Speaking of which I find it weird that people are willing to pay extra just to have games on steam lol.
I might do that sometimes or double dip on a game I already have occasionally but to be exclusive to Steam? That's worth a chuckle or two.

EA is doing what Valve did all those years ago. The only difference is that Origin now is better than Steam was back then.

What Valve did all those years ago is create a store from scratch to fill a need no one even knew existed yet. Given that they had nothing to model themselves after, the early shakiness was not only excusable but inevitable. Steam exists now. Comparing Origin now to Steam then is not a fair comparison, and the only reason people make it is because they know there's no contest between Origin and Steam now. What else gets compared this way? Oh, this MMO doesn't suck, it's a lot like early Everquest. Oh, this driving game doesn't suck, it's a lot like early Atari. Oh, this car doesn't suck, it's a lot like early Model Ts.

Also, EA is a fickle, short-term-profit-driven company. Origin is going to fail. Everyone knows it. Even if it is profitable it won't be profitable enough, and EA is going to throw it under the bus some quarter to appease stockholders. EA forcing people to tie their games to a shitty doomed service is not doing their reputation any favors.

Yeah I've noticed some people won't even buy a game even at free with stuff like the Amazon coupons since it's not on steam.

So to get away from the useless Origin/Steam debate that seems to have flooded in to the 2012 thread, was there any indication that the master server/server lists were on the fritz at some point this weekend?

I dropped into a mod to test it out with a friend of mine, it crashed, and my server lists for every game was dead for a day or so. Wondered if it was the mod or steam itself.

I'll probably get ME3 retail on sale and activate on Origin, assuming it gets stellar reviews. Otherwise, I'll just pass.

Prison Tycoon is an actual game... the fuck. Why?

Why not? There are prison tycoons in the real America, since much of the prisons in use are privately owned businesses.

Ever wonder why so many Americans are in jail? There is an industry that profits from it, so they lobby the government to pass laws and set policies putting more people in jail.

I meant why would anyone want to play a game about it...

Do they have Forced Labor Camp tycoon?

I love the concept, it's a perfect fit for the simulation genre. I've played Prison Tycoon 2, though, and it's pretty terrible. I'd love to see a decent developer take a shot at something like that.

Coming soon from rocksteady: Arkham Tycoon.

Frustrated with the shitty security, batman takes up the administration of arkham asylum himself.

The same reason people find running any kind of business fun in a tycoon/sim game, micromanagement is entertaining.
As far as I know, there isn't a Forced Labour Camp Tycoon, but I haven't made regular visits to North Korea's development community.

Well, I often do that, because I can afford to do so. Not every time, but when I make exceptions, the games have to be DRM free - Humble Bundles, The Witcher 2, Gray Matter, etc.

I really don´t think it´s that weird to pay a little bit extra to get the product on a service that you´re comfortable with. If you just see Steam as a download service, then I might understand your view, but I see it as something more.

I enjoy the benefits of steam and if theres a good reason to go steam I will but if really the only difference is the timer or something then I usually go with whoever has the cheapest price. Also helps now other retailers are having deeper discounts than steam will ever have.

It depends. If the game is on Steam, then it will reach that price eventually. Good example is Batman: Arkham City. It was on sale at half off on Origin just two days after it came out. Some posters were ridiculed for saying they'd pass for the Steam version, but sure enough, it ended up at that same price a month later during the holiday sale. The benefits of owning a game on Steam are obvious, so it's no shock that some people are willing to wait it out just to own it there. We have enough games to play until then.

Kinda sucks that some of my favorite sim/tycoon games aren't on Steam. Most are even just borderline Facebook games as opposed to the deep ones.

Beach Life is a great resort tycoon by Eidos, but definitely unheard.
Zoo Tycoon 1 and 2 are a miss. With the recent appearance of Age of Empires III in Steam it makes me wonder if ZT will make it.
Theme Hospital is a much accepted entry over Hospital Tycoon.
SimGolf, goodness... SimGolf.

Haha, Beach Life is a fun game. Cheaply made and not very deep, also not enough items you can put in your park, but it's got a nice campaign mode and the soundtrack is great for the atmosphere they're going for.

Games like Arkham City I think it's worth getting the steam version due to cloud, steam patching, dlc sales etc. Otherwise Amazon and other retailers are stepping up and having deeper discounts that steam will likely never hit since they rarely go past a 75% off discount. Also helps that plenty of games are steamworks and I kinda like having Origin just because it DLs and installs the game for u rather than having to DL the exe and other files then installing it. I also just launch everything through steam anyway.

I really think it's quite sad that some people in this thread will not buy ME3 because it's Origin only. EA is doing what Valve did all those years ago. The only difference is that Origin now is better than Steam was back then.

I don't understand denying yourself a game you'll enjoy because it doesn't have the DRM you want it to have.

The funny thing EA have been in DD client business since 2005, you would think 7 years would be enough for a company to get it together. If your really considering year by year progress, Steam pretty much still has the upper hand.

In all honesty the only way you would get me running Origin if Mirrors Edge 2 was released only for Origin.

People do the same thing with steamworks. I'm not going to buy it simply because it is going to be on origin only, that's part of the problem. Its the fact that i own ME1 and ME2 on steam already and want to play EA's game of snubbing steam and trying to promote their own platform.

The industry is just now starting to take DD seriously, I think. Valve was insane in their prophecizing when they took on Steam.

-Sonic CD is coming "very soon" according to The Taxman (creator of the Retro Engine).

-Sonic Generations - Casino Night Pinball DLC is coming this week according to Amazon. It'll be out on January 19th for $1.59.

I guess we'll see what happens this week. Maybe we'll also get Sonic 4. =\

The difference between what Origin is and what Steam was is that There wasn't an alternative to Steam that trumped it in almost every way. And in terms of DRM, yeah it sucks but if I have to take it, I might as well take it in the place I like.

I'd rather have all my stuff in one place, otherwise I'll end up buying games twice.

This is ultimately how I am. I'll buy elsewhere if it's incredibly cheap or if the game is just not on Steam. But if it ever comes to Steam, or the price ever goes down very low, I'll re-buy it to have on there.

It's not that hard to keep track of, really. I bought games from Direct2Drive, Impulse/GameStop, Gamersgate, GOG, Green Man Gaming, GetGames, various Indie Bundles (not all of which offer steam keys) and of course Steam. I only screwed up once with the original Stalker, which I bought from both Gamersgate and Impulse.

I can't even keep track of my shit on Steam.

"According to our records, you already own some of the above items on Steam. You can purchase these items as a gift or adjust the contents of your cart to continue."

This has happened many times.

High five!...*sad face*

Yeah I have no qualms about shopping at other DD shops, but if the game isn't steamworks it really gives me pause and I'll usually pass. Not that there's anything wrong with non steam games, but my backlog and dota 2 addiction has rendered the incremental value of a new game and the "need" to purchase new games near moot. hahaha

Tiny Bang Story is the steam daily @ 75% off ($2.49). It's a short but neat puzzle game, definitely recommend it at that price.

It's not so much avoiding multiple purchases, although that's a concern too. It's also about stuff like--sometimes I don't know what to play so I just look at my list. If I have to go rooting around to find games, they won't be considered there. I only want to run one client, so I have no desire to buy things on something else with a client. I don't want too many companies to have my credit card (in fact, I use Paypal on Steam so even Valve doesn't have my info). When I format, I want to be able to redownload easily instead of remembering to go back to the other sites and redownloading.

As of right now I have an awkward "DRM-free indie game installers" folder on my computer from Indie Bundles having stuff. But from that GetGamesGo bundle some of them have DRM so some of those installers might not work.

And any perceived price benefit is phony; a game that goes on sale for $19 on D2D or Impulse will go on sale for $19 or less on Steam. Maybe not at the same time. Maybe not in the same sale. But if you're like most of us and you treat Steam like a "buffet" in that rather than actively intending to purchase X, Y, and Z you more see what comes down to the pipe and purchase as stuff gets cheap/appealing enough, having to wait for a spring sale for Steam to match the price from the winter sale on D2D or whatever is not a big deal.

Personally I also own all the consoles and I'm not really picky about control or graphical fidelity so if it's a game like ME3 which is Origin-works on PC, I'll just get the 360 version. It being Origin-works means I have no faith the DLC will ever go on sale, especially considering ME2's situation, so there's no price advantage to buying on PC versus on console.

That's basically how I feel regarding different DD platforms, but in the case of ME3, I suppose I'll get it on Origin.

After the ME2 DLC crap I experienced, I want to make sure I play the game without any DLC whatsoever this time around. I couldn't resume my game because it couldn't connect to the EA servers and "athenticate" my DLC. If you play with DLC, you're basically enabling on-startup DRM every time you want to play the game. Play without DLC and you don't need to worry about that.

This. Except for me it's not "sometimes", it's "all the time". I open up my list of games on Steam, find one I like, install and play.
I never know ahead of time what I'm going to pick, and I sure as heck don't want to log into several different accounts just to see which games I can download.

Hmm, wonder if we'll see a Sonic Generations sale to go along with the DLC. I regret not picking it up while it was on sale.

First of all, Origin isn't competing with Steam as it was back then. It's competing with Steam the way it is now.

Second, Origin isn't new. It's just a new name for the EA Download Manager software, which has been around for years. (When Origin "launched" it literally just updated the EADM client to say "Origin Beta" with no other changes.) EA has had plenty of time to get their act together.

It's not just about DRM. It's about the features and account terms that these services have, and the trust you have in the companies that run them, and EA lags far behind.
