Another solid episode.
That stuff with the father was rather unsettling.

It's funny that I've become desensitized to that particular story trope. It probably doesn't help that it's a storyline that pops up in every cop show ever.

Yeah that sort of plot point is not particularly unique, but to me it was presented and executed in a way that made it seem...different i guess?

Hey guys. So I getting ready to pull the trigger on buying the Utena series on DVD. This won't come out on blu ray anytime soon, right?

Meet Viscous, our resident villain of the series

Apart from some of the imagery being a bit heavy handed, the direction of this episode was a cut above the rest. Religious imagery is often shoved into shows or movies simply to lend an air of gravitas without any real meaning to it, but in a story of redemption, betrayal, and atonement, the symbolism is at least understandable.

W7VGH.jpg

Also, stained glass is pretty

The hints of Bebop's past grow stronger than ever as he returns to meet old acquaintances. Syndicates have been warring, but peace is imminent, when good ol' Viciuos decides to crash the party.

ibCJ2.jpg

You can tell he is evil because he has a pet on his shoulder.

rjpdu.jpg

Bebop meets with his Waifu

Space Usagi does what Space Usagi does best, and easily gets caught by the Vciious Underlings.

Bebop, meanwhile, needs to weigh his past, and just what is important to him. It seems to me that he was motivated more by a need to get personal revenge on Viciosu, than to help Space Usagi or revenge Mao.

So much swag

The highlight of the episode, was the gunfight in the church. Churches are a really cheap way to force symbolism into anything, but I guess people keep on doing it because it's effective. The constant parallels of the falling torn letter, glass, feathers, and so on was well executed, linking easily from one scene to the next.

The animation of the gunfight was excellent, but I think the point of the gunfight wasn't just to give the animators a chance to stretch their fingers, but to show that Bebop isn't just a "good guy". We've never seen him go berserk before, and while he didn't really go crazy here, there was a complete lack of restraint in his actions. The whole falling scene, with his past life flashing before his eyes, is a clever way to build a character without needing an exposition dump.

Tt8G0.jpg

The explosions in this show have been consistently great

The architecture and camerawork in this episode was excellent, even if it was fairly standard stuff for something with this atmospere.

Episodes like this help keep the rest of the show grounded; if every episode was this heavy, this wouldn't be as much fun (and it would be a completely different show, to be honest), but it helps uncover the darker side to the characters, that the other episodes don't.

Well, another pretty good episode. I'm liking the two main leads, most of the supporting cast are pretty good, and its whole gimmick isn't surprisingly as stupid as it sounds like.

something something firehawk something tropes

Yesterday's episode of Awake basically had the same thing and at some point,
fathers raping their daughters
becomes mundane. Like, it's supposed to be shocking and perhaps taboo and explicit, but - at least in fiction anyway - it is old hat. I'd hope I have enough humanity in me that if a real woman told me about that particular trauma, I could respond without thinking about how contrived her story sounds. lol

As if anyone in here would watch some shitty western TV show!

It appears in books too. I think every celebrated female Canadian author has a story that uses that particular trauma in some form. lol

It's just that it's totally cheapened because of TV cop shows that are running out of crimes to portray on television.

I guess if, as a reader, I'm supposed to feel sympathy for a character simply because they were
sexually abused by an authority figure
, they need to go out of their way to convince me to care for them. Suffering that particular form of abuse is just not enough any more.

I haven't seen sankarea the anime yet(and won't be seeing it for quite sometime),but what's different? have you read the manga to compare it to it?

I once liked sankarea manga but that was a longtime ago.

The tone is much heavier and more serious compared to the manga.

Anyway whoever is directing the anime knows what they're doing. Very subtle use of foreshadowing and the difference in tone has impressed me so far. Animation quality is topnotch. Is this seriously DEEN? Like what the hell.

I still hate that bitch Kurumi, the fact that the entire episode was dedicated to her was painful.

And did the OP reveal some possible pairings that take place in the manga like RyuxYoshida and YanoxPin? No! Don't tell me! Exciting!

Kurumi is boss!

Sounds like some Law and Order.
It's not just cop shows. I'm pretty sure there's a whole channel that revolves around it.

Oh god, Lifetime movies. That's even worse than cop shows!

Shining Hearts 01 Bread! Bread!! Bread!!! 01
Look at all that bread.
I really didn't know there was a bakery RPG. Why didn't that get localized? I mean this is definitely not based off a JRPG unless it is one where you use bread to solve wars and deal with the supply and demand against competing bakeries. I liked the fetch quest for collecting baking goods and all that necessary scenes of baking the bread.

I don't get why we need elves or that Not-Kyubey. That has nothing to do with bread!

play the game!

elves and not kyubeys are important ingredients for magic bread (to solve wars and stuff).

Well, from the
OP
in the first episode I knew something was up with the
father
. It was like a free hint card.
Like firehawk, I'm desensitized to this (and similar) plot elements.

Still kinda liked the episode though,
Babu go "Bwwwaaaargh!"
.

Once you read the news and go, "This genocide trope is so old hat," you know you're too far gone.

Well, when it happened in the original Valkyria Chronicles, I thought it was more "cute" than "tragic". :p

The Light of El Cantare
Sankarea 02:

EvjtJ.jpg

This was an interesting variation on the bands of color in the ED.

I'm so pleased that the series maintained its level of quality this week. While several locales were reused, which resulted in there being a less-rich variance in settings and backdrops, production values remained high and the strong emphasis on atmospheric lighting was still present.

It's really wonderful that
Rea's tragic backstory
was given the serious treatment that it deserved. There was no noticeable intent to
titillate
, and on the whole
the episode did a great job of making Rea's desire to die believable and sympathetic
. On a personal note
I had a possessive, abusive father who severely restricted my life in the name of "love" and didn't hesitate to destroy the things that made me happy if I questioned or disobeyed him
, so this episode really hit home.

Some are describing Sankarea as "zombie moe", but it's been treated with such a level of class and seriousness so far that I think it does a disservice to the show to reduce it to a term with dismissive connotations. There are certainly stereotypical anime elements (Wanko's character being the most prevalent example), but at this point Sankarea really can't be labeled as otaku fodder. It's something legitimately special.

You're opening up a can of worms here, particularly with the definition of "moe".

And it definitely is otaku fodder. A more subdued tone won't change that.

Tsuritama 1 - That was really good, it's so unlike anything Nakamura has done before, yet it's very Nakamura in how atmosphere-driven it is, the aim of the episode really felt like it was aiming to portray a certain mood and it pulled it off perfectly due to how well-done the art direction and direction was, not to mention the music.. wow. I'm kind of interested in what the "plot" of the series is going be, because it's overall tone feels very much like a slice-of-life series more than anything else, looking forward to seeing how weird and crazy it gets as the series progresses. But at this point it's easily my second favorite show of this season (right behind koikelupin) with how packed this season is, that's pretty high praise!

Eureka seven AO - This really hit all the right notes for me, I think I almost cried when I saw the
flashback between AO and Eureka
although not my favorite show this season, this is one where I'm most excited in seeing how it plays out in the future, there's so much potential for greatness here, especially since they got the tone, music, atmosphere and to a lesser extent characterization all right, it's been so long since we got a "good" mecha series like this, so I hope BONES don't fuck it up.:)

Aside from 2 and 5, that male list is looking pretty good.

Not sure about the other one though...

Yeah, I was just about to say. I can live with that male list, but Inori and multiple KyoAni moeblobs makes the female list pretty worthless.

Regardless of the definition of moe, I don't think it's incorrect to say that it's generally used pejoratively here and implies a lack of substance. I'm kind of using it as an interchangeable term with "otaku fodder" here.
