meh. If repeating the first part of the show wasn't already a blatant cost-cutting measure, it would still be unbelievably stupid because the original sequence was already indicating HEY, THIS IS ALL HAPPENING BECAUSE OF A GHOST about as directly as it possibly could. Everyone's pessimism about Silver Link appears to have been well-founded. This was some of the most hamfisted exposition and character establishment I've ever seen, though it didn't help that the characters seem pretty dull regardless.

Add in some really terrible CG backgrounds and a general lack of animation and this one can pretty much be declared dead on arrival. I wonder whether I'll drop this or Medaka Box first.

Tell us how you really feel.

Nope, Zhang He is a really effeminate officer allied with Wei. Apparently Koihime Musou uses the Japanese readings of the characters' names, so let me see if I can find Zhang He's Japanese name and I'll try to get back to you on that.
though from the sound of it, fake Liu Bei has nothing to do with Zhang He so I suppose just nevermind on that :p
Gi (Wei) has only one Zhang on its side, Choryo (Zhang Liao). Zhang He may not be in the anime, unfortunately. Of course, if he was genderswappd with so many lesbian characters (for instance, how Sousou (Cao Cao) wants Kannu pretty badly) she wouldn't stand out that much... and if not genderswapped, well, the officers all are.

The problem is that F/SN anime only adapted (mostly) the first of 3 routes, of which the first is the one where Shirou is downright retarded. He's much better in the UBW movie, and apparently the last route is very different from what was seen in the anime and movie. But yeah, he was breathtakingly stupid for a good 75% of the anime's run, only redeeming himself near the end.
You're right about how stupid Shirou is in the first route, but they could have made something up to make it not quite as terrible or something, instead of if anything making it worse...

Well, F/SN deals with mostly high-school kids most of which aren't even proper mages. Contrast that with Fate/Zero and it's not much of a contest. That being said, there are 3 Shirous and we only saw the dumbest one if we only watched the anime. :(
I know, but that's not the biggest problem with it. I mean, Rin's great, but she's only in high school... and even Sakura, Saber, etc. aren't as bad as Shirou. He drags the whole show down. But sure, as far as fighting goes, sure they can't compare with adults like in F/Z.

I'll let you know in about 30-40 hours. >_>

The good news is that you are actually
Rin
for the entire Prologue chapter. I learned a lot about how to think like a tsundere in the Prologue. The bad news is then you are Dumbest Shirou for the first route (Fate) and you need to finish that route to unlock Unlimited Blade Works. Sigh.
So cruel, to start with an actually decent character, only to be dumped into Shirou for dozens of hours.

;_;

That was the sound of my heart breaking.

Hyperbole aside, I still enjoyed Il Teatrino even though Madhouse's take on the franchise seemed to fit Gunslinger Girl like a glove. I guess I'll read it just because of how much I love GSG but I won't be expecting anything amazing. *puts on backlog*
I haven't read the manga myself, but yeah, I'm not exactly putting it high on my list either to say the least.

Well I wouldn't say Fate route Shirou is downright retarded <_< Idealistic and bigoted, mixed in with the usual harem lead vapidness sounds better.
You forgot unbelievably sexist, too, to a degree I've only also seen in the Maken-Ki lead in his attempts to stop girls from fighting even when they're strong and quite capable. He's also that. But yeah, you're mostly right... but seriously, between the usaul harem lead vapidness, and the bigoted sexism, isn't calling him something of an idiot fair?

I'd say Fate/Zero's strength lies in Urobuchi's writing augmenting Nasu's usual style. I think someone mentioned this before that Nasu's strength lies in the world building and general atmosphere of the setting. His character's aren't that strong though it helps that the length of the VN allows more instances of character development throughout the story. I feel Urobuchi uses his skill in plot and character development to flesh out Fate/Zero far beyond what Nasu can do alone and that makes F/Z a superior experience overall.

tldr; Fate/Zero is fucking awesome guys, don't be discouraged by the less than stellar F/SN anime.
You're right that the setting and world of F/SN are interesting, and it's the characters and story that bring it down.

YKK isn't nihilistic because it doesn't assume that humanity will just give up when faced with extinction. It's also not "Pleasantville" or that island from "The Prisoner" or some other false utopia that we've seen on Star Trek countless times. That would be nihilistic, if beneath the surface there was some puppet master controlling humanity or some such. But it's not. Ultimately, it's about growing old and being comfortable with the limitations of your life as a human being.
really? Haven't you described it otherwise before, though? Or what about Sora no Woto...
didn't you mind the "humanity might possibly be doomed" plotline a lot less than I did? I mean, I left the series hoping that they'd find a way to save the world, in a made-up future where the series actually continues like it should, but I don't know if you cared as much or not...

Thanks, guys. I didn't really mind the pacing of the original, but some additional action certainly couldn't hurt. Kinda lame that it's just a 3 part OVA, but it sounds like it's worth checking out.
.hack//Quantum is definitely worth checking out, yeah!

I take it you haven't played the //sign games? That's exactly what they are.

edit: not that I'd necessarily recommend them, though. I liked them, but they're not exactly masterpieces.
That's exactly what they are? Not really, no MMO I know of has button-mashing combat like the .hack games do...

Harder the pain, better the gain?
Nope, you just need to get used to the art and clearly lower budget. Once you do it's a good version.

The problem is that kyoani has a 'stick' now.

Do we really want a FMP where Tessa has the kyoani patented moeblob face?

Yes we do.
... You do know that post-TSR FMP goes full-on grimdark, yes? How would moeblob fit in there?

I don't remember there being a difference. Well One was like a Shmup or something.

Rin is best character and best tsundere.

I can understand Shirou's mentality though. It's somewhat sexist but that sentiment still exists and his mindset is more of a traditional form of chivalry anyway.

The anime ends just when shit gets uber dark. That's part of the injustice of the whole thing in that we miss the really good stuff.

Oh yes I remember now. The first game had a slightly different "season one" of Bizarre Jelly with only the three girls, and the second game added the other girls into it and changed the style a bit with that cleverly made video of the opening credits.
Man I want a no More Heroes 3.

He could have been summoned as part of his duty and with the pendant Rin had as a catalyst was summoned him for duty specifically.

F/SN Spoilers that make no sense to me:

Why would Rin use that pendant as a catalyst if (at the moment it is used) it has no historical significance whatsoever?
Seems like a pretty stupid choice if you want to wind up with a Servant.

I don't exactly remember but wasn't that Rin's strongest jewel she had gotten from her father so she used it to augment her mana in order to have the best summoning possible. Or she used it as a lucky charm.

A pretty fair number. Ahoge seems to be the trendy thing this season.

And that's a good thing. There can never be enough ahoge!

It wasn't intentional.
She just used her strongest gem, it wasn't meant to be a catalyst.
