Anything that makes a large part of GAF flail around in teenage angst, like the lead up to AoU last year, is something I'll support. I loved every bit of it.

Also, of course the MCU money train will keep running. There's 50yrs of comic stories for Disney to use.

So will they pass the baton to a new captain America, Thor, iron man ect when they wanna be done with it or retire those characters?

Well it depends on what direction they go in, for me at least.

If it's something like Iron Man 10, Thor 8, Guardians 4, (etc...) and not much else, then I'd be miffed. But if it's all on the opposite spectrum though, that's not that great either.

I'd prefer it if they were to continue the way they're doing it now. A mix of continuations, new adaptations, some team-ups on a smaller scale (Comparatively against Phase 3's buildup anyway) and maybe even some one-off films or acquisitions?

As for Star Wars, it's inevitable. I do hope we move away from Skywalker family and friends when we get to episode X and above. Don't leave the books with all the EU fun.

So long as they start doing interesting things with the universes then I'm all for it.
If however, all the movies feel the same, then this is going to get stale real quick.

Hopefully Disney/Marvel/Lucasfilm are willing to take risks with their stories.

Marvel movies will not continue on forever, and for Disney to think that their franchise has enough steam to continue on for that long is laughable. Eventually they will make a few missteps or continue to play it too safe in terms of how the film's play out and people will get tired of the MCU. Most people just want to see this Infinity Wars plot play out which hooked people back when Avengers 1 released. The novelty will wear off eventually.

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
'My name is [Bob Iger], king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away."

Just like people got tired of virtually interchangeable summer action blockbusters

Star Wars can be great forever as long as th3y manage the IP well and get great talent all around. But it will probably bottom out at some point. I think the Marvel CE will burn out sooner but that's just because I've lost interest and find them to be too formulaic at this point.

In a world where The Simpsons is on season 23, the Big Bang Theory is on season 10, we've had 23 James Bond films, and three of the best selling games series are the annual Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, and Madden, you guys *really* want to tell me that people are going to get tired of Marvel and Star Wars? REALLY?

I seriously doubt that when Downey walks away from the MCU, likely after the Infinity Wars films, that Marvel will just 'retire' Iron Man for good.

Iron Man is a huge part of the MCU and there's no way that the character 'dies' when Downey leaves.

People have grown infamously tired of The Simpsons and most long time fans pray for its cancellation.

the Big Bang Theory is on season 10

The tenth season is reported to be The Big Bang Theory's last.

Three of the most well known franchises in the gaming medium that are most associated with franchise fatigue.

you guys *really* want to tell me that people are going to get tired of Marvel and Star Wars?

Yes.

I can't wait for when I'm 80, sat in a cinema watching Avengers 32.

That'l be a hard one to recast - unless they make it Tony's son or something that he didn't even know he had? Or if they introduce another universe and a new Tony comes through or something. I imagine they could even promote War Machine to Iron Man status for a while as he has been IM in the comics over a period of time once or twice.

Does the Marvel Universe from the comics have the equivalent of a Lazarus Pit or regeneration or something that could Marvel help keep the continuity with an inevitable recast?

"I'm young Tony Stark now! Guess I'd better go back to high school! Enjoy a scene where I humiliate my teacher in metalwork class when I build my new suit in the classroom with a box of scraps! Happy Hogan has to pretend to be my Dad? JARVIS is taking me to the prom? Shenanigans!"

Even more ? Half the trailers before Star Wars was Marvel this or Marvel that.

And the only one worth watching was Ant-man because it ridiculed other Marvel heroes.

Between Marvel & Star Wars, Disney has my wallet by the balls.

Don't forget Pixar and the Muppets (unless you are one of those heartless monsters who hates the muppets) and Indiana Jones.

That's an interesting way to be wrong. You should look up the term "vocal minority".

I got bored of the MCU in 2010. I'm looking forward for the rest of the world to get on my level.

So you got bored of the MCU well before all its best films came out?

Got it.

He's the comic book movie hipster.

Nothing says "vocal minority" quite like facts. Then again, I'm arguing against someone who's literally arguing that every franchise will last forever, definitely for always.

EDIT: Jesus, I'm grumpy today.

I was referring to the two franchises mentioned in this thread. But yeah, don't forget about those three. And even beyond Disney, WB has me by the balls as far as DC's slate of films go.

It got tired by Iron Man 2.

Not that I haven't seen The Avengers 1 and Guardians of the Galaxy. The Avengers had some decent jokes, but I was left feeling unfulfilled by the end of it. Guardians had mediocre humour, and predictable action. I regret wasting my time on that one. I only did it because all my friends were saying how it stood above so much else in the MCU.

The first Captain America was actually pretty good all around. A rare exception that doesn't excuse an annual release schedules up until 2019 at least.

You should also look up "fact" while you're at it.
God dammit you better make a Star Wars movie about the KOTOR era then.

I want an EU remix. Do Revan and Bane but switch it up. Hell, Kylo Ren is an amalgam of EU concepts, so why not?

I think as long as they keep switching up the genres, even within the same IP, it should help to keep things fresh for the foreseeable future. For example, Captain America the first avenger was a period piece, whereas Winter soldier was a modern topical spy thriller and hype is massive for the upcoming Civil War. Thor was a fantasy epic, where as the Dark world had a lot of sci-fi elements to it. Guardians was a sci-fi comedic action film, Ant-man was a comedy-action heist film. As long as they do this, I think they'll be ok. Tons of characters have yet to make it to the big screen. Plus at some point, I have to imagine that the X-men film rights will find their way into Marvel's hands, which will open up even more story possibilities and IP crossovers. Avengers vs Xmen?

I think you can look to Ant-Man for how they will pass the torch. I expect RDJ to be involved in the MCU until he is in his late 60s at the least. He'll become a mentor character so we'll get the Tony Stark dialogue but someone much younger will take on the suit.

I like what they've done with Marvel and Star Wars is off to a strong start. I never thought I'd get to see Episodes X, XI and XII in my lifetime but looks like that won't be an issue.

No they haven't. If they had it wouldn't keep getting renewed. Fox isn't paying these people for some legacy bragging. People still watch it.

And I'm one of the longtime fans that prays for its cancellation.

The MCU is fun and all, but I feel like the shared universe thing just hinders what great potential there is for a lot of characters. It'll probably only get worse as it goes along unless they really shake things up by hugely diversifying their films.

it makes sense. As long as it keeps on making money, why would they stop?

I don't really like the movies as much as some people but I can appreciate them. But as long as they entertain people there's worth in them.
