I love that Steam sales actually have a (minor) backlash, now. Never seen that, before! You can get he first five GTA Games for $7.50 today, and yet the response is still meh for some of you, somehow.

I mean, if you have a Steam library of 200+ and have already picked up The Usual Suspects (Valve pack, id pack) then I get it. Although, eve then, what did you think was going to happen? Brand new games were suddenly going to materialize?

I've burned myself already. Bought bit.trip.runner, played it for 5 levels, uninstalled it. Doubt I'm going to break the 20 euro barrier this time around, since there's not much I really, really want.

Bought one game so far, Dawn of War II; Retribution, and have played it for an 1.5 hours. :)

Also played 1h of TF2 and AaaaAaAaa for the tickets.

Wish I could see progress for the Dawn of War II ticket.

Dawn of War II ticket is easy to get. Play last stand coliseum map with the general and equip the flamer. You get the achievement within 5 minutes.

Sorry for going off topic guys.

Yes, it's good. I don't care for Star Wars either and I enjoyed it a lot.

Ah, there were are. It's a regional thing. We take electricity for granted over here in the USA.

Got some Just Cause 2 DLC, almost missed that those were on sale too. A buck for some more crazy weapons in an already ridiculous game is fine by my watch, lol.

But the NBN ought to reduce the time Steam downloads take.

The Dawn of War II: Retribution achievement was easy enough, I AM SIX TICKETS RICH!

I hope that the Dawn of War series goes for cheap this sale. I'd definitely grab Dawn of War II, Chaos Rising and probably the Last Stand DLC bundle because that mode strikes me as being mindless fun in short bursts.

I've never played a Dawn of War game and I don't know why I chose Retribution to be my point of entry into the series.

Are the GTA "classics" optimized in any way at all, like native 360 controller support?
No. You'll need third party drivers to use the triggers.

It'll reset after a while, no idea where Steam might store the cookies. Could try restarting. (Restarting Steam that is...)

Should just reset automatically at some point I think, try restarting client/clearing cookies in browser? (depending on what one you're using)

Relaunch Steam. The age gates don't tie to your account permanently.

Damn steam sales. I bought four or five games during the last hoiday sale that I haven't played and almost certainly never will play. What the hell posessed me to buy Operation Flashpoint, or Dead Rising 2? Just because they're cheap doesn't mean I want to play them. Why the fuck did I buy Tropico 3 of all things? Damn these sales. This is what QVC must be like for old people.

Dawn of War II and Chaos Rising are 7$ off each here, which isn't bad but I'd like to wait and see if there's a Dawn of War package with a slightly better daily deal containing ALL Dawn of War games. I'd buy the THQ Hits pack if I didn't own over half of the games contained in it already, that would net me DoW II Gold which is half way to where I want to be. I'll bite by the end of the sale if a better deal doesn't appear but I think it will.

I have most of the games on daily deal but I picked up Dark Messaiah of might and magic!

I did not get heroes as I have 3 and Kings Bounty!

Thanks for the tip.

Good summer sale so far:

1 game bought that I hadn´t thought about before. and 2 hours playtime in it so far.
3 hours total played in ticket eligable games.
3 tickets aquired.

edit: oh, does recettear have cloud save support? i'm not sure how it works or what games have it, i just know torchlight does.

Cloud save support requires getting some rather specific SDK hooks into the game client. It'd something I'd like to do "eventually", but EGS is still just so busy with their latest project (and with their end of the final bits of Chantelise) that I just can't justify asking them to work on something that, ultimately, isn't strictly "necessary".

Also thanks for all the Recettear love over the past few days, guys. I put the numbers I see on Steam into my calculator, it makes a happy face.

Is there any reason to choose Half-Life vanilla over Half-Life: Source?
Yes. I've not compared them myself, but I asked this a while ago and got a lot more posts in favor of the original. Mostly because of the animations, Source uses the HL2 physics based stuff. There were other reasons posted too.

In fact none of the Source ports were preferred, Day of Defeat, Counter Strike etc.

Ok GAF, can you recommend me a good aerial combat game on Steam? 2D or 3D, I don't care but preferrably more arcade-like. Thanks!

This is going to end horribly...

Before sale : 20~ games
After two days : 60~
After eleven days : ....I'll suck your d*ck for a dollar.

My first holiday sale was horrible. 150 games in 12 days. Bah.

Edit: "horrible" isnt meant to be 100% negative. More a love/hate relationship to all the games I want to buy, and all the games I still havent played.

Seconded. Even though I kinda like Kotor 2 more than 1. I played the second before before the first, that might be the reason that I have more fond memories of it. And wasnt there a fan patch that included all the missing content?

MesserWolf said:
Why do you tempt me like this :(

never heard of these 2 games though ....

If you like classic rpgs, get them. For one, they are one of the few developers who still make them, so we need to throw them some money if we want to have such games.

And other than that, it also doesnt hurt that these games are very good.

Is it Shogun 2 THAT good?

Its probably the best Total War ever made. If you even remotely like the setting, there is no doubt about having one hell of a blast playing it.

Did I already mention that you guys really should buy SpaceChem?

Here is the updated list why:

So. I want you all to buy overlooked games. Todays issue: SpaceChem.
But lets hear all the impressions on this game I could find from other Gaffers:

Just like to say that my wife and I both love this game and we spend way too much time trying to beat one another's designs. Taking forever to make our way through the title because of that, but it's damned fun. Brilliant game.

Dina said:
Tried the demo, first 9 levels or so.

It's something else, I'll say that much. It is pretty daunting and not everything is explained right away, but that is the joy of things. Usually they explain a new function pretty well, but that new function can be implemented in a few ways and they don't explain all the new few ways. So there is some tinkering to be done.

But I like it a lot. It's a real challenge, yet doesn't feel cheap or old.

Corky said:
OMG....

everybody buy space-chem. Like now.

TheJudge said:
Add me to the SpaceChem praisers. Got it today and played for 3 hours straight. Great game and it's pretty fun and challenging. Unlike other puzzle games that tend to rank up difficulty on the last few levels.
The story is not obtrusive, much like Metroid Prime in a way that you can ignore it completely, but I found charm in it. It's very satisfying to solve the puzzles! And they do take brain-power. I'm loving it!

The point is, buy it.

Jive Turkey1 said:

I said I wouldn't get anything today, but I knew I would cave. I haven't tried out the Heroes pack yet. SpaceChem is certainly something. It appeals to my love of chemistry, but holy shit is it hard. Of all the indie games that I have bought and then found pretty lame, this one is one of the best. This is definitely game I will find myself coming back to when I don't have hours to play something.

Oh dear.

So I picked this up last night. Suffice to say, I like it, but I have a problem with it.

I'm obsessed with refinement.

I'm only just out of the first world after over an hour of play. Because I have no trouble creating a *solution*, but then I just can't *stop*. Bring in a second WALDO, double the speed of working. Manage syncing without using sync instructions, save a few cycles.

Getting a solution that lies well to the left of the centre of the bell curve is an awesome feeling. Realising that there are solutions further left of that is infuriating. And just drives me right back into looking at it yet closer.

When I found out you can move the WALDO start points I had to go back and replay all the levels again just to see if I could streamline things further knowing that.

Yes, I like it. As interesting as Codex was, but without the fiddliness that that had with getting the robot arms to do exactly what you intended.

PaletteSwap said:
Everyone should own JC2 and Spacechem. Odds are you'll find Spacechem too complicated/hardcore past 3-4 hours in, but these hours are well worth the price themselves.

I´m counting the hours to get home and purchase spacechem. You can BUY IT RIGHT NOW.
I´m jealous.

And what did the gaming media think of it?

Edit: Oh and there is no negative impression listed, because I couldnt find any.

And the thread:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
For those who had a problem starting out, here is a quick tutorial:

So you dont know what SpaceChem is about? Trust us, your fellow Gaffers, on this recommendation and grab the Demo. I'll teach you how to play.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The most basic premise is that you got a molecule as Input to the left side, and need to transform it so you can output it like you can see on the right.

In the first level, called "Of Pancakes and Spaceships" you got "O=O" as an Input and "O=O" as the output (which means 2 O atoms that are double bonded). How convenient! You dont even need to transform it, just find a way to transport it to the right side. We'll get to transforming later, also ignore the blue line at the bottom for now.

So whats left is the red "Start" and a circle around it. The Start indicated where that circle, called Waldo, is going to start. Big deal. However it doesnt do much, since you didnt gave it any orders yet. To solve this basic levels you need to know the 4 most basic structure with which you can program orders to Waldo:

Arrows: Those change the line Waldo is running on. Play around with giving Waldo different directions.

IN ALPHA:
The playing field is divided into 4 parts. A,B, Psi und W. A and B are on the left side, meaning those are the fields, where you will receive input. Psi and W are on the right, meaning you need to output there. If you put the IN ALPHA in the way of the red Waldo, you will get your INPUT into the ALPHA section of the playing field.

GRAB/DROB:
Now, if you only have the input done, your Waldo doesnt do much about the molecule that just appeared. Change the arrows so that Waldo is able to touch the Molecule that will appear, and put a GRAB/DROP there. This way he'll take the molecule and carry it with him. If you want to put it down, simply use another "GRAB/DROP" in the output zone.

OUT PSI: After you dropped the molecule in the output zone, you still need to tell the game that the output is ready. Looking through your tools, you'll see that the red Waldo got a tool for that. If you put it somewhere, the game will try to output all the molecules and atoms that you prepared in the corresponding output zone.

Now just make your Waldo running the same line again, and you are good to go :) Also take notice that you need to have the whole molecule inside the Output zone and not just a part of it.

Short:
Input Alpha, Grab, Drop, Output Psi

Congrats you solved the first level!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The other tools, which werent used in this level but are still available are easily explained:

Rotate Molecule: Try it out yourself, put it on the Waldo line after it grabbed the "O=O", this will be used later to make your arrangements of atoms fitting to the molecule you want to produce

Sync: If the red and the blue Waldo both have a sync in their way, they'll stop at their respective sync, waiting for the other Waldo to reach theirs. This way you can easily make both lines run parallel if you need them to.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Something else worth mentioning is the act of "Transforming" or Bonding/Unbonding, how its called in this game.

Imagine the "O=O" you got as input, but instead of having "O=O" as Output, you are required to output simply "O". For this you'll get in levels where you need them "Bonders". These are gray shades in the background that you can move around. You'll notice what I mean.

If you let your Waldo carry the "O=O" molecule to 2 Bonders, you can "unbond" them with the tool "Bond -" if both atoms are each over a Bonder. That would give you "O-O" for the moment. Since you'll need "O" however, either let it run through the bonders again, or make a second set up of bonders somewhere else. You'll figure this out on your own :)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, hope that helps for starters for all those who felt it was too badly explained and a bit overwhelming!
