Maybe with VGA Keighley Awards Show critics who feel the need to have a niche game represent but overall, I think gamers will choose starfield over high fi rush just like they did in 2019 which was actually a very strong year with several amazing single player titles like RE2, Sekiro, DMCV, Control, Jedi Fallen Order and Disco Ellysium.

I do agree with that BG3 launching when it did completely killed Starfield's chances of reviewing well. I wouldnt be surprised if that developer outrage on twitter over BG3 was mostly disgruntled starfield devs lol.

I think it will go something like this:

BG3
ToTK
Starfield
Spiderman 2
RE4
Star Wars

Lets bookmark this post and get back to this next year.

I wonder if the delay helped or hurt it in that perspective.

Would it have been better to launch last year with a buggy game and ultimately improve it over the course of the year or be in the shadow of Baldur's Gate?

I mean it's hindsight at this point, they couldn't have known the game was going to get this much praise right before they launched and I actually think if Starfield wasn't tied to Xbox and GamePass it would have been delayed for another 6-12 months.

Ultimately, Bethesda isn't showing that they're worth 7.5 billion dollars or anywhere close to that. As it stands today, it'll be one of the worst purchases in gaming history. And before anyone says that I'm console-warring, the Bungie buy might end up in that conversation too at this point, but maybe Microsoft should have let the ink dry on their Bethesda deal before going after Activision Blizzard.

Bethesda is a solid purchase but I'm not so sure about ATVI, they are 100% overpaying there.
I'm not sure about that anymore. Microsoft did not buy Bethesda for Hi-Fi Rush or Redfall. They bought it for Starfield, and even their best MVP title hasn't produced the results that most folks were expecting.

$7.5 billion is too much for mid-results. Compare that to a studio like Respawn for $315 million or Insomniac for $229 million, and you'll notice a huge gulf in bang for the buck.

They purchased the Elder Scrolls and Fallout if you ask me. Both of which will see big mainline releases in the coming years. M$ has a longer time horizon than just startfield.

How many 90+ titles did insomniac produce?

No way starfield get a third place over re4 remake or sf6.

Lol at star wars or spidey even being in contention...

How many 90+ titles did Bethesda produce since the acquisition? lol.

The point is, how many copies did Insomniac sell after the acquisition, especially in the context of their acquisition costs? The ROI with studios like Insomniac and Respawn is insane!

Starfield sold ~70K copies at launch in the UK, while Fallout 4 sold half a million.

They released the game during a glut of really good games. Baldurs gate 3 for example selling like absolute gangbusters, definitely took a hit from Starfield sales. People don't have money for two £80 games right now, life costs a lot of money in the UK.

I agree, but that's just the cut-throat nature of this industry, right? You don't always get an open field to play with. Horizon Zero Dawn launched alongside Zelda BOTW! It still sold ~23 million copies and nearly 3 million copies in two weeks.

Spider-Man 2 will launch in a packed October, but I'm pretty confident that it will also end up selling 15-20+ million copies despite that.

But regardless, these things happen, but my point is that the hefty cost of Zenimax acquisition (which was primarily for Starfield) will sting all the more because of this performance.

We shall see. Re4 remake is obviously the better game but it is literally a remake of a ps2 game that is safe and very familiar.

Star Wars reviewed very well and was the first gene this years to get goty praise. Re4 came out Before that and didn’t get any goty talk from critics.

Spidey was third in 2018 behind reed dead and gow in goty wars. Very few compared to the other two but it won awards. This year it will win goty awards from all ps centric sites just like starfield and zelda will with Xbox and Nintendo sites.

I'm kind of surprised to see review scores drifting down considering the consensus is this is a slow burn game that gets better with time.

My wife hated this game for like a week but now she's obsessed with it.

Game hype aside, 84/87 is still a great review score. As much time as I've put in the game I can't say I disagree with it when taking into consideration the performance problems.

Remarkable there has not been a single patch for this game since it released in early access. Nothing for two nearly two weeks. WTF, Bethesda?

This game probably would have done a little better if it came out last year. This year...there were too many other good games that feel more "next gen." This just kinda sticks out more as being stuck in 2013.

There are some great things this game does, it just gets over shadowed with how clunky and disconnected it all feels. Clunk I can handle...but the disconnectedness of it truly hurts it.
If it came last year, it would have been the most broken Bethesda game launch in history. The game didn't work on Intel GPUs (did they fix this?) and on Nvidia it runs pretty badly (though this could be a bad job on Nvidia's part).

I imagine a hot fix could create a lot of new bugs for a game this size. They probably want to be careful.

Next thing I'm hoping for is a big Post Honeymoon period whiplash for people who defended and loved Starfield. It's not that I'm wishing ill will on the game, it's fans, on Xbox, or any of that. I sunk so many hours into Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, and Fallout 4 (yes I love that game, eat a dick), because I loved Bethesda RPGs so much. But they need to evolve and they need to do better.

If the 20 year wait for the The Elder Scrolls VI amounts to "Skyrim, but with better graphics!" that would be such a letdown and slap in the face. To see the same Creative Engine jankiness, same load screens every minute, same outdated physics, same bugs, same NPC behavior, etc etc. Bethesda needs to get the message that their approach to game design is an old dog performing the same old tricks.

This is actually why it's getting those reviews... We are all pushing forward while the game is annoying and boring because we have fate in Bethesda and we hear people saying "later on it becomes good" but the problem is: the boring and the annoying part we played doesn't vanish. I'm playing the game and some times when I turn off the Xbox I can't wait to return to it... but sometimes I actually need to "force" my self to play at it again hoping in a "good run". It's a good game but 80 fits perfectly as a score.

I am guessing a lot of people will get around to enjoying it more. Especially people who tried to play it like older Bethesda titles.

Game has some survival game elements, some animal crossing elements, outside of usual Bethesda style role playing.

There is a high possibility you will be disappointed if you approach content in any other way than what developers intended.

These types of games, they grow on you more you play. Once you are comfortable in that game world.

Today my launcher got stuck on "checking for game updates" so I thought a new update was coming, but no.

Perhaps a good excuse...but if they got it running better last year...I do think it would have done better.

Neither Respawn nor Insomniac own an IP in the same league (sales-potential-wise) as Elder Scrolls or Fallout. SpiderMan is not an IP owned by Insomniac, it's simply licensed by Sony. This is the main reason the Zenimax purchase was magnitudes more expensive. Not to mention you are not mentioning that Microsoft acquired more than just one development studio with this acquisition.
