While I do sympathize with so many of his parts being cut out, it's kind of easy to see why the reaction towards Leto's Joker has been so much more mixed than Ledger's. His performance simply wasn't very good in the few minutes we were allowed to see, and his antics leading up to the release were corny as hell. It's not like he was receiving death threats or was harassed repeatedly online, so I think he'll be okay.
However, I wonder how this affects his working relationship with WB/DC moving forward. He might be discouraged from doing future films knowing how much WB fucks up and exec-meddles with their DC catalogue.
Leto is awesome, yeah. Dallas Buyers Club, Requiem for a Dream, Mr. Nobody. Even the smallish roles in Lord of War, Panic Room, Fight Club and such. I really like him.
That said, I can feel his dissappointment about SS. Joker was just cut out. I can see there's something lurking under Leto's Joker, but Ayer cut it off. I don't know if they want to bring that madness in the future films or what, but this was really mellow considering all the stories and rumors from the SS set.
Yeah. It was working with the character intros despite the shitty editing. But once they enter the mission they all become a bunch of lames. No ruthlessness whatsoever. In dirty dozen one of the soldiers stayed being a dick straight through to the end.
In here they are all so compliant. I think croc should have eaten Scott Eastwood or boomerang should have fucked some shit up for everybody after Flagg destroyed the detonator tbh. The most human thing in this movie is boomerang immediately leaving the bar after Flagg freed them of their bombs lol. But of course they bring him back for no reason
Boomerang using Slipknot as a guinea pig, although I'm not even sure that was intentional because he bolted too...
Ummmmmmmmmm....Harley stole that purse. Deadshot pointed that gun at the guard...but then he fired into the air.
I think the silliest thing was how repetitious this movie is.
There are three plane crashes, two of them occurring within like 5 minutes of each other. The goal is extract Waller and stop Enchantress. They save Waller only for her to be kidnapped (after a plane crash) a few minutes later.

It's worse when you realize that the plan to save Waller was basically taking the helicopter to the office building, landing on it, and picking her up and then leaving.
if Waller and her team had control of The Enchantress's heart the entire time that the evil magic stuff was destroying the world, why didn't they just destroy it at the start of that whole thing?
seriously, they waited the entire movie fighting past a million faceless denizens to do something they could have done at the very start, ending the threat, saving the world. why didn't they do this?
i suppose you could argue Waller et al had a hidden agenda but seeing as how she had to be rescued from the magic army it still makes no sense why she wouldn't just give the order to destroy the heart.

Might want to put some of that in spoilers. Answer below.
Waller did immediately try this. Enchantress went to her brother, who did something to prevent the damage to the heart from killing her. Not a great explanation was given, something about him "sharing his power"? Enchantress got her heart back much later in the movie, after capturing Waller if I'm recalling correctly.

The worst thing is that the characters wanted to leave and they disappeared and we didn't care, they popped back again later and we still did not care. Just bad
Saw it today in the afternoon, it was a meh experience. I was hoping Captain Boomy to deliver a fun performance but he is just pushed to the background. A lot of times the movie just feels lame, really lame.
They present these characters as some badass cool mofos but never saw them as that, the Japan chick was hilariously bad and underutilized. Joker was so lame to me, he was just there.
All I wanted in the movie was for Captain Boomy to take his shirt off and just have hot animal sex with someone, don't care if it's crock .... fuck! Boomy looks so good, he was sex.
I think the baddest thing they did was Harley stealing a purse. Funnies part was when Will says "that's some gangster shit" to X woman.
at the climax, my partner leaned over and was like "doesn't he have a gun" and I started cackling.
The first 30 minutes when Waller sits at the table
should not have been in the movie, it destroys any semblance of tone. But that doesn't matter because the shitty soundtrack just blares the dullest generic "epic" noises no matter the scene.
And did they ever really establish the zombies could shoot guns? Like who shot the helicopter down the first time?
And I was really sympathetic to Jared leto, and maybe with more screen time he shines, but as is, any time he was on screen I would cringe from embarrassment. It's like they only kept the cornball moments and don't let him breathe, like when he
goes from being moody about whatever to laying back in an immaculate circle of knives while laughing for no reason.
He should have been the main bad, because having people who can punch and shoot good take on
magical creatures was just to unbelievable to invest in. Oh no, that creature turned his arm into fiery obsidian and cut down these buildings with a faint swing! Let me slowly swim through this aqueduct and punch him at my leisure!
Really wanted to like this movie, but we could only really laugh at how much of a miss it was. My partner brought up, and I agree, the only time the movie seemed ok, was hints at the larger dccu, like
flash and batmans
inclusion, and just how casual it was. Still excited for WW.
At least toronto looked nice, and now I understand the set I walked through when they were shooting here
Since Guardians of the Galaxy has been mentioned here I'll also add that I felt like Suicide Squad was trying to copy the use of hit songs but failed =/ They even used a song that was IN GotG!
Being criminals has nothing to do with it. Suicide squad was a total failure in character development and interactions. Its a total failure in everything it tried to do.
Watched the movie yesterday and it was bad but not terrible.
The flashbacks and the way they tried to flesh out the characters felt sloppy and made the movie a little bloated and the main plot was uninteresting and empty.
On the other hand I enjoyed the character interactions (save for the end), Leto Joker was nice and there were some funny parts on it.
I wouldn't recommend it and I liked BvS better I think. I had to see it for myself after all the reviews.

I think what they should of done was introduce us to the "world wide threat" first, then give the idea, "we need bad guys to do our dirty work". Suicide Squad is formed and now we have somewhat of a clear objective. Movie was kind of all over the place.
I'm a DC guy through and through but the logic jumps people make to put the Dccu in the same league as mcu is saddening. Mcu movies are better at least DC has the comics.

I finally saw this on Monday and I was so utterly disappointed. I never saw the theatrical cut of BvS so I don't have that experience for comparison, but this was by far a worse film than the ultimate cut of BvS.
There were so few moments of anything that brought either genuine emotion or excitement; even the fight scenes which probably should have been good weren't due to weird camera work and what is possibly the most generic and unmemorable OST I've ever heard (the licensed stuff was... better? But they spammed it a lot).
The highlights were by far Margot and Will's performances - Will really surprised me but I felt I enjoyed most of his scenes. They also seemed to be reasonably better written than the rest of it but I don't know how much of that is due to his performance elevating it. Margot was fantastic too, but I hated how they portrayed Harley - Harley is a "sexy" character, but they make her into basically a stripper for this film. The scene where she changes was particularly egregious and unnecessary and highlights exactly how the male characters are treated vs. her. Viola Davis was also amazing as Amanda, but we know that she can play that type of character excellently thanks to her incredible performance on How To Get Away With Murder.
The first Enchantress scene was really cool as well, particularly the transformation. Great stuff. I also really liked the
scene where Harley is on top of the car in the rain after she thinks she's lost the Joker. That was probably the most emotionally impactful moment of the entire film and I loved how those shots looked
. I also liked the bit where
Batman punches Harley in the face after she attacks him underwater - I thought that was a great little character moment
.
Then we get to anything Joker and it's shit. He is basically just a club owner (so... The penguin?) and Jared made him sound like Count Olaf/Jim Carrey. The worst, worst part was this exchange:
Joker: would you die for me
Harley: of course
Joker: no... That's too easy.,. Would you LIVE for me?
It was literally like something out of My Immortal or some other 12 year old fan fiction. Absolutely tragic.
Overall I thought it was a mess of a film and I'm very disappointed about that because it had some great performances that were almost able to take it into "ok" territory but ultimately failed. I feel so bad for the actors, what a shame.
