then I went to the bottom and turned off that verification process that pops up everytime you start the game

1) they can't.

2) Mercs have counters to this.

3) yes, yes it is
I've had it happen. As for the camo stuff I still think it should be a little bit more pronounced but whateves.

Just had a string of people rage quit ending three games because each one was the host. I still keep coming back for more though.

Not Charlie himself, but Briggs & Charlie. Briggs' relationship with Charlie is another way we learn about Briggs & see him change.
Like in the Transit Yards, disarming the bombs. He's nervous at first, impressed at Sam's speed and hasn't ever gotten along with Charlie, especially Charlie giving him instructions. He thinks Charlie is obnoxious just like the player does. But Briggs learns to trust him & complete the objective. Even joke with Charlie at the end.
it's a secondary source of character development, but it shows more of Briggs and how he changes and becomes a true member if the team.

Wait, what's the Merc counter to active camo?

That like emp suit or whatever that the mercs have.

Disrupter suit?

Maybe you were too far away? If you shoot any spy in the face with almost anything, it counts as a headshot and instakill.

Could have been. Or maybe it grazed the shoulder, I don't know.

Fun stuff. Halfway on that weekly SvsM uplink challenge.

Yeah, unfortunately there's not many people playing uplink and those that are keep rage quitting. How hard is it to do in game host migration?

The Russian Embassy stage is soooo good

This stage works great when your dont have a co-op partner, plenty of places to hide, climb and set traps.

Agreed. I played it on Perfectionist and loved it. Best SC game by far. Fans of 1,2 & 3 will love perfectionist difficulty.

For those who have controller issues:
sometimes it feels like a button is stuck (maybe the game/driver missed a notification) and once you hit that button again, it will work again.
The first time, and so far for me the only time, the controller did not work, I eventually hid the Y button in the menu (for shadownet), and everything worked.
Sometime when I hit the A button during the loading screen Sam will autorun the next time and I need some tries to stop him.
I had similar issues with the keyboard. Sometimes the game acts like I am always holding down the alt or shift key, until I hammered that key a few times. Using the Windows Key can also screw up some things for me.

yeah well it's nintendo.
what does that have to do with the multiplayer service quality?

I think only Charlie missions have anything approaching a checkpoint, every five waves. Pretty sure you can continue from where you left off in that one, and only that one.
Briggs' coop missions have checkpoints.

sequel will have dual pistols, dual smgs, dual knifes, dual takedowns, 6 people mark and execute.

stakes are higher, fisher.
Seriously, if it has 2 times the difficulty of being detected, 2 times the AI, and 2 times the shadows count me in.

Is this game broke for anyone else? The exe file crashes every single time I try to play. I just played it last night I deleted my config file just because the so called fixes I found online just dont work
Are you using DX9 or DX11?
The DX11 .exe seems more lilkely to crash for me, maybe a memory leak.
When I was playing around in DX11 graphics settings sometimes Windows gave me an out of memory warning.

Crashes are rare for me though. 2 under DX11, and none under DX9.

1)Spies should never be able to take a full shotgun blast to the face and live. Ridiculous.
[...snip...]
3)Host migration is broken.

1) it is a network game. It may have looked like the Spy was hit on your end, but in engine he did not get hit.

3) another issue, that many people report, that I never had on my end. but I haven't played that much SvM yet, maybe 15 to 20 matches, and never with friends.

Then I went to the bottom and turned off that verification process that pops up everytime you start the game
Which verification process?

So do I have to manually download that patch? I have a Uplay copy.
yes, and make sure it is about 1,7 GBs in size.

So I just got the platinum trophy, game was a lot of fun for the most part.
Some really annoying stuff related to controls and some forced non-stealth sections, but mostly enjoyable.
It did seem a little easy in some parts, and the cash system is a bit over the top (I ended up with around $12 million after decking out my Spy, Merc and Sam in all the best Loud and Stealthy gear, including every gadget and several guns) - but the gameplay can be really satisfying. Playing stealthily while still being able to move quickly is a lot of fun. A different beast to Chaos Theory, for sure.

I liked it a lot more than I thought I would however. Lately I've been finding it hard to play games to completion because I just can't stay engaged. The only games I can really think of finishing and digging into this year are Metal Gear Rising, Tomb Raider, God of War Ascension, Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us. I've played a lot of other stuff but not ended up finishing, so this was a pleasant surprise.

Almost every time host migration occurs (PS3) on Spies versus Mercs, the everyone in the game disconnects. So annoying. Fun as hell though when you can get a complete game in.

Probably not a question to pose as I'm going to bed but I wonder what Metal Gear 5's stealth stuff will be like? They refined the controls for better shooting in 4.

And of that open world stuff, adds something else into the mix.

Blacklist has been a pretty good stealth game and it got me thinking about the genre in general.

Yeah I just started another play through of The Last of Us after playing Blacklist. Another good stealthish title that doesn't force you into stealth but encourages it. I imagine MGS 5 will be kind of like that. An evolution of 4.

I'm excited. Any word on when that gets released?

Seven Day Duty Shift complete. Now I just gotta win a TDM and get the Extraction intel to the base and then I'm done with SvM AFAIK.

Anyone else having an issue getting into online games on PC ? everything was fine at launch and now I can't join or host a game at all. I tried opening some ports ubi suggested. Deleted my host file and still... no MP.

BROKEN. They were below me and despite it being Classic to where we all have the same gear, I have "more time" with the game and thus womped them. How is that fun for new players or people that want an even-level match? Ubisoft needs to fix the matchmaking code a little to take that in account.

Though it was funny running away from the Merc firing on me after I death from aboved his teammate and then he climbed up as I climbed down and he climbed down as I climbed up, cat and moused him to 100% to win the round.

What exactly are you trying to show with the screenshots?

(and 100 to 85 looks like a close game to me)

They only got to 85 within the last like 1-2 mins of the round. Which is my point, I'm going around A/B/C for 10 mins because these dudes are new (level 3-5) versus me (a 17) going straight to A and capping it within 3 mins of the "half-time" second round.

How is these matchmakings of extremely higher/lower levels fun for the lower levels? What do they learn from playing someone that's played longer and can completely stop their tactics and tricks pretty fast?

What I'm getting at is: why isn't the matchmaking... matchmaking? Surely there's level 3-5's they could play SvM with instead of having me join and completely wreck them.

Moving into next-gen I assume the next title might keep the LEAD engine but I'd like to see something else. I think MGS5 has some interesting concepts. Don't entirely know how it would translate over to Splinter Cell but I would love to see some more truly sandbox levels. Even up to now and including Chaos Theory, Splinter Cell has normally been a fairly linear stealth game. Like go here, go there, do this, do that. Obviously over time level design has opened up but it still funnels us along for the most part.

The Grim missions are fantastic for that reason but I'd also love to see more variety, or even more breadth and depth to levels like that. But in that way the game has to becoming even more systemic. Maybe more elaborate things like electrical systems you can manipulate or something else. Not scripted, mind you like where you have to disable a thing so you can proceed to the next part of a mission. Something more like "if I disable the lights, I'll have more shadows to move around in but this might alert the guards". I'm also not expecting like full-on Skyrim open world but I would like to see levels where you can choose where you get inserted and then from there choose how to infiltrate and complete an objective and extract in some non-linear fashion. That isn't to say that should be the whole game but other than refining the mechanics from Blacklist (which are really well defined save for few) I can't see where else the genre can go, especially on a AAA budget. The balance they struck here between stealth being heavily encouraged even when straight up "shootbang" is supported was pulled off really well, so honestly they should take that and run with it.

Honestly, that question is more "let's wait and see what Phantom Pain is even doing in the sandbox first before even thinking of taking elements from it/Splinter Cell to the other."

For all we know the Sandbox may not regenerate lights or other effects fast enough to where you can "speed run" stealth through levels. Or the AI may suck. Or Big Boss may not be as mobile as Briggs/Sam, or...

Been thinking along those same lines.

I'd like to have remote mines and emps with a twist: you manually set a timer for them to go off. Now understand, I hate timers and timed objectives, but this is usually because they're arbitrary and you can fail even if you get everything done half a second after the timer goes off. But if you set the timer yourself? That gives you a clock to work against to get the fuck out of dodge, out of the blast radius, or to just get into position to take advantage of a momentary outage or distraction or to synch up with your co-op partner.

Give me generators to *optionally* disable or temporarily emp. Give me command elements I can take down to tap into comms, or to grab keycards (or use the bodies to bypass security like in the campaign). Give me optional objectives to free POWs and escort them out using the mechanic used twice in the campaign. Let me set up my own rapple points, or wall breaches.

The groundwork here is solid, and its begging to be elaborated on and explored. There's a lot here that can be done because for all intents and purposes you are a one man Ghost Recon/Rainbow Six squad. Its all about having options and being able to form your own plans and execute them imho.

Well the major problem is that
level does not equal skill

I do not know, if the game has a "real" skill rating in the background, but just matchmaking by SvM's level is not enough.
Maybe the game is trying to us a "hidden rating", or it isn't and everything is random.
Maybe Ubisoft did a shitty matchmaking, but I am not convinced, yet.

At face value that match did not look unfair.
And in SvM classic the unlocks/gadgets are not an issue either.

I assume that you did not let the other team get to 85%, but that they earned it fair and square.

You can also learn a lot from playing with and against better players.

If I were a lower level player in that game, I would not have minded, unless I would see during the game that you were actually skilled high above me.
It could also be frustrating if I have no chance to see, how exactly you are besting me, but SvM, while complex looks easy to learn for me.

I am indeed at level 5 right now, and have been focusing on SP & COOP right now, but maybe you can teach me a few tricks in the future :)

If anyone feels like giving the Co-op a go, send me an invite on Uplay(PC). Krappadizzle. Prefer to play ghost-style on Realistic+ difficulty.

Hopefully the 1.01 Patch (PC/uPlay) helps.
Everytime I switch from my monitor to TV, the game refuses to start. Everytime, I need to change the settings (from the .ini) from 'Full Screen' to 'Borderless' and vice versa, depending what setting was active before. :/

Btw is it just me or is it really easy to get zeh monies in this game? I mean I don't mind since you can buy all the cool gadgets right away and don't have to wait until the last mission to be able to use them.

It is. I replayed Safe House a couple of times to get some money. Quick and easy.

Also finished some challenges and got even more money.

Any performance tips, the game kinda runs like ass even though fraps is telling me is doing 60fps, the animation feels off, choppy, dunno how to explain it, what parallax does? should I turn it off?

I'd like to express my putrid hate for uPlay. It's a sack of shit.

It's responsible for memory leaks, poor friend management, and it won't even give me the ability to buy the stupid DLC content. This is all coming from PC, but it's insane. I've never really had a problem in the past, but in the last 3 hours I've crashed once, had a friend crash twice and had a really strange occurrence where I've ctd yet the game was still running and I couldn't do much to get rid of it. Really really weird. It's a great game, hampered severely by uPlay. uPlay fucking blows. I don't even have a weak PC, I've a i7-920@4ghz/GTX 680/12Gbs Ram. Shenanigans.

What are the conditions under which Sam holds his gun and karambit CQC style like Solid Snake?

Just switching to lethal takedowns doesn't do it.

I noticed it before and thought it looked cool as hell.
