Queen's Blade Rebellion 1

Move aside Marika, Captain Liliana has come!

This was good. Lots of fanservice, ranging from dresses that become transparent during a fight:

to bouncing boobs in full exposure, some action and a few returning characters. I'm a little confused about a couple things though, like why Ymir would be serving the Queen instead of trying to sell her wares, but maybe I should have watched those two OVA prequels.
I guess that princess knight will be the new Reina, though I'd hope for Reina to make a comeback because I can't believe she'd stand for what Claudette goes around doing!

She does make a pretty convincing pirate. but thanks for screencapping it so I can just get the picture and save time from having to watch it.

The series been selling ok... never thought it would go 3 seasons with 2 ovas.

This is a nice healthy anime thread. I don't see what the fuss is about. It has lively and exciting discussion about a broad range of ---- subjects.

Queen's Blade sells far better than a lot of the shows favoured around here, and from what I understand it does okay in the US as well.

Revolutionary Girl Utena 5 or how I learned to stop worrying and love the Apocalypse

I've decided my problem with that sequence is entirely in the boring art, and has nothing to do with the song, which is actually pretty cool. Maybe eventually I'll enjoy everything about it. Stockholm Syndrome setting in?

Not that I'll forgive this shot. I know what they want to do here, but it looks really silly when one of the characters is upside down.

Good episode. Miki's a really pitiable character. He's so insecure and naive. The flashbacks did a good job of driving that home. You can see how he leans on that hope of Anthy's affection in interesting ways.

It took me a while to realize the implications of this scene. Touga is truly irresistible.

Seeing the actual truth behind the fable of Miki's past has me more intrigued than ever about Utena's own history.
Both flashbacks are presented in the same way. Both have some resemblance to reality, but are deeply distorted by the perceptions of the people retelling the story, an idealized fiction of a past moment.

I'm not really looking forward to a Nanami focused episode.

I remember lurking in here a while, checking out animeGAF before posting. I don't remember why though. Maybe it felt intimidating?

It's because we're an established community, and entering a community is always a bit weird. There's stuff like assumed knowledge of topics and of other community members that can be offputting.

Also AnimeGAF is a bit more hardcore than usual.

Apparently it takes courage to post. That was never a problem for me personally so I don;t really understand the phenomenon.

It doesn't help that pretty much every opinion will be contested by someone. You can only hope you'll be on the opposite side of the members that will give the least venomous responses.

It's also kind of intimidating when people just post a ton of staff lists and studios, something a majority of anime fans don't give a shit about or are even aware of.

I think my posting goes something like 97% animeGAf, 2% NFLGAF, and 1% othershitGAF.

There are wolves outside. It is safe in here.

Yeah, I still probably can't name more than 4/5 studios on the top of my head. Don't get me started with staff.
I just stay out of immediate conversation beyond my knowledge/care.

I have always been known for being stubborn with my opinions, whether popular ones or not. I guess I never really gave a shit because I like what I like. I've had plenty of insults thrown my way but it doesn't phase me. Im like the honey badger.

Also, the studio thing is true, as I never really followed studios and only knew a couple by name such as Gainax and Toei and Ghibli. Now I know dozens and its all you guys' fault.

Now and Then, Here and There

I think I described it as more cheap shock value to evoke a sense of just how horrible everything is.
Shu getting beat up constantly, whatever happened to Sara, and the use of a dead cat as a prop in the interrogation scene just struck me as more or less as bad things happening because bad things happen.
Maybe there's a purpose, I hope there is but when I'm finding myself sympathizing more with Abelia who looked bedraggled while marking off her map in this episode rather than whatever the protagonist is dealing with.

This is why I mentioned contrivance earlier. Is the show subjecting the characters to these things because it's trying to pile on the suffering in a cheap manner to make us eel bad, or it simply trying to portray a really awful situation? I guess that depends on how you approach the work and how you feel the director has constructed the scenario and characters - do they make this seem plausible?

If we step back from this particular show for a moment - whenever a show or movie decides to show us characters experiencing a long series of bad events and suffering immensely there is always the potential for it to be "emotionally manipulative garbage". This is usually due to the manner in which it is presented by the director.

All of this raises the question - is there a way to present a story in such a way that it can be swallowed by the audience? Because NTHT is clearly trying to tackle a serious subject, perhaps some would complain that it does so in a 'anime manner', but I don't know. What I've read of actual child soldiers tends to be extremely bleak material.

Watch Saikano if you want to talk about truly manipulating emotions.
That show drags your emotions and the characters through the mud and then devours them.

I don't know. Opinions are going to be questioned but I considered that to be a positive trait. I enjoy how this thread has such a breadth of tastes too. It's introduced me to some great stuff.

I came in here with my minuscule knowledge of anime asking a few questions, and the responses I got were very helpful. I don't see how it is a trouble to post.

There are really only a few threads where the whole "no newbies" mentality is present. Most of GAF I find is very open and helpful, including this thread.

Indeed. and studios are fine but staff lists are just offputting. How do you guys even remember this stuff...

Now educate youself more with the tree diagram.

...why ;_;

Hah, that's pretty much me. The only studios I knew was Gainax before animegaf. I knew of Toei, but I thought they were a TV station, not a studio. Since joining the community, I've wiki'd every single studio that people end up talking about and now I know stuff.

I still have no clue what a lot of people are talking about regarding other stuff though.

From what I uderstand, Ben-to started sucking, so they all left.

Don't worry, though, as wolves will return to the thread this summer.

The wolves in here are just puppies. Adorable squishy little puppies.

Thanks. thats pretty useful and I do recognize a lot more than I thought.

I forgot to mention JC Staff and Bee Train earlier. I like those studios as well.
