There are plenty that don't need CC info.

Age of conan, wow , lotro (p2p obviously), runescape, age of conan...

Also why wouldn't he spend 10 euros to try it for a month?
I know mmos are trash, but if a game isn't worth playing for a month and then moving on,it's it's not worth playing at all. (as in if you can't enjoy it during that time).
Rift is an exceptionally bad mmo though, op should have read up first or tried the trial.

LOL, I love when people repeat examples to pad their list. Everyone is just saying that it is a common enough practice that you should be aware of it. You being able to rhyme off a few of them off of the top of your head would suggest to me that you are well aware of the practice and it was your lack of due diligence that caused you to lose $10 since you refuse to give them your Credit Card.

My main point wasn't that he didn't mess up by not reading the game didn't come with game time as much as no company should ever sell an MMO without gametime. You are literally buying a product for $10 that you cannot use without spending another $15. Even then, when he tried to login to see if they gave him 7 days trial before the game time started they automatically billed him the $15 just for logging in. No confirmation or anything. I think it's a little shitty. Obviously you guys don't mind stuff like that, but for me it's a bad business practice.

It really isn't a bad business practice though. It you read, it will be clear that you not only need to purchase the base game, but you also need to purchase a subscription. Had your friend read, instead of making assumptions (assumptions that you also make), he would have realized that he would get the base game on a very good sale, but would also need to pay the first month of the subscription, making the game roughly 25 dollars to play for the first month.

When they do offer a free month, it is just another sale, one in which you get 15 dollars off. No different. Reading is the key. So seriously, he did mess up by not reading, and that was the only problem there.

I bought Rift for $39.99 and I enjoyed it. They didn't wrong me in anyway and I encouraged my friend to buy it. I just don't think any MMO should ever be sold without game time. Especially when they sell other versions that do include game time.

Edit: You're completely misrepresenting the facts. They don't just 'include game time' as part of a sale. The game had ALWAYS been sold with game time included and then starting during the Father's day sale they stopped and sold it for $9.99. I'm not disputing that he should have read it didn't include game time. What I am disputing is that it's a bad practice to sell an MMO without game time. It's bordering very close to bait and switch.

So because it's a commonly used practice it can't be shitty?

You really think that hoarding credit card info for no reason is a good practice? Fuck some people are delusional.

edit: saw steam picture above: guess the whole argument is irrelevant then.

Half of those are free to play, the others have Trials that you can use to try out the game without entering any CC info.

Hey wait, Rift has a 7 day trial that you can use to try out the game without entering an CC info! That's like, exactly what you (the other guy, whatever) should have done. Instead of buying the game... cause if you buy WoW and want to use it for a month, you have to enter your CC info.

I *think* I'm going to grab Company of Heroes

Worth grabbing either Opposing Fronts or Tales of Valor?

Seriously doubt I'd ever play them online, so intrested in single player campaigns only.

Companies can do no wrong if they warned you from beforehand!

This has been asked a lot, I've seen that you should buy Opposing Frosts even just for single player. I have no personal experience though.

Also judging by metacritic that seems to make sense.

So just to confirm, with company of heroes: tales of valor. Thats the only version needed for MP right? I mean it has access to all the other factions and gamemodes right?

It isn't shitty to think that you'll need to provide a Credit Card or a game time card to activate an account for a subscription based service.

I can tell you right now that they'd get more complaints from people wondering why their service was interrupted after their free trial period was over than they would from people who are too lazy to read the big bold letters stating a credit card is required.

Ok, I'm out that's some borderline delusional shit right there.

Well, yeah. If they warned you, it's your own fault.
Hi, admitted my mistake and that it's my own my fault. I call out companies for shitty policies all the time. You where probably jumping for joy when they introduced online passes in games, but hey I can't call them out on it, because they warned me!

Nope, it is called the realities of business and customer service. You would have a much higher rate of people calling in asking why they can't log in than you would have people calling in complaining they need to use a credit card after it was clearly labeled that one was required.

And you like to make shit up based on nothing? Honestly where are you basing this on? Next to your fantasies.

Guys, stop peeing on each other.

And no, this doesn't mean "you get one more reply to clue off the discussion because it's not fair that I don't get to reply to him". Stop now. If you've made the mistake of replying before seeing my post, just edit your post out entirely and we'll move on.

I played the beta of Rift and it just felt like a rougher WoW, and I don't need another MMO like WoW to suck me into never leaving the house so I ended up deciding that it stunk and to not buy the game .

Also got burned on Aion and never went back there either.

It's a good idea for me to avoid mmos at this point I think.

This sale hasn't been as rough on me as I expected. I've grabbed a couple of bits here & there, only just exceeded the £100 I was happy to spend and I find it unlikely I'll be spending too much more.

Got a nice backlog out of it (including the timeless classic, Duke Nukem Forever). Should last me until the Xmas sale, at least :)

Moving on...

Bought two copoes of Sanctum - one for me, one for my brother. Can't wait to try it out.

I bought a 4 pack and played with a buddy last night. I actually really, really enjoyed it. We only played 1 game, but it was pretty awesome I must say. I loved the presentation and thought it was a steal for what they were asking.

I, of course, already own Counter-Strike: Source but if I buy it again for my account will I it be counted as one that I'm able to gift to someone else?

Edit: Just read the guidelines for what would be an extra copy, apparently Source is not part of it.

I think until something else comes out that is different enough from WoW there will be a lot of people burned out on MMOs (me included). I am looking forward to SWTOR, but I have honestly not been reading up on it at all so I am not sure if it is truly unique or just WoW in space.

Same here, 6 months of wow was enough to make me stay clear from MMOs (still tried EVE though, but the spreadsheet gots to me)

Personally the only one I'm looking forward to is Guild Wars 2

It's so tempting though... drawing me in. Only 10 dollars...

Yes, I think I need to avoid all MMOs.

Except for TF2.

I watched a video of it and it looks like you place towers by physically moving over to the area and placing it. Does it have a tactical view that you can place towers in and then switch to the FP view for shooting? Or is it all FP? I don't think I would enjoy it if it was all FP.

A.R.E.S is really good once you pass the first area, in the demo it didn't give you much but from stage 2 you unlock a ton more stuff and the level is much bigger, really nice game.

It does have a tactical overhead view that shows the ranges of the towers, but you can't place them from there. The way it works though is you have to build large 3D blocks and then you build the towers on them. Basically you build your 'maze' and then add your turrets. Also the rounds start when you tell them to, they aren't on a timer, so it really wasn't a problem because you had plenty of time to make sure you were building in the right place.

There's an above view but you place them in first person, it's not as disorienting as it would seem. And the teleporting is just plain fun for some odd reason.

It has an overhead view you can use to move around the map quickly, but you still seem to only place towers from first person view. Don't think the mechanic will hurt your enjoyment though.

Arma 2 is free on Green Man Gaming!

Just use the code THESU-NFREE-ARMA2 here

site is getting hammered though

It can't be redeemed on steam.

I've heard it's WoW in space with a story that's more intertwined into the game.

I agree with you though that something very different from WoW will be what overtakes WoW. Whether it has a different, already established user base (SW:TOR) or a different business model (Guild Wars 2), I think the only way to overtake WoW is to not try to copy it.

God, I hope the Mafia 2 DLC goes on sale, too! I loved that game! I bought it off Amazon for about $9 a while since it activates on Steam, so I wasn't about to pay $20 for the DLC. I really, really liked Mafia 2 though.

I thought it was a little disorienting, because when you teleport, you appear on the other side looking down, so you'll have to look around to get your bearings. I agree though, it didn't make it any less fun, and you get used to it pretty quick.

What time does the store update? the timer is borked for me.
Also how much longer will the sales last?

Kind of tempted to get napoleon total war, but then again I really really couldn't get into the shogun demo.
