While it's true that we don't need a 128 bit address space for IPs, it's nice to see them planning ahead to avoid the problem from ever happening again. Meanwhile we could probably exhaust a 64 bit address space before space flight becomes a reality. All we need to do is to screw up our orbit with tons of debris. That'll sufficiently delay any chances of getting off this rock.

I'm talking about the CPU address space, which is the amount of memory addresses a logic unit can access in one time, therefore the amount of random access memory your computer can have. For 64-bit, that is 2^64 or 16 exbibytes (1 billion times the common amount of memory we now have, which is the same as 1GB is to 1 bytes). Being able to make 32 exbibyte RAM probably means we can make high energy powered lasers that can blast those rocks to pieces. Maybe you're confused because the IPv6 addresses use a 128 bit address space too, which means that there are 10^38 addresses available, or about 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 devices per person on earth.

Nah, I wasn't confused at all. I was purposely taking advantage of the ambiguity of the original statement and bending it by using another address space, thus allowing me to demand a space ship now. It was meant to be a joke. =P From there it just continued to go more off on a tangent as you've taken it seriously.

Anyhow, in the case of Star Citizen, not everything needs to be loaded into memory at one time to take advantage of it. We just need to accurately know where something is. Using 64 bit integers allows a greater area to be accurately mapped at a given resolution. A 128 bit integer would allow an even greater area to be dealt with accurately - albeit at a computational cost. Even if you were only dealing with the positions of a few hundred objects, if they're sufficiently far apart, you need the precision that the larger numbers afford you.

i just got invited to the PTU. CIG earlier said people would be picked if they logged into the game today.. i cant wait for the dl to finish.

i have to say the social module is blowing me away.. it looks pretty damn good.

I'm noticing all these puddles with reflections in the water. Obviously not real-time reflections, but just such a neat detail.

Also, 1.2a PTU Patch Notes.

Star Citizen Patch 1.2.0a Patch
As Bearded-CIG mentioned previously, invites to the PTU are going to be going out in waves. This is to allow us to monitor and gather information about how various aspects of the game aspects are behaving at different population levels. Invites will be sent via email and include steps for how to get into the PTU. As always, it's a good idea to be wary of any emails that you think may not be legitimate. If you aren't sure about the legitimacy of an email and don't want to click on a link to protect your computer security, right click the link, select "copy link location" and paste it into a search engine like google. Most popular search engines will give a warning if a site is malicious.

Customer Service does not have control over who it getting invites. Please don't contact them for invites and make more work for them. If you'd like an invite and haven't gotten one, be patient and keep an eye out for emails as we expand the pool of testers. Thank you so much for your cooperation!

This hotfix patch has been focused on known and emerging issues from our PTU on ArcCorp. Our current patch notes are hosted on the PTU website and can be found here. Access to the PTU patch notes require a PTU account, and remember to use the Password that was sent by RSI via email after copying your account over!
Hangar Module:
Ships:
  • Fixed an issue where the pilot seat in the Constellation (all variants) could not be interacted with by characters.
User Interface
  • Fixed an issue where the scroll bars within the game menus would occasionally stop accepting input from the mouse scroll wheel.
  • Fixed an issue where the expandable menus in the Keybindings and Advanced Keybindings menu would sometimes appear blank.
  • Fixed an issue where some control options were missing from the main game menu.
Arena Commander Module:
Gameplay
  • Fixed an issue in the Tutorial, Chapter 4, where the interior/exterior of the Gladius would sometimes appear as damaged after taking off.
  • The chat UI can no longer be opened via F12 while a Hint is on-screen, preventing players from being stuck on the Hint.
Ships
  • Fixed an issue with the rockets on the Mustang Delta, where they would sometimes misfire, explode in the pod, or not detonate properly on hitting the target.
Social Module:
Gameplay
  • Characters can no longer enter prone via a console controller.
Character
  • Characters will no longer run out of sprint stamina in ArcCorp. This is temporary, not a permanent change.
Environment
  • Fixed an issue with some bottles in the G-Loc bar were clipping with other objects incorrectly.
  • Fixed a number of collision and clipping issues in and around the M50 displayed in Astro-Armada.
  • Fixed an issue of collision on either side of the Astro-Armada elevator that was allowing players to fall through the level.
  • Fixed an issue where the wall at the back of Dumpers Depot would disappear on low graphic settings.
  • Fixed an issue where the Casaba Outlet sign would say “Casada” and would be missing the word “Outlet” on low graphic settings.
User Interface
  • Fixed an issue where spamming F12 (open and close the chat UI) or F2 (Augmented Reality) would crash the game client.
  • Fixed an issue where the chat interface would stop updating and not scroll down when chat was receiving excessive inputs.

Watching some *highly illegal* videos of the social space, and the attention to detail is astounding. Puddle reflections, little trinkets in shops, the mood of the area as the locations get more dodgy etc etc. Really want to see how this will look at a space station with some planet or sun as a backdrop. The only discerning thing is the attack of the clones running around.

He's fucking nuts. I can't tell if the people in the comments truly agree with him or are just trying to egg him on.

You cannot just change your avatar like that man. You just can't. :D

And yeah, the deepend was about 600,000 km ago. DS is approaching the event horizon at this point.

A big portion of those are probably his own posts - both the supporting and opposing ones. He certainly has "no such thing as bad publicity" on lock. The /r/starcitizen subreddit even has a sticky thread about him, which means his name is one of the first things people see when visiting the sub.

From what I've seen there have been a fair amount of people confused about the development, some who are frustrated with it, and like one or 2 true believers. Maybe the thousands supporting him are all on reddit or twitter because I haven't seen that many.

Regardless though DS is only doing this for personal reasons, not accountability. One look at his blog will tell you he's nothing more than a raging forum poster that got banned.

EDIT: Also is there an NDA in place? or is it voluntary?

Purely for media(streaming, video, screenshots), people can discuss it all they want. Most of us doubt it will last until Friday which is supposed to be when the rest of the backers are supposed to get an invite to the PTU.

I got an invite to the PTU earlier for some reason. Are they just inviting random people to see the Social Module test?

Regardless, I'll try to download it when I get home from work. Pretty excited.

Weird, maybe they're not done that batch yet.

Maybe we didn't buy enough stuff? Or maybe we don't devote enough of our life to the game? Maybe you had to pray at least 10 times a day to Lord and Savior Chris Roberts?

How often am I supposed to dig the ceremonial vanduul dagger into my palm over a candle flame? 3 times a month?

If so, then it makes sense why they did not choose me.
Chris just doesnt like You. Yeah, i said it!
OH CR, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?!

I can say with confidence that that isn't the reason. ;P Even if it's buying enough stuff in the last 60 days... Damn wallet draining sales.

That said, I don't really care if I get an invite. Too many more gigs to download for the PTU.

You can apparently just copy your base folder over and then only download the main social module portion (13 gigs).
There is only one way to recover from this for You.
Sell the SC supporter pack and buy Line of Defense :)

Smart advice, there!
hehhehe
