I thought it was alright. I think the lack of a consistent tone hurts it most for me. It really drags in the middle, and the tone there is where it drags. I think the casting was pretty great overall. Writing was...okay, except for the tone dragging it in a certain direction.

There was one line in the entire movie that made go 'really? That seems very out of character' near the end. It just sticks out at you and makes you shake your head.

Leto's Joker, honestly, while pretty good, the character felt out of place for me in this movie.

So...I'd say this is a 6.5/10 movie. Good to Okay, not great. Enjoyable, maybe not memorable.

I tend to view critic reviews as one part of whether I'll like a movie; most of them don't share my tastes, so I'll mostly just use them as a barometer for what kind of a movie I should expect. Personally, it feels like they're taking Squad to task for flaws that they let slip by on earlier comic-book films; endless army, unnecessary save the world plot, that kind of thing.

I haven't really seen many reviews single these out the primary problems of the movie. A lot of the biggest criticisms I've seen are aimed at the editing, pacing, tone, character balance, superfluous Joker, etc.

Even still, I wouldn't say cannon fodder enemies or a big bad threat from the sky or destruction porn were problems that slipped by anyone in earlier movies. The first couple times you see that shit in a superhero movie, it's cool; by the 10th and 11th times, it's pretty tired. Granted Marvel has done that in more movies than Fox or WB/DC have, but at least they're starting to change things up. So maybe SS is only WB's third movie in this series, and maybe Apocalypse is the first time X-Men did the mass destruction thing, but these movies don't exist in a vacuum. If you were getting tired of that shit in Marvel's movies, you're gonna be really tired of it now in other studios' movies.

So Jahns, Angry Joe, and The black nerd seem pretty positive on the movie and the rotten tomatoes audience score is pretty high. the metacritic isn't too bad and the user score is good there as well. I think I'm going to go see it.

As fresh as Green Lantern, but were there standing ovations?

You think the audience score is high? BvS began at 95% audience score, SS began at 75%, audience score means nothing the first month

Was it

?

Because that literally made me lol. I get what they were going for, but man that execution was bad.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but the last Marvel movie to go ham on the destruction porn was really Avengers 2 and it got taken to task for that. Recent Marvel movies don't follow that trend going off Ant Man, Civil War, Iron Man 3, Winter Soldier, and GotG to some extent. The weaker Marvel movies do the cannon fodder stuff and they usually get dinged pretty harshly as a result.

MCU only change things up when it comes to final battle starting with Ant-Man.

And it looks like Doctor Strange will follow by doing its own thing.

Watched it last night. Everything was terrible, but what really irked me was just how off was the soundtrack in general, didn't match the atmosphere or the scenes at all. An army, march-like theme for a stealth scene? What?

Saw the movie last night. I had the same feeling about this movie as when I left the theater from BvS. There is a great movie in there somewhere, but for me at least the pacing was all over the place and felt that some characters weren't really used at all and almost not really important(Katana). Harley and Deadshot were the main attractions for me and I enjoyed it for the most part. Leto's Joker wasn't around long enough for me to give an honest opinion about it but I thought he was cool. I really liked Captain boomarang and Croc for what scenes they did have.

I kind of wish they went with an Assault on Arkham type story instead of this plot. Also some of the music that was used in some scenes seemed out of place and some of the jokes seemed forced. I really hope we get to see an ultimate cut, but I doubt it.

The Metacritic is 41%...

Ok, let's strap in.

I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to films. I live 5 minutes away from a nice movie theater; I'll watch anything from He Named Me Malala to Furious 7, and usually come away pretty satisfied. It's hard for me to not like a film. Even stuff like Transformers 3, which was a stupid ass movie, has something that appeals to me, like the absolute carnage that happens in Chicago.

For Suicide Squad, it's pretty easy to recognize the flaws in it, but to me, it was a ton of fun to watch. And it was never boring; something that basically every movie this summer totally fanned on.

It's a loud movie. All the character intros are extremely colorful, full of bombast, and do a pretty decent job on filling us in on the backstory (though I still would've vastly preferred these characters to show up in previous movies, but alas). They felt well thought out, and for the most part, all had hooks to them.

The action is OK. I generally prefer WB's way of shooting films over most studios, so they're still quite on point there, but it could've been better on the action front itself. The movie shines the most to me when they're focusing on the core concepts of either the Squad (bad guys forced into doing good), or the characters themselves. My favorite scene wasn't even a big setpiece or large scale battle (two things that I'm unsure as to why the movie needed them), but a small bar scene. Banter between extraordinary people is still intriguing to me.

I don't really think there were any misfires, casting wise. Will seems back in leading man mode, though I probably would've preferred more of a focus on him, to be honest. Margot is excellent, pretty good emotional anchor. El Diablo's subplot is solid. Boomerang and Croc seem like they're there to troll, which is fine. Katana didn't do too much, and neither did Joker, which makes all the heat about the latter seem kinda dumb. Your highlights are probably Harley/Deadshot/Waller, in that order.

I tend to view critic reviews as one part of whether I'll like a movie; most of them don't share my tastes, so I'll mostly just use them as a barometer for what kind of a movie I should expect. I'd say Squad starts off well, stumbles a bit in the middle, but gets to the finish line in a solid way (probably due to the reshoots). It's a fun ass movie. Perfect for a matinee if you're bored. It feels like more the product of people's hype being deflated versus the actual quality of the film itself, which is no more egregious than most summer films.

Me? I'll go watch it again tomorrow. I'm a sucker like that.

Glad to hear!

Watching it tonight, excited

Went to the film before the reviews. Had an awesome time.

LOVED: the Suicide Squad (Everyone rocked!!! Especially the main hitters Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Viola Davis!!!)
DISLIKED: The Joker (too slimy and childish), the major mission/the main villain (too simple and cartoony for what could have been an more psychologically challenging movie.)

But reading the reviews.....oh my word....

It's like a personal vendetta or something. I feel so bad.

I think I'll go see this on Saturday but I ain't got no friends. How awkward is it seeing a movie alone?

I don't find it awkward in the least bit and I actually prefer going to the movies alone. I'll usually watch a movie I really want to see by myself and then I'll go see it a 2nd time with the lady friend or with some buddies.

Civil War & Deadpool came out too early to count in that, IMO

If we include them it's Civil War, if not then it's Suicide Squad because Jason Bourne fucking shit the bed while traveling back in time to 2002 for the same plot

So, just got back from this and yep, it's probably the worst movie I've seen this year.

Congrats, BvS. You're finally better than something.

On SchmoesKnow live show last night, JTE said that he knows an insider that actually viewed the original Ayer cut earlier this year. This was around the time people were leaking that it was a complete mess. Apparently the Ayer original had a lot more violence with Croc and a much darker tone. It didn't have the popular music at all. The BvS reception did influence the final theatrical version. JTE is very trustworthy.

is he trustworthy enough that if he says his friend told him an early Dr. Strange screening was 'breathtaking', that we should believe him?

Matinee showing?
Nah, I changed my mind and think I'll go tonight, I've literally done nothing but play TLOU all week so I think I should get out a bit. But you guys are right there's really no difference compared to going with someone and usually when I go with someone they talk or are on their phone.

Agreed. Just flat out incompetent.

Can't remember a film I've disliked this much in a while.
