Now people are dissecting and hating on Maken-Ki? What did anime ever do to you? Strangled your dog? Friendzoned you? Married your little sister? Gave you swimming lessons? Gave you standards?
I assure you I didn't want to come as a hater of that series. My intention was to state that side of GAiNAX people seem to forget, the kind of adaptations veterans of the studio have worked on...
And I like the pace at which things are moving. A lot has happened already, and a lot is poised to occur. The entire cast has been introduced (from what I can tell), and we know what they're going to be up to. I'm not confused about anything, but the episode proceeds through introductions and interactions efficiently. Great stuff.
All the characters are varied levels of archetype so far (Kanna is one of my favorite archetypes,
which means inevitable disappointment
), but so far most of them are given room to act. Unlike something like Seto no Hanayome (the most recent anime in this genre that I've watched), I feel like the characters are driving the plot so far, instead of just doing cliche-character responses to contrived situations. Of course, that's a huge assumption to make after one episode.
I found Ichika's desperate desire to fit in endearing and amusing. It reminded me of my experience studying abroad in Japan. She's acting more like a fresh-off-the-boat exchange student than an out-and-out alien, but I'm willing to roll with it since they haven't established a particular level of cultural understanding.
So, as there's quite a split forming on this issue I thought I'd compile these posts up. Let it be known that there is no 'hivemind' here, we have a pretty diverse set of tastes in this thread.
I'm with you, the first volume of the manga was a lot of fun, Koko is mai waifu.

More crunchy slots? is this the most new shows they've licensed in one season? I for one am quite happy to see so many shows increasing the areas in which they can be legally watched.
By the way guys, does GAF have a thread for anime conventions? I just found out there's going to be one in my area the day after my birthday, so I wanted to tell everyone about it.
This is going to be amazing. I just know it. It has everything. A respectable and commercially successful idol factory brand, an popular writer of many super-hits in recent years, and the director and creator of the biggest idol and scifi anime shows ever. What could possibly go wrong?

They did something very similar when Eden of the East aired, only to retract it just before the show actually started. I suspect this is legit this time, but they have form for screwing up when noitaminA is involved.
Bit disappointed it doesn't appear to be an actual simulcast, though. 2pm BST on Friday is, like, a whole twenty hours after it actually airs. However will we cope?
(although the press release says Thursdays, so... I'm confused. They should fix the show page!)
No, you dumbass, it's not. The press release says April 12 at 9:30 am PDT. Looks like the show's CR page is wrong at the moment. Or it's displaying something wrong on my end.
What? No, it's like an hour after broadcast. The show debuts at 12:45 AM JST on April 13, right? And the stream starts April 12 at 9:30 am PDT, which is 1:30 AM JST on April 13. Unless I misread something...
