Macross Frontier 1

Very meh beginning. art is pretty good,
I do like Ranka already.
It's weird. Knowing more about Macross as a franchise, it's kind of strange how Frontier was basically a mishmash of random Macross references smashed together.

Of course, as basically the show that got me into contemporary animu, I still remember it fondly for not being totally grimdark for the sake of being grimdark, which was the trend in western TV science fiction at the time.

They tried to make the music sound as if it were coming from an alien culture to match the invented language, clothing, and architecture, but I think they went too far in doing that.

Well, their hearts were in the right place.

Most of the time.

We might all go on and on about the NTR, but what makes us get the feels is the innate understanding of the nature of communication and how hard it is to connect with others at times, those moments when communication fails and you long to reach out to the other but they're locked in a similarly unfortunate situation. :/

The love and resentment that binds the three characters together is always interesting to see. As usual the show balances humor and /the feels/ deftly. Which is what makes it all the more bittersweet, I suppose.

Also good god what an ugly hat.

Genmu Senki Leda

It's nice to be surprised. I started this thinking it was going to be run-of-the-mill girl transported to a fantasyland show. Indeed, it started like that.
znkBal.png

Our very 80s protagonist.

The story is simple enough. Yohko composes a song that's supposed to embody the love she feels for a classmate or whatever but before she can give it to him, she's transported to an alien world, Ashanti, as the song she composed was actually a key that allowed such. It's the heart of Leda, a remnant of a legendary warrior, and whether by coincidence or design, her song was the same. She's quickly forced to acclimate herself to the world

PrLfVl.png

Strange new land and all that.
lv6wgl.png

There's even a talking dog sidekick!

It was about here I was ready to shut this off and come back some other time. Instead I put that off until the first action sequence and I was sold for the rest of the OVA. If Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01 was mechanical animation porn, Genmu Senki Leda is the same for Kanada style animation. Anytime the action kicked up, it was just a joy to watch and there was more than enough to carry me to the end. It's not to say the OVA didn't have its faults as I didn't much care for the flashbacks to the real world or the insert songs but hey, the animation helped elevate this to something very neat to watch. There's a little clip of a transformation sequence that's sort of the OVA distilled. I'd say if one liked what they see here, said person would be onboard with the fantasy elements and OVA in general.

Also, this was neat:

QH3Irl.png
1TR4kl.png

I immediately thought of Giant Robo. No idea if related or influenced though. I could have sworn there was a shot that matched far more closely but fuck if I can find it tonight. I was thinking Shanghai or Saint Abbe but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Mawaru-Penguindrum 1:

It seems safe to try watching this again, so far removed from the GAF-hype which surrounded it when it was originally airing.

The animation style is certainly interesting and unique, though it's clearly of a low budget. Faces in particular are pretty inconsistent, especially during wide-angle shots. Colors pop brightly though and the character designs are certainly different in close-up shots.

Kanba, who narrates the opening and closing of this first episode, explains the precepts of Nihilism pretty straightforwardly during his voiceover sequences. His obsession with the idea of "Fate" is also basically undisguised Fatalism but his world view is essentially nihilist. He and Shouma are both apparently also siscons but that's unrelated to his philosophy.

I'm sure if I watch this show from beginning to end I'll start thinking penguins really say "QQQQQQQQ" all the time when they are doing things.

You know, there's a part of me that hopes the :firehawk shoe doesn't drop and the show ends exactly where episode 4 leaves things off. lol

I kinda hope so too. Delicious feelings.

Best ending:
there was never a ghost and he's hallucinating all of it, but makes up being possessed in order to get to the wife without feeling any NTR guilt. Bonus points if he's also somehow sleeping with the sister-in-law as himself and he somehow manages to have two relationships going on at the same time and as two different people.

I shouldn't watch this show while I'm hungry.

I wish this arc could last forever. It's so much fun to see the characters develop in this arc; Houtarou anticipating the Chitanda request before it comes, Satoshi having an opportunity to play the straight man role, Chitanda's pitiful efforts at asking for favors, and Mayaka's peer problems. And this mystery is actually pretty interesting. There's also fun visual stuff like Chitanda remembering Irisu's advice with her fingers. This arc should be shown in film school.

Mahou Sensei Negima Movie: Anime Final

bVqwV.jpg

Oh that Negi. Always getting raped by his students.

So let me get this straight. You decide to make a high budget movie based off a very popular battle shounen property, get the original creator involved, put the most directors on it for anything ever, and have it take place... after the main conflict is already resolved?

Akamatsu, I don't know what you were smoking when you thought this was a good idea, but it was probably the same stuff you were smoking when you decided to end Negima the way you did.

IPpFO.jpg

Introducing the villain of the movie; A FUCKIN BARRIER! YAYYYYY!

This movie is structured in a way that makes it absolutely unwatchable for anyone that isn't already a fan of the series. Before the main "plot" begins, we're treated to bits and pieces of the penultimate battle in the manga, each accompanied by the number of the manga chapter they correspond to. It's a neat idea, but the scene choice is really weird. Like, the stealth scene when Fate is making the keyblade or the introduction of the other Fates and then NOTHING ELSE from that major skirmish.

Yeah, there were a few fight scenes that got animated, but they were given such little attention compared to rather insignificant stuff, it's pretty annoying. To make matters worse, we're then shown highlights from the final battle... in manga form. Are you fuckin kidding me? You make the opening credits random pages from the thing you should have animated? My god, how lazy can you get?

dhDRI.jpg

aRlU1.jpg

Best couple is still best couple.

When the intro is done, we're treated to what is essentially nothing for 80% of the rest of the movie. Seriously, it's basically an epilogue that feels like filler. You got your light-hearted slice of lifeness, your recountance of important events that would have been nice to actually see, your overall screwing around, etc. The "conflict" (if you can even call it that) is an incredibly minor "who will Negi choose" plot point, with the ones not being chosen
losing their memories.
Just really dull all around.

Of course, there were some good parts. Kaede and Mana (her voice is manly as fuck btw) have a REALLY awesome little fight. Very well choreographed, good animation, good sense of scale, adequate length. Definitely the highlight of the film by far. And that's followed by another "preliminary" match that isn't so bad either.

Then the last 20 minutes or so happen, and it's one uninteresting deus ex machina after another. So many things wrong with it. First of all,
Negi decides to choose ALL of his students, making a pactio with each one (kind of harkening back to the original anime's ending). This could have been cool, but of the previously non-pactio'd people, the only one we got to see do anything was Chachamaru. All the other new ones just kind of stood there in their new magic attire. If you're gonna give us a "what if" scenario, don't bitch out on it!

Then, out of nowhere, friggin
Chao arrives. Seriously, her reason for being there made no sense at all. Her explanation was "you made a pactio with everyone else, so that means I can show up." Um, wat? How does that work? Have I forgotten something important (actually, I probably have, but it's still dumb).

And that doesn't even begin to describe how EVERYTHING works out in the most perfect, contrived way in the very end. Oh, and best of all, we get a
true harem end! Woo!

ugNba.jpg

Lagann Impact!

Despite my complaints, I didn't hate the movie. It was just extremely underwhelming considering this was supposed to be an important, alternate take on the existing, underwhelming ending, rather than one that just ended up being only marginally better. I would have MUCH preferred this adapt other portions of the manga like the Rakan vs Negi fight, or hell even the entire magical tournament back when Chao was the villain. Ah well, what can you do.

Top 10 anime? From the lists I saw, I wonder if Miyazaki doesn't count. Why not, his stuff is too good for a best of anime list? So yeah, a no-Miyazaki favorite anime list... hard beyond the top three. Not sure if I can continue past that point. I could list several dozen things I like the most, but trying to limit it... hmm, that's hard.

If instead of listing a bunch of stuff I go by MAL, I've given 10s to: Serial Experiments Lain, Haibane Renmei, Kino's Journey (plus movies), Noir, Sora no Woto (plus OVAs), Excel Saga, Azumanga Daioh, Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Spirited Away, Texhnolyze, .hack//sign, The Place Promised in our Early Days, Escaflowne... and, of course, Garzey's Wing and IS. :D

Those last two are obviously my two favorite "bad" animes ever, but for the rest, I think that possibly excepting Texhnolyze, that's a pretty good top fifteen I think. It's funny that I gave Texhnolyze a 10 though, because I don't like it quite as much as Angel Beats or Kanon 2002... but I gave those two 9s. Oh well. Texhnolyze certainly is amazing, even if it's got some logical flaws and unexplained story elements. But those other two are just as good or better, though the Kanon 9 is justifiable on the grounds of docking it a point for the iffy art, of course, so I guess that one would go a bit lower. However, it is kind of hard to choose between Angel Beats and Texhnolyze... they both deserve to be on the list. Maybe I should move Angel Beats up to a 10...

Anyway, not counting IS and Garzey's, that's a pretty good top fifteen or sixteen I think. But what order do they go in... I know the top three for sure, but I'm not sure for the rest. Of course though, the lists being done in this thread were sans movies. That makes it easier, I had five in that list. That leaves just eleven for this list.

1. Serial Experiments Lain
2. Haibane Renmei
3. Kino's Journey
(not absolutely in order below this)
The Vision of Escaflowne
Noir
Excel Saga
.hack//SIGN
Sora no Woto
Angel Beats
Texhnolyze
Azumanga Daioh

That's a good list, though not perfect. Oh well. It'll have to do, otherwise I'd have to list like 30+ things including movies and OVAs. :)

Movies top 5: Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky, Spirited Away, The Place Promised in our Early Days, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

Well, I made a MAL. Hope you assholes are happy :(

I have one too now (a_black_falcon), but I ignore their scoring system and use the one I always use, with 7 as decent/average, 1-5 for failing, etc. It would be wrong to score any other way...

With anime dead and me being a bit tired of nanoha, what shall I watch today?

Current backlog of started stuff of recent.

- sailor moon
- rkb
- utena
- toriko
- saki side a
Have you watched Nanoha A's yet? If not, watch that. Otherwise, Saki Achiga-hen.

Alot of anime are good during their duration but lots of them always have endings that just really lack any sort of quality or are just way to abrupt, and Ouran, could have had a much stronger ending or even a season two, the characters could have used the much needed increased screentime, like the Hitachiins. Still one of the funniest anime Ive ever seen.
Weak endings are one of anime and manga's most common, and annoying, scourges, yeah. It is kind of odd how bad they are so, so often at ending decently...

Dawg Days"'" 1-3

So is this season just gonna alternate between playfighting and everyone just hanging around shooting the shit? Cause I find myself surprisingly okay with this.
Yeah, it's just such a fun, happy series... don't change much, Dog Days'!

What the fuck was up with that transformation sequence, though? That shit just seemed wrong.
Yeah, it was definitely wrong, very wrong... I have no idea what they were thinking there, but it was disturbing and shouldn't have happened. Apart from that the season is great so far though...

That was the entirety of the first season, and I imagine they aren't really going to change the formula.

You don't remember the first season, do you? No, the first season wasn't like that. First, there was drama about whether he'd ever be able to return that kept the mood down a fair amount of the time. Second, there was Leo threatening the kingdom of Biscotti and seemingly having gone evil also adding a darker side. And third, the ending of the season got into somewhat serious business.

In comparison, so far S2 has nothing like any of those. It's all happiness and haremizing, so far. And yes, I would be quite happy if it stayed that way; I think it works very well as it is. The first season did have a lot of this stuff too, sure, but it's MUCH more pronounced so far this season thanks to the complete absence, so far, of the more serious elements, and the ridiculously cheerful tone.

This is why you never hire Silver Link to do anything:
Far worse art there than the manga... disappointing. I mean, the manga doesn't look anything special, but it looks decently good, at least. That... no, not close to that.

It looks like the manga, so the manga readers should be happy about the designs.
Sure, the art style is somewhat similar, but no, it's definitely not as good.

Okay, that has to be fujoshi sales - I guess we'll know for sure if the DVD numbers are higher than the BDs - because I can't see why anyone would want to own this show.
I want, as a comic and the anime fan.

Its the best thing that came out from Jump recently. Fujoshi know the good thing unlike the male counterpart.

Maybe the manga is more self-aware, but the anime is just silly given that it wants to be Inazuma Eleven but set in the real world.

But fair enough, maybe you want to watch the anime. Why would you want to own it though?

The first week sales for Vol1 was 15,908 BD and 6,101 DVD. It's promising to see that the sales of Vol2 has gone up significantly. Vol1 eventually sold 34,895. It'll be interesting to see if Vol2 will surpass that as well. Very impressive showing for a TV series which doesn't even actually air. :)

Someone should let them know that Taichi doesn't have glasses or black hair.

maybe taichi's painted on the sliding door... :(

Best ending:
there was never a ghost and he's hallucinating all of it, but makes up being possessed in order to get to the wife without feeling any NTR guilt. Bonus points if he's also somehow sleeping with the sister-in-law as himself and he somehow manages to have two relationships going on at the same time and as two different people.

kinda answered your own question there! *shakes fist at bad fujoshi taste*

Nobody respects the Ghost Moe. I don't know if anyone watched it either.
it's a shame as it was clearly the best supernatural moe show of the season
unless drool moe falls under that category
