Now that is quite the exaggeration. Chihayafuru isn't nearly that bad!

Chihayafuru is now on my top ten favorites list so it obviously isnt bad.
Loved it so much.

But you already promised me you'd watch Sailor Moon. :(


Also, I think I had the wrong expectations when I watched Cowboy Bebop, which always manages to sour an experience, even when neither the viewer nor the thing being viewed is at fault.

I really like the full Tank, but I didn't like the cut they used for the OP. :(

Yeah I definitely think you should watch more of it. It is mainly episodic in nature and only has a shallow story beneath all the fun stuff. But Its a good story. Also, you havent seen some of the truly legendary episodes like Jupiter Jazz.

We can all dream.

But it's cheaper for SEGA just to put a mocap suit on a 40 yr old dude.

If that happened, anime would have fulfilled its role on Earth.

It's not impossible, I've done it before. Went to a flea market last year where someone had a ton of old 90s OVAs that were former rentals for $2 each. Bought Casshan: Robot Hunter. Regretted not getting the rest, some might have been rare.

They actually released anime on VHS? How many episodes could be on one? four?

3-4 depending on the show. Just look at how awesome this DBZ stuff was I bought when I was way younger (I loved the continuing boxart they did on the sides):

You need to watch Dirty Pair to learn what real 80s sci-fi is like.
Yeah, Bebop is 80s-like in the Dirty Pair, Space Adventure Cobra sense. 80s space adventures, basically.

I find myself listening to oath sign multiple times a day. I'm so ready for F/Z S2.

Bebop is obviously influenced by shows made in the '80s, but I can't think of the show itself as having a predominant '80s theme. It's just as much influenced by '90s aesthetics, as well as even older ones.

Are the orange box DBZ releases any good? I believe that's what's coming out over here sometime soon.

The automatic ""remastering"" process ate a lot of the outlines on the Orange Bricks. And the contrast is boosted to make it look like candy colored barf. Basically, no.

Fantastic. After all them years of waiting for DBZ on DVD in the UK and that's what we get? Think I'll pass, I'm not even that fond of DBZ.
 
The Space Brothers situation has been definitively clarified: the show will not end on June 27; rather the results of the promotional campaign will be announced at the end of that week's episode. We can look forward to pugs in spacesuits for a while to come.

Excellent. I look forward to hopefully getting a full year out of the show.

But GAINAX has always been inconsistent. It's not just last decade.

They put out a much higher amount of quality works in the 90s. They've pretty much completely eroded post-FLCL, and haven't had a memorable TV series in thirteen years.

My mistake, 90's. Although I remember the actual aesthetic feeling older....

Bebop doesn't feel particularly 80s to me. It may take some inspiration from past stuff, but the aesthetics are pretty far removed from 80s anime.

YES! I didn't think it could get any more badass and hot-blooded than the previous episode, but man was I proven wrong. That was some JRPG final boss shit combined with Gurren Lagann shit going on. I figured it was over halfway through the episode, but NOPE, you get punched in the face with the gloves of pure unadulterated awesome for pretty much the rest of the episode! Motherfucking wow! I also TOTALLY called that the
soft intro was a fake out
. In your face, A Black Falcon!

Anyway, this was a great if not inconsistent show. While there were plenty examples of good animation, even I was able to notice the drop around episode 4 when a bunch of staff people left or something. Definitely a "what could have been" scenario that really makes this kind of painful considering how awesome the finale was and some earlier scenes were. I mean a lot of the show follows the rule of cool, particularly in the weapons department (and they fuckin swiped my ideas for some of them :(), so it's a bit disappointing to know things could have been much better.

The characters were pretty cool. Not amazing or anything, but in the context of the show, there's not much I can complain about. I do wish they fleshed out Chris a bit more. Everyone else other than Fine was insignificant for the most part, but that's fine with me because pretty much everyone else sucked other than red-hair dude.

So yeah, great action, ridiculously awesome weapon designs, above average characters; good stuff all around. This will probably go down as my favorite action magical girl series and it makes me somewhat hopeful for the genre as it seems to have done well. This coupled with Madoka is definitely helping my perception of it.
