Doom: The Dark Ages |OT| Mod City

Finally finished this today with all the secrets and achievements. I had a great time! I enjoyed it more than Eternal, but I will give Eternal another go. On release Eternal never clicked with me, because I had Covid shit to deal with on release. I'm a social care worker so it was all a mess back then. No lockdown for me, so when Eternal was released I wasn't in the right frame of mind, and the first person platforming and resource management annoyed the shit out of me. This? Now? Great! It felt like Doom! The open spaces, the simple combat loop clicked with me.
At a point in the game you could see that this may have originally been a reimagining of Quake 1 OR, this is ID dipping their toes into doing a reboot of the original Quake (God I hope so)...Anyway. Good game, and I appreciate that ID did something different with each iteration of the recent Doom trilogy.

Now to try Doom Eternal again....I may use the Ranger skin though!
Man! I'm hungry for a new Quake!! Damn!

[EDIT] Finished chapter 5. Honestly one of my favorite FPS levels ever. Flying around, counter dodging to destroy the cannons, seamlessly landing then infiltrating on foot and taking out a mini boss, then bust out and land mid air on the dragon again to fly around, boost chase other pilots, just a true pure fun action level. Great stuff. Also really appreciate how much the basic shield dash adds to combat. Can be used from far away and instantly closes the distance in a really fun way that pairs perfectly with the shotgun. Gore and muscle wasting on the enemies is great with chunks just falling off. Stacking classes of weapons on the X button as a toggle is also really smart.
Did you do second dragon mission?

As good as chapter 5 is, second one blows it out of water.

Sorry to say this but anyone criticising dragon missions in this game has lost their freaking mind.

Not yet. Haven't had any time to play lately. I'll get in a level or 2 today hopefully

Yes - option 1, that's what I've been doing. Finding the secrets and grinding the weapon challenges in easy areas, then going back to the menu.
Thanks! That makes it a bit easier.

Completed the game on UV, the last few chapters were great. I loved the string of boss fights in chapter 21. All of it was great, but it was a satisfying ending to the journey.

Any word yet on a fix for the Berseker trophy?

I can't get my platinum until they patch the bug to give it to me and I refuse to replay the whole game and could get the bug twice.

It was fixed in update 1 that came out last week:

Achievements

  • Resolved an issue in which some users could not unlock the Berserker Achievement/Trophy upon obtaining the necessary upgrades. This should resolve retroactively for affected users

They didn't fix it.

Ton of posts online like me. Still would have to replay whole game.

Fuck id.
Weirdly, I got the berserker achievement when going back into an earlier level after finishing the game, despite not having all the shield upgrades. Had all the melee upgrades but not the last items on the first two shield runes.

On Chapter 19 and it's still a great time, but like some have said, I can only really play this in short bursts. That isn't a complaint to be clear because I really love how much it demands of me in each combat scenario and it feels fucking badass!

I'm not a huge fan of the events that happen with the Slayer at this point in the game, which I won't bother talking about due to spoilers. I'm looking forward to going back through some of my favourite levels on a lower difficulty (Nightmare at this point can be a fucking nightmare at times!) so I can finish all the weapon challenges.

Maybe related to recent patch?

While potential workarounds have been floating about for more dedicated fans, the good news is you don't need to worry about it anymore. Doom: The Dark Ages Update 1 goes out of its way to fix the issue for good. Even better: This achievement will retroactively unlock for youif you were one of the affected players. Simply boot up your save file with all the upgrades unlocked and this should pop for you.
Maybe the update is a little bit too kind in unlocking the berserker achievement now :lollipop_smiling_face_eyes:

I wish Id started on a lower rank lol, the game is pretty big and I got stuck in several times just clearing it first time. Think Id have a better time learning the weapons and unlocking everything on an easier run. And then go for a narrower run on Nightmare to only upgrade the weapons I really need and not worry about finding secrets. Clearing on UV took me 40+ hours.

Im curious what your issue is with the Slayer on those levels, as I thought the whole twist at that point was super cool.

Mopped up the last of the achievements - took 35 hours, including 8 hours lost when it deleted my save. This game is so good, I would probably have abandoned most other games if they sent me back to the start after that long.

Tried:
-reloading a save for final level
-tried an earlier level like chapter 17 to a check point and going to the shrine
-Tried starting a new save to pop my first upgrade

Maybe they fixed this achievement for Xbox players but not the trophy for PlayStation users.

Well that sucks even more if they still didnt fix it for PlayStation. I dont know the process behind it, and if its up to Sony to do something about it.

But I can say it worked for me the same way as calistan calistan in that the berserker achievement got unlocked before I had all the upgrades. I double checked and the date on the berserker achievement was unlocked on the 7/6 and the melee part of it was unlocked on the 10/6, so they did a fix that just unlocked it for everyone I guess. Hopefully it will be sorted out soon!

Decided to start this after finishing Oblivion Remake. I'm at Chapter 8 so far and I'm really enjoying the fact that the cutscenes are showing Doomguy/Doom Slayer as this relentless Terminator.

No words, just action and a simple directive: Eliminate all demons. He is a force of nature that people look at with slight intrigue and awe yet visible fear when he's headed in their direction. At the same time, the gameplay itself makes you earn that feeling.

It's a great balance that not many other franchises nail.

Even with the latest patch from days ago, HDR is a blurry ugly mess on PS5. They added some new HDR contrast slider which doesn't help at all. Even better, when you launch the game, the title screen is blurry, but if you go into the settings and adjust the FOV setting once, you can see the screen darken like the display brightness gets affected. So it appears that there is a bug (at least on PS5) that when the game launches, the HDR isn't even working at all until you go in the settings and adjust the FOV slider. What a fucking joke.

Hmmm haven't seen that trick posted. Will see on Friday when I get home if that works.

I hope they do another patch soon to fix the berserker trophy permanently. Seems to have only fixed the achievement side but not the trophy.

Would like some kind of leaderboard mode added too.

Am I missing something with this game. Completed the first level and wasn't blown away.
Shotgun feels like there's no weight and more like the flak cannon from ut2004.
Nail gun thing thats a poor substitute for the machine gun.

Enemies don't look any better than eternal and worse in some came which is bizzare considering the performance difference (eternal runs at 144 FPS for me).
I put it on hell or whatever hard/very hard is. Yeah you can take a ton of damage very fast and easily but the areas are huge and it's easy to block and parry. Gameplay feels like a downgrade to eternal.

first level is only 5% of the game's potential
if the parry felt too easy, try to reduce the parry window (one at a time if you want, or just go all the way)
the first starter shotgun is a bit lackluster yes, but you will later get the super shotgun. that actually plays great

game picks up the pace around chapter 8 so i'd say give it a bit more chance

I actually dislike the nail gun. It's not very satisfying to use.
Game is different than Eternal and thats good. Maybe you will enjoy later levels.
