I agree. Direction and actual story content are very different things. Pure direction can be broken down to simply "how you use a camera". There is no need to have a story, a plot, a script, or even any sound.

I liked the framing and scene compostion in Madoka and Bakemonogatari better when I saw it in Tenamonya Voyagers and Soul Taker.

I suppose it's a matter of opinion, but I definitely disagree. Even ignoring the witch realms, the show is just so visually entertaining to watch. I got the same impact from Bakemonogatari, and is the main reason I love both shows. I haven't seen a similar style anywhere, so by-the-numbers is the last way I would describe it.

I dunno I feel like Shinbo series/OVA direction is like the sameface of character design or something. It isn't by-the-numbers in the fact that it is visually bland or average, it's that I feel I've seen it done in a specifically similar way enough times to the point where it becomes more predictable and boring than it might otherwise be.

Beelzebub 11 Seemed like a filler, but since I don't read the manga I have no idea. It was funny to see someone else lead the episode, also failure is always funny.

Beelzebub 12 The dad was the best part, hands done.

So Toriko is pretty awesome and shit. He ate a giant crocodile this week, pretty intense food.

Is this going to be an ongoing show like Bleach and One Piece or what?

Mouryou no Hako 8

Okay this show is absolutely incredible when they aren't locked in insane episode long conversations.
I find it incredible at all times!

But those conversations are lethal. They're Oshii level heavy, except that they all tie into the main plot.

Even for a fake list it's not really that exciting, nothing but adaptations and sequels man, i want more original projects.
Well, you can't GET HYPE for original projects!

Oshii's got nothing on Kyougokudou. Although it was really just that one scene were discussing what Mouryou are that was really insane. All those Japanese legend discussions and Kanji comparisons were hard as hell to follow.

The fish- and bird-related symbolism honestly can't be anything other than callbacks to Angel's Egg.
Well, that was almost too obvious. I mean, the man, the girl, the symbol. The symbol being destroyed at the end.

Although the end reveal also leaves us with the other typical question found in stories where the main character appeared to have been wrapped up in a false reality: is he still in one a the end? Although for Oshii the question tends to be answered "I don't care".

That's the infamous 'condensed lecture in Japanese mythology" episode. It must have been a bugger to translate.

I watched the whole show twice, back to back, and only then did that episode start to make sense. It's brutal.

What happened to Star Driver and Panty and Stocking then?
I was hyped for those! (based on director / staff).

Sadly only one delivered though.:(

I don't get why you hate fun man, FUN.
I love fun. 12-year-old humor, not so much.

Fall was a weird season. All that hype for the new Bones mecha anime, the crazy new Gainax show, the female otaku Brains Base show, and that dumb incest show, and the best show of the season ended up being the Shaft show with maids.

Well, at the very least Shinbo uses the full range of possible camera movements, styles and compositions. Although when and where that's achieved varies, but theoretically they'll be used.

Fall was a predictable season. All that hype for the new Bones mecha anime (lol Bones) the crazy new Gainax show (obviously gonna be awesome) the female otaku Brains Base show (decent enough) and that dumb incest show (herp derp) and the best show of the season predictably ended up being the crazy new Gainax show.

Yeah I agree with all of those things.

He knows call attention to scenes that don't develop anything pretty well.

Yeah, Star Driver was awesome

Star Driver was certainly more fun than Panty and Stocking, but it was still a disappointment.

Once I got over that it wasn't the show it could have been, I found it to be fun, if very inconsistent.

Mai-Hime 14

How does a highschool girl with no combat experience get out of being escorted by trained professionals? By head butting them of course.

Still kind of feel like the guys that destroyed the bridge aren't quite the bad guys here. White haired kid is still hella suspicious and we still have no idea what anyone's motive is. Either way, glad stuff is finally happening.

Shinbo's directing is pretty gimmicky, but at least he's creative. I just don't like 90% of what he works on because the material doesn't interest me. But Ando on the other hand, is one fucking awesome traditional director. He doesn't rely on gimmicks and unusual camera styles to compose his scenes, but his direction has an excellent film-like quality to it in terms of understanding how to compose a setting and the layout.

I love bringing up the fight on the bridge in Sword of the Stranger when discussing pure directing. The way the scene is planned and "shot" is really impressive because it's such a simple scene, and the methods used are so basic and unpretentious, but it achieves to much in terms of building multiple perspectives in an environment, and using them as points of references to give the "event" in the scene a true sense of three dimensional space and depth, while also allowing the audience to soak in the flavor of the setting and the time period.

So good.

You mean partially delivered. That show was a mixed bag of decent, horrible, and awesome.

if its P and S i agree.

it and Star Driver were strangely on equal ground since they both had cool first and end eps with slim pickings in between.

Trapeze 6

The calendar dates make me suspect that all these stories were supposed to be happening at the same time, but this confirms it. I like this series even more now.

The majority of P&S was good stuff, and even the worst of P&S was still better than 95% of what came out during the season!

Not really it was mostly swung back and forth between horrible and decent range most of the time with slight bumps to awesome in Episode 6 and a few select skits. The final episode was pretty meh aside from the ending.

Looking at the episode list, the only episodes i found meh were 3, 8, 14. The rest were pretty good, with some episodes being amazing!

Opinions are opinions, to be honest i find it perfectly understandable that someone could not like P&S but love nichijou!

Well is his directing is always extremely over the top, but at least the techniques he uses aren't devoid of meaning. Strong classical directing is great as well, as you mention with Ando, but as anime TV episodes tend to be lacking in both camps I'm glad that a diverse range of directors exist.

It does. As does Panty and Stocking. But they're two completely different styles of humor. It just means that your friend has different tastes than you. dealwithit.gif

And for the record, I enjoy both.
