Any tips for dealing with Shotos with Laura? I just can't seem to win vs Ryu/Ken..I've only won 2 matches against Ryu, both same dude..I get in and try to pressure them and get my arse kicked, decide to play defensively and they just spam fireballs. Try mid-range and I either jump into an SRK or land just out of reach and get hit by sweeps..

He was playing my FANG and Mika.

Oh, I just got finish playing a Necalli and I had trouble with the character until I just started throwing out M. Bison's df. HP. Everything went bad for him after that. I didn't realize how good that is until I saw it getting used on LIJoe's stream.

What's the difference between a grab and a command grab? Besides tech (which I don't know what means either).

Grabs is what everyone does with both light attacks. Command grabs are special moves like Zangief spinning piledriver

Teching is when you press the same buttons at the same time as the oponnent to escape the grab (you "tech" it)

You can counter a grab with your own if you do it at the same time (teching). You have to avoid a command grab.

These made me understand it fully. Thanks for the explanation. Just to be sure, to avoid a normal grab, I can either do a tech, neutral jump or backdash right?

Yeah. You can also just stuff the attempt with a move faster than the throw (5f) like a jab, light or special attack. Throws do have priority over normals though so if the normal doesn't become active until the same frame (so it is also 5f and they both started at the same time) the throw will win out.

To avoid it, yes. To escape it, only a tech. What I mean is, you can tech a grab, but you cant dash out of a grab, you need to anticipate it and dash/jump. Does that make sense?

Edit: or just attack like others said

For my shoto matches, I always try to start mid range so I can either jump above a fireball and combo into the mixups, or use the command dash to gain ground. The idea is to be patient, and wait for the fireball. If the guy is patient, poke him with the standing HK to put some kind of pressure. If he jumps, MP is a great anti-air!

Once you get close range, mix the command grabs/throws/overheads up after using the Laura fireball. This is Laura, pressure is your main weapon :)

The way you play him is very intimidating, but you're almost too eager to throw out an attack. I was making you pay for those wake up DPs.

I was landing more than a couple, mostly I was hoping for dropped combos. Too be honest I'm weening myself off the Potemkin ingrained in me from too much Xrd, that move is not hammerfall for sure.

My execution is questionable, but I'd like think my change up is above par.

I was eating them all in the first few matches, but I figured you use it when you think I'm jabbing, or to break out of normal pressure. I did drop my FANG HK combo a lot, though.

Nice work on those command grabs.

Yes, this makes a lot of sense. I feel like I know all about it now. I can't make the CPU just do grabs in Training can I? Would a record suffice?

By the way, I'm laughing out loud now, because I just found out, that L1 is equal to a LP, MP and HP, which instantly made v-reversals much easier! I had always done it by doing back+square+triangle+R1.

So how dumb would it be risking playing with all my ports open? I assume pretty dumb

I just want to actually play ;_;

Cheers, still new to this and figuring out how to play as I get used to my stick, got up to 394LP then had Ryu,Ken,Ryu and dropped back down to 316. I always seem to get 2-3 wins, then a Shoto or a character I've never played against before, got 3 earlier, followed by a 700LP Rashid, never fought him outside story/survival.

I fell asleep on Daigo's stream sadly. Did he ever play ranked or was that stream a whole party to play SFV with top players and to show off tech? It was a great stream but eventually I just fell asleep because I was tired..

? No, hammerfall is a body splash-ish just like Necalli's. But unlike his, Potemkin's is somewhat safe, and leads into his best stuff. I gotta train myself off it. I figure that's the weakest part of my game.

Man, I really want to get gud with Vega but I still haven't figured him out completely. I'm thinking of jumping to Bison or FANG. I'm doomed to play charge characters all my life lol

You can put your PS4/PC in the DMZ on your router to test it out just to see if connections happen. Otherwise it's not recommended to open all ports etc.

I did it yesterday and it works, as I imediatly got into several random lounges for the first time since launch (lol).

Port forwarding to those reddit porta didnt work. Dat desperation

Urien is probably going to be wearing some singlet or something and Capcom will say "he's younger than his SF3 self hence the change".

Maybe in an update?

That and special animations when your heavy attacks are blocked. They even really focused on it in the Capcom Cup 2014 trailer lol. Ryu is the only one with three of those animations. The rest either have only one or none at all. I don't know if they rushed this game or their budget got cut short or what, but it definitely feels like they cut corners on some original details.

Maybe in an update?

...

Actually, allow me:
- Character themes actually being in the game and being selectable during matches?
Maybe in an update?

- Other characters than Ryu having blocked hit animations?
Maybe in an update?

- Stage transitions for other stages than Bustling Side Street?
Maybe in an update?

- Having an intro cinematic that was made for the game but not viewable in the game itself?
Maybe in an update?

- An actual title screen / attract mode?
Maybe in an update?

- Better UI / menus that show stuff like character levels or that gives stronger cues for full meters?
Maybe in an update?

- A way to unlock day/night versions of stages already in the game?
Maybe in an update?

- Servers that work consistently and at the very least don't disconnect you while doing single player modes (robbing you of FM in the process)?
Maybe in an update?

- An arcade mode / fully functional Versus mode (that allows for CPU opponents on both sides)?
Maybe in an update?

- Fixed hair etc. clipping and boob jiggling on both sides of the Character select screen, not just the P1 side?
Maybe in an update?

- A fix for the shadow dithering on PS4 that in many ways ruins the look of the characters?
Maybe in an update?

...

- A roadmap / list of fixes that actually mentions all of these things, not just the server issues?
Maybe in an update?

...

Street Fighter V |OT2| Maybe in an update?

Edit:
I can't believe how bad the story art is in this game. Shit looks like digital sketches you'd find on someone's tumblr

This is the one visual/polish thing I do see people here complain about quite a bit, but oddly enough I've never been overly bothered by the drawings myself. Yes, some of them do look rushed and a bit weird (especially if you compare them to Benhus' old work), but overall I can't help but like their energy, coloring and "cleanliness", even when characters have doritos for mouths. For me, they suit the story mode better than the anime clips used in IV if I'm honest.

Remember Ono being like: "people won't be disappointed in the story mode"?

doesn't give me much hope for the full cinematic mode

edit: Also it's weird that Bison is only 5'11. That is much shorter than I would have expected.

Basically everyone is under 6 feet except for the tall characters who are all over 7

I'm up to 287K fight money myself. I don't know why I bothered but I did Normal Survival with Ken, Chun-Li, and Cammy. At least looks pretty cool in full on purple.

Okay, woke up, it's 7 in the morning, and I am at page 331 of this thread. Which means there's about 25 pages to read up on. I switched to Ryu for a little time, and finished watching the "Official Character Guide for Ryu", so I know his basics but yet my brain decides to freeze in an actual match. I got five casual online matches with him, lost them all, so I decided to share my fourth fight on my Youtube. I know I need to defend more, yet I think I'm getting better at this aspect, and need to be a little more patient. Please give feedback.

On another note, I just got my FIRST EVER WIN IN A STREET FIGHTER game ever. Any Street Fighter game. It was a casual online match, and I could see I were up against a super scrub but whatever, I take the win! And my first win at that. This time I were playing Charlie Nash, and I know I didn't use any meter in this match, but do you have any other feedback I can take with me? I shared that video on my Youtube here.

I can feel that I am not hitting the commands right sometimes. When I consistently do a light punch, it's because I'm trying to do a grab. If I'm punching downward, it's because I tried do a CA. And failed at both. Also, I think it'll help me, if I invest in a Fighting Commander 4, especially for those v-reversals.

Anyway, FIRST EVER WIN EVER!!!

Congrats on the first win. I'd say the biggest thing you need to work on is combos and better spacing. You had plenty of chances for good damage when hitting with st.lp you can target combos into st.mp and go into medium or heavy scythe and even EX if you have the meter to spend. Be careful of using his moonsault raw as most players would punish you for doing it that far out. Try using his medium scythe from max range to get some chip. He also has some other gooday normal attacks that can be safe when used properly in right situations. I like how you were consciously using your v skill on him but try and incorporate his v trigger into your attack as it is very useful. His heavy punch is very useful too for crush counters which can lead to big damage. Forward + HP has a lot of range and if successfully used you can do heavy assault after crush counter for good damage and meter steal.

Also be careful on using raw heavy attacks that close to your opponent they are very negative on block and usually easy to see coming. If you are that close try mixing in throws to keep your opponent guessing if you are going to throw or hit then. Other than that you will get the hang of things with more experience and practice. Just try and be more calm when playing as I am sure you are pressing buttons a lot which is what I gather from the amount of jabs I see being thrown out.
