Steam Controller overview and videos/impressions

I noticed some people just don't seem to know this. It's kind of poor marketing in a way (even though there really isn't much to go on). I recall one of the guys from LinusTechTips doing a vid on the controller and then in the podcast later discussing it, both times seemingly oblivious to the fact it could be flicked and had momentum or weight.

Yeah, Valve could do a better job demoing some of its features and just showing it off. They have that one trailer and the store page with lots of info, but it's obvious even reading this site, that people are still uninformed. And then we have the features Valve haven't talked about or expanded upon. Like trackball mode's flicking or mode shifting etc

I imagine its launch is going to be rough partly thanks to letting people at it without any guidance. And I doubt the press is going to be more thorough.

So how big is the wireless range on this thing? Mostly want to use it so I can play my computer on the big screen, and I would be sitting about 8 feet away from my computer, which would be on the other side of a wall.

Really excited either way, can't wait to try out a ton of different games.

Trial's first video mentioned the grip and touchpad's micro switches also being hard to click. That killed most of my interest in this thing. I hope they do a revision down the line where all of those are as easy to press as a click on a mouse.

The bumpers are the shoulder buttons. The grips (the buttons at the back) are apparently hard to click at the top of the grips (ie nearer to the shoulder buttons), but are easier to press at the lower end of the grips. Only the Valvetime folks seem to have mentioned issues with the shoulder buttons. They certainly do look clunky for shoulder buttons compared to pictures of other controllers. They almost look like triggers

Does anybody else think that Alienware will have to drop the form factor of the next Alpha/Steam machine if and when they want to make a more powerful machine?

Everything in the machine is made to reduce heat. T-processors, so-dimm memory.

I am thinking the next model might support the graphics amplifier (Alphas/Steam Machines are just laptops in a console form factor) if they want to keep the form factor. Otherwise they surely will have to go bigger.

No, I don't. HBM should allow next generation GPUs to be much more powerful on a dedicated board made for games, without taking up too much space for the mobile form factor. Pascal could change everything here. Too bad it didn't launch this year.

I think someone said 5m but I may be off.

5m, which is over 16ft

Alright, so here's some pics of the contents of the controller package I received.

Edit:
Can't directly link from Google Drive it seems. My bad.

Others also had that problem, haha.

Anyways, for those who haven't seen the stream, he said he's going to do non-Steam games and emulators too. So, C&C, Diablo, Metroid Prime etc. But the stream was a pretty good overview, so check it out.

Should be soon i'm sure like everyone else I got an email from valve to verify shipping address by sep 25.

I actually haven't played any of my steam games in two or three months. Also very excited to finally play from my bed.

So that video was made on the day after I had it. I've put at least ten hours into the controller at this point, and the grips are a lot less difficult to use than I first thought. They are still slightly harder than the first version, but for what it's worth, I no longer see that as a real issue.

Will you be able to buy it in retail stores, or only from the steam website? Shipping to europe is expensive. :(

Yes but only select stores depending on where you live. In the UK, GAME are the only ones stocking it. They also force you to get a minimum £20 wallet funds at the same time, but this still works out more cost effective than the postage fees if you buy direct through Steam. GAME also provide free delivery or collection in store if you order online.

Is the only way to customize controls through BPM? That could be a problem as I usually don't use BPM as it incurs heavy frame rate drops for me when it's on.

Got my confirmation mail too. I got a shipping number, but no company name. Feels like buying on ebay from an unknown seller, lol. After fiddling around and trying to discover the shipping company based on the number, it seems to be GLS. No to see when it actually comes. The estimated date, October 16th seems way too pessimistic, I get stuff from China faster than that.

Mine says "shipping status: error" for the link and the controller. Estimated shipping date of 16th October (supposed to be the delivery date, no?)

Time to mail Valve support I guess.

Are you both in the states. ?

I'm in Austria.

Strange, I placed two orders, one when preorders went live with a controller and link and another one with a single controller. The single controller shipment was confirmed but my other order just says shipping state: error. I'll give it a bit of time to see if it's going to change.

Shipped! There's no estimated delivery on mine, just an "estimated shipping date":

Shipping Status: Shipped
Estimated Shipping Date: 16 Oct, 2015
Shipped on 28 Sep, 2015

Looks like it'll be a couple of weeks early then?

Huh. Nothing for me yet. I guess I'm in the next day or two. Oh well, time to console myself with

Now I eagerly await an email.

I'll be mad if it turns out they are shipping to all the other countries first so that they all arrive at the same time.

This is most likely the case. It seems most people who have "shipped status" are out the US. Seems Valve is taking care of the UK first.
They never promised anything other than the 16th.

Ordered mine at Jun 4, 2015 @ 10:04am according to Steam, no shipment confirmation yet.

If you live in the US or somewhere close by, it doesn't sound like you would get any shipping confirmation yet. Europe is getting them now due to the length of time it takes to get there.

Do you guys think Valve is going to send the press HW to review them (this also includes the Link)? A bit more than two weeks till "early birds" ship, I haven't seen anyone from the press mention they got any.
