But there is violence in the graphic novel! Assassination of weapons (what?) and such...

Poor HK33E...

Whaaa?!

Seems I have judged it too soon! I'll be skimming future Upotte!! reviews then to see what's up. That'd actually get me to take a peek
depending on how well the action is of course

But it is off-screen murder (better said... off-panel?) from what I've seen. Don't know if there will be battles or something like that...

That's quite weird, imo. Well if it's like Soul Eater then I might consider, although it does not look like it has an evil adversary at all.

Off-topic: for some reason when I search my own posts, it only lists the post I made until May 28. I can't see my recent posts, so I forget where I posted..

I think search is still borked :/

The wargame and ak47 arc are surprisingly good.

Wait, it's actually good?

Sankarea 1

It seems like this show is getting a lot of praise because people are surprised that DEEN is capable of competence. I think it's important to keep things in perspective. It's not incredibly good, but it's pretty well done. In a drier season (last season) it'd seem a lot brighter.

It's the direction that gives the show its pulse. I like the heavy shadows. I like the silent cuts between parts of an environment that quietly create a sense of solitude, like in the first sequence pre-credits. The mood is strongest at night and in closed, dark environments. The other parts (school, his room) feel pretty incongruous by comparison.

There's a genre mold that the story and characters want this to become (goofy romance with off-beat twist), but the direction and framing has been resisting the urge to adapt it straight, and imbued parts of this episode with a darker, more oppressive mood.

I don't think that DEEN is going to be able to maintain this level of quality, and I doubt I'll follow the show through to its completion. But this is a nice start.

All this writing talk got my attention for some reason.

Ano Natsu 1

I had a good time with this episode.

I really dig the sundrenched background art of the show. It definitely gives it a summertime feeling.

And I like the pace at which things are moving. A lot has happened already, and a lot is poised to occur. The entire cast has been introduced (from what I can tell), and we know what they're going to be up to. I'm not confused about anything, but the episode proceeds through introductions and interactions efficiently. Great stuff.

All the characters are varied levels of archetype so far (Kanna is one of my favorite archetypes,
which means inevitable disappointment
), but so far most of them are given room to act. Unlike something like Seto no Hanayome (the most recent anime in this genre that I've watched), I feel like the characters are driving the plot so far, instead of just doing cliche-character responses to contrived situations. Of course, that's a huge assumption to make after one episode.

I found Ichika's desperate desire to fit in endearing and amusing. It reminded me of my experience studying abroad in Japan. She's acting more like a fresh-off-the-boat exchange student than an out-and-out alien, but I'm willing to roll with it since they haven't established a particular level of cultural understanding.

You're going to enjoy this show me thinks! :D

Agreed that it's not incredibly good but it's heads and shoulders above their other offerings. It was really jarring for me just to go from Kore wa Zombie to Sankarea.

Just going to quote my impressions before as I'll probably end up repeating myself:

Sankarea 1
Wow. It's like I watched a show from a different studio. Holy crap, what's with the discrepancy?

Next you'll tell me XEBEC or FEEL isn't working on some kind of moe fanservice show. <_< Jokes aside, I really am pleasantly surprised by this return to form for DEEN.

Others have already expounded on this but I definitely feel some SHAFT-esque techniques were incorporated into this. However, it doesn't come off as obnoxious and pretentious; DEEN uses them to augment the viewing experience, not to obfuscate or sometimes distort the scene.

Hopefully, DEEN will keep up this level of animation consistently and the plot doesn't get too crazy.
I'm already kind of eh on the main character being so emotionally attached to this stray cat we've seen just all of 3 minutes. I can empathize but still slightly unbelievable to me.

Yeah, I actually kind of want to check out the .hack//sign anime now if you recommend it. I fucking hate the manga though. I bought it when I had no idea what good manga was, and on re-reading it was still shit.

I enjoyed .hack//sign but that might have more to do with the great soundtrack than the show itself. Its incredibly slow paced and is really just a character drama set in an MMO world and has lolBeetrain production values out the wazoo. The ending is also a huge letdown
"lol play the games if you want to see the rest"
ending.

Edit: Crunchy gets Apollon?

It's a pity so much of the CG is incredibly obvious, because the series premise is quite interesting, and the show itself treads a great line between politicking, action, and humour. I really like the characters, too.

Just... the CG is just so jarring....

One problem I had with Sankarea is the liberal use of white backgrounds. They're all over the place and it's noticeable as a budget cutting tactic. There is no way in hell though for Deen to maintain even that level of quality unless someone personally dumped a shitload of money and hired new animators. Shiki could look good at times but not even close to this.

Also jesus god, what is with anime production companies and rampant fanservice even where completely inappropriate for the tone of the story so far? Jesus. Random 'scientist lady-queen fell asleep wearing sexy lingere, now look at her cleavage while she washes her hands'. Great job. I was really into your politico-military drama until then.

Sankarea 01 I thought as a whole it was fairly average. The first half especially was almost all throwaway, the second half picked up slightly but it still feels like there's an idea which could be interesting (falling in love with a dead girl!) but it's executed in an almost entirely derivative way. Which to me would say the creative force behind it isn't upto much. The bit where she
screamed about her father taking nude pictures of her was so very awkward, why deliver some exposition like this? It's just completely unnatural, can't they just infer something was going on and let the audience line the dots?

Of course I've not seen much of their other stuff so I can't really sit in the 'did they really do this?' camp, but I did watch Hiiro No Kakera and I'd say they're both equally as watchable but forgettable as each other, HnK being the less original of the two.

I'll watch a few more episodes, see if the plot goes anywhere but it's on my 'may drop' list.

Checking now later chapters, I see the Team Battle sections are quite action oriented.

Good to hear.

But they anime may not even reach that far, right? So I'm not exactly putting my hopes up.
Though more open to it than before now that you brought up that guns are
actually used for what they're usually used for in the source.

Yuru Yuri 1

This is what Sengoku Collection's pilot should have been.

I mean, of course with more weapons and battles and stuff, but still!

Overall, okay first episode, cute.

I understand that fans of the manga insist that this improves later on, but while I have no reason to doubt them (as a whole, individually I might have problems with particular members) I don't much care for this show. I'm really turned off by the production as a whole, including the awful character designs.

It doesn't turn good, it just turns meta. It's amusing to watch for a while, but after the novelty fades you realize the actual quality of the writing hasn't changed.

That's my take on it anyway.

Space Bros. - X001

Finally got around to watching this yesterday. The best way I can describe the episode is it flows. It felt as if the entire episode were a song. You were carried from start to finish by the directors melody of art, animation, and music. When your anime viewing consists majorly of the shounen type a show such as Space Bros. really stands out. I really hope the rest of the series can stand up to the "completeness" of this introduction.

Carrying on, this episode had a great sense of wonder to it. Perhaps this was Mutta's nostalgia of his childhood being conveyed to the audience. What ever it was, I liked it.

Don't think I've read a generally negative review in Gaf of Space Bros nor Lupin as of yet.

Signs of good things to come

The faces of all the males look like grade school notebook sketches in motion.

Despite sharing magical girlfriend elements, this and Seto no Hanayome aren't in the same genre. Seto no Hanayome is a wacky harem comedy, while Ano Natsu is a romantic dramedy.

Sankarea 1

It's not a stray cat; it's the family pet which he's lived with for a while. We weren't shown the bond between them while it was alive, since it wasn't necessary to set up the premise, but I do find his feelings believable.

One problem I had with Sankarea is the liberal use of white backgrounds. They're all over the place and it's noticeable as a budget cutting tactic.

Unless you're talking about the OP, I'm not sure what you're talking about. There were a couple moments where it used solid backgrounds for gags, but the majority of the time they ranged from acceptable:

to quite good:

It doesn't have the consistent detailed beauty of something like Buta, but it's nothing to be ashamed of for a TV anime.

There is no way in hell though for Deen to maintain even that level of quality unless someone personally dumped a shitload of money and hired new animators. Shiki could look good at times but not even close to this.

Not sure why you're bringing Shiki up. Are you confusing Deen with Duame?

DEEN must have been trolling with us this whole time with derpy animation. Or they've stockpiled diverted funds from other anime into this. I can't think of anything else.

The reason for why Sankarea 1 turned out as well as it did is pretty obvious: the overall director actually has skill, unlike the other directors who work for Deen these days. He's probably the only person with skill working on the show - he storyboarded and directed this episode as well as the OP and ED. Considering that the next episode preview didn't show any shots as eye-catching, I'm expecting the rest of the show to operate on a lower level, though perhaps it can at least manage to remain competent.

Sengoku Collection 01 - Not sure why I watched this, boredom I guess. Anyway, it wasn't as bad as I expected (Mehdaka box was worse)
Pretty average, loses a point for gratuitous boob shots - I loathe this shit, it's only okay when it's done like Lupin has it where it's adult sexuality, not massive disgusting tits on 'women' that look about 15.
Will it have action/battles and such? That's about the only thing I could think of that would keep me watching.

There is the talk with the zombie around the 3 minute mark where the background is white, the scene where Babu is hit where there is a lot of white, and during the day there is liberal use of sunlight to the point of it being blinding like at 8:57. It's noticeable. I'm not saying the show is by any lengths animated badly, just the amount of whites was a bit distracting for me and I preferred the night shots.

Well turns out I was wrong about Shiki. I could have sworn people in the past said Deen was responsible for Shiki.

I'd watch a Bakuman-inspired anime starring Mio as the artist and Yuuko as the writer.

I'll take 10!

Yuru Yuri 2

Yes, I'm bored and am bopping off Defuser at this point.

Anyhow, it's always neat to see where people's avatars come from at random. Just found BGM's (BVM?) (BYN?) avatar in the YuruYuri ED. And I found Baselius777*'s in the Fate.Zero edumacationals last night.

Anyways, "Glasses Girl"'s fantasies are chuckling
yuri
lulz. We shall be friends.

ARE YOU READY, MOTHERFUCKERS?! In 24 hours, Fate/Zero S2 will resume streaming on Nicovideo. The gods of Aniplex smiles upon us. Today in Japan they screened the first two episodes of S2 (ep14 and ep15) at a special event, and the impressions are overwhelmingly positive. The quality of the animation and the direction in the major battle that picks off where the cliffhanger of last season left off is said to be visually amazing and on par with high production theatrical anime.
