You're all mine.

I agree with Scullibundo.
John Carter is one of the best adventure movies (Top Ten at the very least).

Yeah, John Carter was good. From a production perspective, there's plenty to criticize (many stuff in it was a HUGE waste of budget), but the actual final product is quite nice, even if the production team got what they had coming.

That's uhh.. quite a size difference.

That's an awesome poster. I'm going to see it opening night 5-17 wit a bunch of friends, looking very forward to it. But man, that black ship is HUGE....

All three of them are terrible. Not a conclusion based only and literally on RT scores but just a general indicator.

The only time these guys don't stink it up is when JJ is producing and most likely telling them what he wants.

The scary part is we might get these fuckers working on Star Wars to any extent.

No won't. We already know who the screenwriter is. Michael Ardnt wrote the script Abrams is directing based on a story outline Lucas wrote. Lucasfilm did not hire these guys.

1) The trailer shows zero story. Just action. The best trailers usually give SOME story, or the action is so mind-blowing that it makes up for it. That is not the case with any of the trailers we've seen for Into Darkness. While it looks technically capable, we've seen earth blow up in a thousand movies. Those shots aren't enough to get anyone truly excited.

Going by the trailers for Into Darkness some plot points seem to be VERY similar to the 2009 movie: Kirk's ability to lead is questioned, the villain has a giant space ship and he seems to possess some kind of weapon of mass destruction, Kirk has to save the day because the Starfleet is in disarray (okay, insted of a destroyed fleet there's an attack on the high command). I know there's sadly no place for an actual science-fiction story in blockbuster movies nowadays, but the trailers don't excite me at all. I was so excited for the 2009 movie, but I don't even know if I'll go see this one.

But I also stumpled upon a spoiler that sounded so completely dumb I'm almost eager to go see the movie just to know if the spoiler is true.

Bad Robot is coproducing. If Abrams wants some changes, it's possible he might go to them.

POSSIBLY MAJOR SPOILER:
The finale of Wrath of Khan is reversed and Kirk dies in the reactor chamber instead of Spock.
I don't know if it's true, I think I even read it here on Gaf. I didn't check if it's true.

Yeah, ENDING SPOILERS. I haven't seen the movie, but if you snoop around the internet enough it's pretty much confirmed.

I see, thanks! I kind of want to talk about why I think it's stupid, but I'll wait for the spoiler thread. I hope it won't be the trainwreck I expect and they pull it off.

ENDING SPOILERS (I've seen the film, so don't read if you want to - no rumors here):
I thought they pulled it off well. I found it just as sad as the "original" scene.

Absolutely loved the film.

Obviously the nuance in the film is the ultimate arbiter of whether it works or not, but from the detailed plot summary I've read, it's just plain stupid:

Having characters straight up cheat death is always stupid if it's not justified in a way beyond 'well we need them alive for a sequel'. That's what's brilliant about The Search for Spock, and why it doesn't shit on the impact of Wrath of Khan; sure, Spock's brought back, but only after, as Sarek points out, Kirk loses his career, his ship, and his own son. This wasn't a 'get out of jail free' card Spock redeemed; his return was earned. In my mind it's the single best example of bringing a character back The Right Way (even if TSFS as a movie had some issues.)

Maybe Into Darkness has some similar tradeoff but it more sounds like 'I remember what someone said earlier in the movie! Contrivance!' Not to mention where the fuck did Khan suddenly get Jesus blood?

It doesn't seem like they'll be attached. Lindelof said he was "too busy" or something when JJ was announced as the director. They have Arndt, Kasdan, and other people to work on the new films. I think JJ is aware enough that he needs fresh blood on SW.

Exactly. Plus people forget that Abrams started his career in hollywood as a screenwriter. So Star Wars has Michael Arndt, Simon Kinberg, JJ Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan already in the bullpen. Really no need to drag in Orci/Kurtzman on this.

Okay, so maybe not STiD related but definitely Star Trek related.

A while back one of my friends gave me a DS9 poster. At the beginning of April, I learned Tony Todd, who starred in one of my favorite shows of Star Trek – DS9's "The Visitor" – was coming to Wilmington. I set out to get an autograph, and I did! Really nice guy. He told me about how his aunt, who took care of him when he was younger, died about three months before the shoot of this show. He was really, really depressed about her passing until he was given the script, and he channeled his feelings for his aunt into his performance.

The writing is a quote from the episode. It says: "To Zoey – It's life...you're gonna miss it if you don't open your eyes."

There is some doubt among Starfleet as to Kirk being a captain, as you will see.

And the big ship is explained - it's not controlled by a crew of 1, but is designed to be operated by a skeleton crew. It's a
Dreadnought class warship
.

SPOILER: It's not
Cumberland's ship at all.

They really need to stop making ships that run on skeleton crews, they always run into trouble.

Well, that clip pretty much says for a fact who Cumberbatch is playing. Anyone who doesn't want to be spoiled, don't watch this clip!!!

Man, this movie can't come out soon enough!!!

Yeah, lol. Any fan worth their salt is gonna' pick up the reference immediately.

Thats amazing =)

So on the subject of Cumberbatch's character, probable real spoilers here, ...
The whitewashing doesn't help either. I mean really. Would it have been so hard.

Do they try to explain that in the universe? Because it seems to me that,
since Khan was created before the timelines split, he should be the exact same guy in this universe as in the original. Of course, I don't mean played by the same actor, but his ethnicity and backstory should be unchanged.

Well I mean,
it's not like he's really supposed to be hispanic either. If they had a rebooted Picard played by an actual frenchman I wouldn't consider that a breach of canon. It just seems like such a wasted opportunity to do the right thing now that Hollywood has a more diverse talent pool to draw on (even if it could be more diverse yet).

One of the interesting theories I saw last year was that
del Toro would end up being in the movie as Khan, and Cumberbatch's Harrison would be working with him. That is, the news about del Toro dropping out was a misdirect.
. Of course it wasn't true.

John Carter was not a blockbuster.

block·bust·er . n. 1. Something, such as a film or book, that sustains widespread popularity and achieves enormous sales.

That's why I did the shaq.gif

Blockbuster has also come to describe a genre of film that aspires to achieve those things (big budget genre films mostly released in the summer). Much like pop derives from popular but also describes a somewhat shifting genre of music.

how did pegg get so obnoxious so quickly

The guy basically achieved everything he could have ever dreamed of and then some, and has had smoke blown up his arse by the geek community for over a decade. He's now effectively one of *the* poster boys for that part of pop-culturedom.

It's pretty easy to see how someone could disappear up themselves in that scenario, although I agree it is a shame.
