I see the Fate/Zero infidels are showing up now. Good, good. We'll just round them up and exile them to the Upotte!! thread when Berserker is ready. :D

This is so awesome, and so very odd.

E: Whoa, are they wrapping this around material farther ahead? They have Takasugi and Kamui being bros.

Yeah, it's like a mishmash of Gintama highlights. The
One Piece
intro, the fight between
Kagura, Kamui, and THEIR FATHER
, and even small bits like
HijikataxGintoki
and the like.

It's pure fanservice, but put into the context of a made-up episode with its own arc. Pretty amazing.

Really? I actually got a worse impression of him after that conversation.
It felt more like he just didn't care what happened to Sakura because MAGIC is more important than lowly human concerns like not having a nightmarish childhood.

Yeah, I feel that conversation extremely revealing and very enjoyable, form a character perspective. They're both discussing an event that happened in the show itself but they're each looking at it through their own subjective lenses which have been established because the characters have been well established. Both sides clearly thought that they were in the right, and that the other side was shameful and vile and we, as the audience, could see where they were both coming from.

It also counters the argument that 'nothing happened in this episode but a bunch of action scenes'.

8 hours till this hits Crunchyroll so I've only seen the trailer at this point, but in regards to the main girl's voice, I'm afraid I have to agree with the NicoNico reactions:

Maybe she'll get better over time.

People are so conditioned by the usual melodramatic anime voice acting that they can't accept anything outside the box.

See, this is why we can't have nice things. As soon as you have a voice actress who doesn't sound exactly like everyone else, people complain. How disappointing.

Saying you agree with niconico comments is like saying you agree with youtube comments. In other words, its a shame that should never be revealed.

Yeah I really liked her VA in MGX. It was different but it was nice.

Anyhow I'm probably gonna keep up with the show for another few episodes at least.

Man, it'd been so long since I read the first chapter that I forgot some of those plot points even existed.
Anyway, this was simultaneously really awesome and really weird to finally see animated. Looking forward to seeing what they can do with some anime-original material.

Why is there a pair of scissors in her panty-band?

Because. Thats why.
There need be no reasoning behind it.

I think anime has already taught us why girls carry scissors - for offensive and defensive purposes.

Sukeban Deka taught us the defensive and potentially deadly properties of yoyos. Scissors have to be pretty high on the list of common everyday weapons.

That is hilariously wrong and would be even better photoshopped with Midori's puppy scene.

All hail goddess Chiaki.

I didn't realise that anime fans were so conservative about voice acting.

I don't see how that's a surprise. The otaku always want everything the same. The same lame, boring protagonists. The same annoying, undifferentiated female character stereotypes. The same fanservice. The same endings. Anything that tries to be different is met with scorn from them.

Guys, don't be fooled by the ridiculous premise. You'll find a soul-suckingly good tale of camaraderie between guns, girls and a normal human teacher. The depth in which they describe the characters, the interactions that allow us to truly understand what breadth the characters' motivations are is simply mindblowing. The cruel naming of the girls as guns symbolise their struggle to escape the fate of being just another gun stereotype under the dictatorial-like hierarchy of their school. This is just the first episode but I think we'll see a lot more development for episodes to come, culminating in a story that moves the audience to tears.

Folks, don't be fooled, this is most likely the second coming of Gunslinger Girl, believe it or not. Other contesters for best show of the season like Fate/Zero, Sakamachi no Apollon, Lupin the Third can eat their hearts out. We've got a winner here already.

They're really nailing that old anime look which is nostalgic. I better resume reading the manga which I stopped around chapter 50.

Wheelchair,toothbrush,guns and now drool.

To me their perspectives and reasoning are a known quantity at this point. It also makes for a lousy discussion when one guy is blabbing away while the other spends most of it crippled over in gestation or something. He would keep the conversation idly going by throwing out lines about how he'll never forgive him, but there wasn't too much on his part beyond that.

It's kinda hard to talk much when you're
trying to keep the worms in your body from killing you, trying to control an insane beast who is controlling a fighter jet AND missiles in the air, and trying to control a bunch of killer insects, all at the same time.

I'm not blaming the guy. It is a confrontation that's been built up for a long time now and it just didn't involve the interplay I would want from something like that. Obviously that will change in the next episode with where the encounter seems to be heading, but I feel like the stage could have been set better.

But can we really expect a guy who has spent 13 episodes sitting in a chair "scheming" without moving, to suddenly have reflexes to stop talking and to actually just get on with it and fight? Certainly not! He has to warm up to it! Lololol. <3 Tokiomi <3

I don't know about that,
Tokiomi hasn't really been confronted on this issue before,
so seeing his viewpoint and explanation was very important.

I think the only known about Tokiomi so far was about his plans for the holy grail war, this was actually the first time I heard him explain his reasoning for Sakura's situation or anything regarding his family in the holy grail war for that matter.

Fat/Xer0x stuff:

The conversation in ep14 works extra well if you've seen the extended scene between Kotomine and Gilgamesh in ep6 imo.

It really lays the foundation for the basis that Tokiomi is a true mage who is obsessed with his evolution in magic to reach outside this world, and hence he does not see reality in the same way people who have attachments to the physical world do.

The conversation here from Tokiomi's own mouth basically confirms that his view is warped and different from how normal people see things, and his long term view of his blood line and the objective of his existence has nothing to do with material goals. In other words, he feels he is a good guy but he's pretty much batshit insane.

I'm merely informing people of the genius of Upotte.

Alright, don't worry, I'll stop.

Indeed. The confrontation between Tokiomi and Kariya was to show the viewer how deluded Tokiomi had become and how he tries to justify his methods and deeds. It may have felt unnecessary but it served its purpose well enough.

Agree with this post. I didn't know about the extended scene though. Is it for an episode to episode basis or does every episode have some extended scenes?

Ep2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, and 13 all have extra and/or extended scenes. The episodes which do not have extended runtimes still have various improvements in terms of either art corrections or improved lighting and transparency effects.

Ep11 and 12 have the most scenes added, and the broadcast versions were substantially cut down because of limited run time. Ep13 and 9 are also have quite a few additions, followed by the remaining episodes which generally have about one scene added or extended, or uncensored stuff.

In total the BD versions have over 20 minutes of extra footage across the first season.

This is what I'm getting at. It's far more interesting to see two people who think they are good guys clash than one goodie and one baddie, even if Ryunosuke is good for a chuckle or too.

We've gotten more on Tokiomi's family and how they relates to the Grail War than some of the actual players in the Grail War. There's a whole episode devoted to that.

I totally understand how it fleshes out that aspect of his character, and why people would like the scene. To me, most of these things have been implied or hinted at in ways where I could reach the conclusion adequately on my own that Tokiomi is a character very much obsessed with lineage while neglecting his own family beyond ensuring their future success. When it becomes the main talking point for an entire episode that seems like a lot of time devoted to something so insignificant, even for a series like F/Z.

It is not at all uncommon for evil doers to think themselves righteous.
Even in this situation you have the guy who sacrificed himself for the good of an innocent child versus a greedy and selfish schemer. The line between good and evil is drawn pretty clearly.

This girl is craaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy.

Well there's no denying this was well-directed and produced. The art and sound design in particular combined to give this a very different feel than the average anime, even ignoring the bizarre story. You certainly can't describe it as generic. At the same time, all the saliva stuff is pretty gross. I mean, body mutilation and child murder is one thing, this is another.

I'll keep watching for now, but I hope this doesn't just turn into some weirdo's fetish vehicle.

There was also this weird random sandkuga shot:

And what's with this kid having a pristine Star Wars poster?!

To anybody who's ever been on the dub side of a dub vs. sub debate and posted the words, "How can you even know if Japanese VAs sound good if you don't speak Japanese?", feel free to refer back to this thread for proof that you're right.

Not that we didn't already know that from Corpse Princess...
