Needs more penguins and floating whales. I wonder how long it takes before it tries to take its premise seriously again.

Wonder if I can just make the whole eps into a gif.

So do you guys think Medaka Box is going to be better or is it ultimately just a bad show through and through? Will the aforementioned genre shift change it for the better?
Shounen fans always use the excuse "but it picks up" and It's usually wrong!

You don't generally find magical girls tied down to some man because they're busy doing other things!
Really? What about Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask, etc?

Also, there's always the potential for the creators of those works to exploit their characters by injecting their works with lesbian subtext, usually in an attempt to pander to the male audience.
True on that point though.

Well, I come from it as a former fan of science fiction looking for something to counteract the trend of nihilism found in today's literature, television, film and video games. To me, its positivity and utopian outlook on life is precisely why I've seen the series four or five times now.
I also enjoyed the world building, even if it was just Venetian tourist porn. But that's because I watch stuff like No Reservations and The Amazing Race.
But isn't something like YKK pretty darn nihilistic, under the surface? How does that differ so much from the stuff you're criticizing (I assume you mean things like the new Battlestar Galactica, which was good, but I stopped watching a while in because of how dark and depressing it had gotten) in any way other than the surface tone? Unless you only mean that, and the themes underneath aren't as important?

Well FSN was originally going to be this:

I know why Nasu swapped the genders but I still feel like this might have been a missed opportunity.
Yeah, I can't think of much that could possibly have been worse about that version, so I agree, it probably was a missed opportunity.

That list is entirely in the wrong order, top to bottom.

Moe Nobunaga is best Nobunaga.
Certainly a whole lot less cruel than the real Nobunaga, for sure, too!

The singer did die, yeah.
Yeah, and then that ending made the whole thing pointless by showing that no one else died from doing that same thing. So stupid, she shouldn't have died either if none of the others did.

So do you guys think Medaka Box is going to be better or is it ultimately just a bad show through and through? Will the aforementioned genre shift change it for the better?
Depends on if you like shonen action with writing like that or not.

It's pretty interesting that Il Teatrino is actually more similar to the source material than the first season was. Didn't know the mangaka was actually involved in the production of the second season. Hmm, do you recommend reading the manga?
Back when the first season aired, I definitely remember hearing some people say how the anime was better than the manga, as I said... if the second season is more like the manga, that'd definitely be some additional proof for that!

Shounen fans always use the excuse "but it picks up" and It's usually wrong!
:lol That's so true...

Ouza no Gemu S2 ep 1

Wow they really hit the ground running in the new season. Things felt like they were moving a mile a minute. It was great to see the characters again after so long. Chirion-sama is my husbando~! <3
God I hope someone kills Jioffuri soon. Also this show has more incest than Oreimo, Koi Kaze, and Yosuga no Sora put together.

Is Fate stuff even worth getting into? I recall watching that recent movie and had no clue what's going on besides the basics.

Does the Eroge hold up?

Hey, remember this? Back from when it had a preview airing on Nicovideo and came across as supremely lackluster?

Yeah, nothing's changed from being aired in hi-def. Don't waste your time. I'll probably give it one more episode for the benefit of the doubt but I'm not feeling too confident.

7.5/10, with THAT MC? That's kind, too kind... even if you don't have too much criteria, how awful Shirou is as a character should drop it a bit below that, I think.

The problem is that F/SN anime only adapted (mostly) the first of 3 routes, of which the first is the one where Shirou is downright retarded. He's much better in the UBW movie, and apparently the last route is very different from what was seen in the anime and movie. But yeah, he was breathtakingly stupid for a good 75% of the anime's run, only redeeming himself near the end.

The franchise is somewhat interesting, but it messes up almost as much as it does right, sadly, and this is probably the weakest of the Fate series.

Well, F/SN deals with mostly high-school kids most of which aren't even proper mages. Contrast that with Fate/Zero and it's not much of a contest. That being said, there are 3 Shirous and we only saw the dumbest one if we only watched the anime. :(

Does the Eroge hold up?

I'll let you know in about 30-40 hours. >_>

The good news is that you are actually
Rin
for the entire Prologue chapter. I learned a lot about how to think like a tsundere in the Prologue. The bad news is then you are Dumbest Shirou for the first route (Fate) and you need to finish that route to unlock Unlimited Blade Works. Sigh.

The episode started sort of OK but by the end disappointed me. I was expecting Takeru to bring out something a bit more interesting than
a fiancee popping out of nowhere to save his ass.
I was also thinking that the show didn't look all that bad, but then there was this scene
33598ad01fac16d043f24158f692507a094e47cf.jpg

and I started to think that maybe I should just go read the manga or something.

Does Seruzei Joō-sama still constantly look like she's constipated?

See, this is how you do it.

I'm pretty surprised of how active this thread is; didn't know Gaf liked anime this much.

It's just the same 30 or so posters arguing about nothing.

So do you guys think Medaka Box is going to be better or is it ultimately just a bad show through and through? Will the aforementioned genre shift change it for the better?

Maybe. Will have to see how some of the fights look in motion.

Shounen fans always use the excuse "but it picks up" and It's usually wrong!

You say this as a One Piece fan?

Huh. Why?

The manga has 1 really good arc.

Why not? It has martial arts and boobs. Until I can get my Queen's Blade fix I thought this could do, but I could have been wrong based on the first episode.

The fan service is decent in it, which is why I watched it. And outside of the main boobs cast, even more come in later and there's a bunch of em.

I always need one good fanservice show every season.

This season has the megaton of fanservice:
The Dyson Air Multiplier in Korean Zombie Desk Car.

Did you not notice any of my reviews of the series, warning people to stay far, far away?

Seriously, if you want an entertainingly dumb harem action series, watch Koihime Musou (first and third seasons, especially; S2 is weaker), or Hyakka Ryokan Samurai Girls, or Infinite Stratos again, or Bad Aria, or maybe even Majikoi... but stay away from Maken-Ki, it's the worst of them I've watched in years. I hate the MC, he's the stupidest harem lead I've seen since Shirou... and the girls aren't a whole lot better either.

Oh, and I can't quite put it in the same category because it's not an action show, more comedy, but I thought R-15 was a good show too. Better than most of the shows in that list above, in fact; only Infinite Stratos and Koihime Musou would probably beat it.

(And yes, I've finished all of the shows I listed above. In Maken-Ki's case, it involved more suffering than any of those others by a good-sized margin, to actually force myself through that travesty...)

I always need one good fanservice show every season.

The characters are among the worst in the genre, the plot is COMPLETELY stupid, the setting is as generic as it can be... watching it for the fanservice alone is probably about the only reason to even consider it, but even then, why not watch something that also is fanservicey, but isn't as terrible otherwise? There are plenty of options too, as I list above.

;_;

That was the sound of my heart breaking.

Hyperbole aside, I still enjoyed Il Teatrino even though Madhouse's take on the franchise seemed to fit Gunslinger Girl like a glove. I guess I'll read it just because of how much I love GSG but I won't be expecting anything amazing. *puts on backlog*

Well I wouldn't say Fate route Shirou is downright retarded <_< Idealistic and bigoted, mixed in with the usual harem lead vapidness sounds better.

I'd say Fate/Zero's strength lies in Urobuchi's writing augmenting Nasu's usual style. I think someone mentioned this before that Nasu's strength lies in the world building and general atmosphere of the setting. His character's aren't that strong though it helps that the length of the VN allows more instances of character development throughout the story. I feel Urobuchi uses his skill in plot and character development to flesh out Fate/Zero far beyond what Nasu can do alone and that makes F/Z a superior experience overall.

tldr; Fate/Zero is fucking awesome guys, don't be discouraged by the less than stellar F/SN anime.

It's completely different. Fate/Zero is infinitely superior to Stay Night, and the characters are much more fleshed out.

yeah, I watched all 13 of Fate/Zero.. then I tried to watch an episode of Fate/Stay Night.. and I barely finished it without turning it off.

I don't think I can subject myself to more of F/SN after watching Fate/Zero.

My brain keeps trying to make sense of this picture, but it only causes me pain and that I think I see something that looks like boobs in there somewhere.

Well, it's Hans Bellmer, so . . . /whistles

I wanted to make a joke about that dyson fan and the ubiquitous nature of holes, but it fizzled. :(

Tangentially related to anime because Oshii used some of his work as an inspiration. See this; probably NSFW.

Exception to the rule; although I personally enjoyed OP from the start, I just didn't love it till the Arlong arc.

So who's to say Medaka isn't an exception either? You can't know without taking the plunge. Same with OP. There are people that hate it even after they get to Arlong.

Regulus Tera

Romanes Eunt Domus
Polar Bear Café 01

Very relaxing and it wasn't annoying despite all the puns. I'm very much enjoying it. It's very light-hearted and motivional. The feel-good animu of the season?

Surprisingly more about the Panda than the Polar Bear. The downside: Japanese dubstep. :(

YKK isn't nihilistic because it doesn't assume that humanity will just give up when faced with extinction. It's also not "Pleasantville" or that island from "The Prisoner" or some other false utopia that we've seen on Star Trek countless times. That would be nihilistic, if beneath the surface there was some puppet master controlling humanity or some such. But it's not. Ultimately, it's about growing old and being comfortable with the limitations of your life as a human being.

The Koreans only made it because they are so afraid of fan death or whatever. It's not supposed to work better or anything, but it also won't kill you at night while you sleep.

I thought fan death was something that happened when you left the air conditioning on overnight.

Or at least that's what my parents told me when I was little. :(

Therefore, the irony of the F/SN anime is that in 2006 it would have failed utterly to convert anyone to becoming a fan of the franchise or Type-Moon properties in general.

I... wouldn't quite say that, considering I was one of those converts when I saw it...

I'm assuming the ending of the show matches the Fate route it mostly adapts, and so it's not really a happy ending, but it was a good ending. As a proud member of the All-Around Mustache Club, I don't really have a ton of criteria for judging how good an anime really is besides was the animation pretty and did it have a good ending. The animation wasn't pretty, and Shirou's character stood out as being exceptionally ugly though the other characters fared better. But I did cry several times at the end, and that always counts for something when I rate animes.

The ending was
pretty much the same as the VN, though the VN did go into a bit more detail with Shirou than the anime could with the time it had left. If you enjoyed the ending and want to see a semi-continuation/possible continuation of that, though short, look up Last Episode on youtube.

That's good, since I thought the characters and premise were fairly interesting, but the show/pace/etc killed it for me.

The F/SN anime adaptation is pretty bad. The VN's pretty damn good if you're game for playing reading for at least 30 hours of text.

and quoting myself in case you missed it:

and newcomers can get into F/Z easily since it's a prequel to F/SN with minimal knowledge of the Fate universe needed.

The Koreans only made it because they are so afraid of fan death or whatever. It's not supposed to work better or anything, but it also won't kill you at night while you sleep.

It looks cool though. I'd buy it at a high price. :p
