There is too much Oreimo in this thread.

First three movies.

Just watch the original movies - the pacing is much better than the television series, and it makes a few minor story changes that are considered canonical in the UC time-line.

For First Gundam, watch the movies, the TV show shows its age and is only really interesting for historical nitpicking.

If you like them, move on to Zeta--the TV show's the better option there, it holds up a lot better. After that, Char's Counterattack.

then come back to us so we can have the once-a-thread flamewar about which UC OVAs are the best.
One of these days I want to see someone recommend the TV series. Just for a change of pace.
You're just a slave to 19th century naturalistic fiction, man.

I approve of this reference.

i just can't come to terms with DEEN doing something as visually impressive as Sankarea and Gainax doing some silly shounen show. anime really has changed.
GAINAX have made some shitty looking stuff before, it's just that people remember the Gurren Lagann's and Panty and Stocking's of the world.

I need to check out the actual series sometime so I can revisit Doan's Island, witness the Gundam Hammer in action, and likely approve of M'Quve's Gyan being left out of the movies.

Watch "This Ugly Yet Beautiful World". I only bought this series because it looks like A Mahoromatic clone. Its NOT a clone of that show, but it is rather dumb. It does have Akari in it and well...

Exactly. Some people have learned nothing from the waifu generatormountain. I didn't choose Saber as my waifu, but she's a king and has an invisible sword, so it can't be helped.

This is one of those posts that makes you look insane if you haven't been reading the thread for months.

In which case you already know everyone here is insane.

Now and Then, Here and There 5

I'm think I'm getting the hang of this now and starting to enjoy it.

Now and Then, Here and There

This is why I mentioned contrivance earlier. Is the show subjecting the characters to these things because it's trying to pile on the suffering in a cheap manner to make us eel bad, or it simply trying to portray a really awful situation? I guess that depends on how you approach the work and how you feel the director has constructed the scenario and characters - do they make this seem plausible?

If we step back from this particular show for a moment - whenever a show or movie decides to show us characters experiencing a long series of bad events and suffering immensely there is always the potential for it to be "emotionally manipulative garbage". This is usually due to the manner in which it is presented by the director.

All of this raises the question - is there a way to present a story in such a way that it can be swallowed by the audience? Because NTHT is clearly trying to tackle a serious subject, perhaps some would complain that it does so in a 'anime manner', but I don't know. What I've read of actual child soldiers tends to be extremely bleak material.

I think in my case I was going into this expecting something more "anime"and other misconceptions that the first episode helped enforce.
I realized the setting and the whole Lala Ru/pendant plotline is secondary so far to the other characters. I was wondering today why I'm enjoying Abelia as a character and it occured to me how she's apparently a buffer between Hamdo and the rest of Hellywood and being crushed under the weight of keeping order in spite of the whims of a man who doesn't simply act like a child but apparently actually has the faculties of one given how he's portrayed and her loyalty to him. Also after watching episode five I have the notion Sara and Shu are being used to illustrate the difficulties of being abducted and how different their integration is. Shu meets everything with defiance while Sara is reduced to resignation. I might have simply not seen another but outside of Lala Ru and Abelia, are there really no other females around? I'd imagine this would make her segregation from everyone else make much more sense. It's interesting to watch Nabuca's indoctrination begin to fracture as well.

Now and Then, Here and There 6

Well of course after I type something I see
Sara does have some fight left in her. Hamdo's orders for her to breed makes me wonder why Abelia is apparently off-limits. Also it's weird to see Hellywood apparently wasn't so much a community struggling to survive in some inhospitable but are apparently the actual aggressors.

smh at destroying farmland and water sources though

I still have yet to see anyone else mention Kare Kano :(
Although Kare Kano is more of no budget kind of situation rather than shitty looking. I still love it though.

Maybe I'm coming in at the wrong time.

But...IT HAS PANTY SHOTS AND CANT POSSIBLY BE GOOD.
Blatant pantyshots in a show is like having an iron ball chained to your ankle in a 100m sprint. Sure, some manage to put in a good showing regardless but think of what they could be without the handicap.

these bad guys sure are doing a pretty damn good job at carrying out their nefarious plan.

Yeah, I actually forgot about their lesser known (and for good reason) works. It doesn't help that pretty much all the talent left. :(

Akanbe sucks. worst part of Precure smile. Everything else is sublime though.
