Good anime, but I think I'm going to have to drop it because it's not really hooking me with anything.

Can't really watch a music anime about music (instead of a music anime about chipmunks) without being able to hear the music.

You don't think they're going to have music in the show?

The "hook" is the music and the chemistry that Sentaro and Nishima have as bros.
Its not really the kind of show that just hooks you unless you are actively interested in the subject matter to begin with. Its not going to surprise anyone who doesnt like Jazz or slice of life shows.

Clearly there are two factions here. We will fight to the end of time. The only question is - which faction rides ponies?

Both of them. :(

We all know that under our masks we are all ponies.

Some of wear the our ponies on the outside, although hat seems to be largely the result of losing bets.

This is the worst thing in the history of worst things ever. The art is bad, the animation is stiff, the music is generic, the humour dull, the characterisation cliché, the premise stupid, and everyone is a twat. Also, furries:

Fuck you GAINAX. Stay in your fucking coffin and never come out again.

Wow, and I thought Apollon had some ugly art!
I got you covered.

Now that's more like it.

The Light of El Cantare
Lupin III: Woman Named Fujiko Mine 02:

I enjoyed this episode a lot more than the first. I don't know if it had more to do with the visual direction overflowing with beautiful 70s aesthetic this week or because Jigen's personality fits the darker tone of this series more than Lupin's, but something worked better for me this time.

From my limited experience with Lupin, this felt more like a traditionally Lupin episode--
lots of betrayal, guns, and money
. The only thing that felt a bit off was Jigen, who was more sullen than I remember him being in Lupin, where he would often have a grin on his face and a touch of gleeful smugness over his own abilities. Though, I suppose that
if the series is continuing with the idea that everything takes place before Lupin and Jigen team up and Lupin is the influence that gets Jigen to lighten up
, then it makes more sense. Feels good to finally be excited about the show.

No, that is not what I mean.

I'm hard of hearing, so I don't think I would be able to properly enjoy Apollon.

Sorry to hear about that. Personally I still feel like the shows's visuals would keep me entertained, after all, there was barely any music in this opening episode, but what was there was used well.

Such a nice house, and on the beach too. This town would be an awesome place to live.

Nakamura is back! Sweet first episode. Very up beat and charming. As duckroll mentioned, its like a sugar rush. Indeed, fun to watch. The artstyle is beautiful, with some often detailed background art, that makes for a pretty visually interesting show. The color usage in particular makes it engaging. I also enjoyed the intro to the episode. The music was a perfect fit for the tone of the show, some good tunes in there for sure. Lots of great music in general this season.

There's also some cool moments of animation like the scene above, or the water bursting out of the classroom windows. The "drowning underwater" imagery was well used throughout the episode; being overwhelmed or in over your head is a relatable feeling. I like that they had Yuki being visually pulled out of the water by the fish, as a metaphor for being pulled out of his usual freakout.

I don't have the images but that cut from the fishes tail to the back of Yuki's head was also pretty slick.

And some headphones for Geneijin

For clarification: if I were to say about a work that all that stood out to me were its tropes, what I would mean by that is that it is a clumsy, poorly stitched-together bundle of cliches which fail to create a world and characters I can accept as real. Tropes are in everything, but if they are the only notable thing it shows a serious lack of skill and creativity on the creator's part. Is that what you are trying to say?
Well, I'm saying it didn't really have a hook that made me care more about the show that what was happening academically. Chihayafuru's opening episodes are probably as cliche as anything you can get, complete with the :firehawk/Secret Base-inspired ending where Arata moves away. For some reason, perhaps its because I prefer the Chihayafuru OST to jazz, I was much more invested in Arata's love of karuta than this guy's love of jazz. I'll compare the two noitaminA shows directly: if you break it down mechanically to their essence, Apollon and Tsuritama basically had the same first episodes in terms of their function - introducing the characters and the world to the audience. I just had a much more visceral reaction when I was watching Tsuritama.

I'm hoping when the band forms, which I assume is the case based on the characters that pop up in the OP, the show opens up so that we don't need exposition about transfer students and social outcasts any more (hey, the bully is just misunderstood and is actually a softy! Who knew?!)

See, this kind of thing is what leads people to accuse you of not caring about execution. Visual storytelling is not the same thing as exposition.

I have issues with the visual presentation. Mostly art style (Ri-chan is ugly) and shading (blobby mess), and lack of weight behind the characters' movements (fight scene was awful). All in all it's not something I typically enjoy, though I can appreciate the quality.

Well, I think it's kind of hard to doubt that music will pay a large role in the show considering the two bro's have already expressed their different personalities through music. Of course, it wasn't used very extensively elsewhere.

Sounds like a first episode recap.

This was okay. I enjoy the colors, but am not a fan of the general character design.
Aquamaaaaaan

Anyways, for myself, less of a sugar rush and more of a splash of cool water (lol!) in the afternoon. I'll watch infrequently.

Feels good to finally be excited about the show.

Good to hear you're liking it more, but you might not want to expect Jigen in every episode!

I sincerely doubt you were intending to be offensive, but you might want to think of a new way of expressing regret when talking to those who are hard of hearing. :)

So dat, opening. Love it, just love it.
Wow, I didn't even realize the first episode was over when it was, since I was already that into it. I really do like how the music goes with scenes, something that was very noticeable.

Those two will totally do it, of course.

Wow, you're right, that was stupid of me. I hope Haly forgives me for being a dumbass :(
It's fine, I didn't even notice it until it was pointed out.

Then I got a chuckle out of it.

So we are agreeing there's nothing left worth salvaging at GAINAX? Because it sounds like you are agreeing with me.
I was going to say that the youngsters there are doing a decent job with the animation without any big names (except the mentioned Mr. Tanaka), and that it demonstrates the good job the studio does at nurturing new talent (and exploiting their own in-betweeners, as manuloz noted) but...

...I won't say anything.
