Doom: The Dark Ages |OT| Mod City

Finished it last night. There were aspects to it that the two previous entries seemed to lack. The shield is fantastic. They must have gotten rid of the chain linked shotgun or am I dreaming? Final fight in 2016 is hard to beat but TDA did a better job than Eternal imo. Story was crazy. As if I'll remember any of it besides physical events. I had fun. Towards the end I had strategies for all the enemies until they were laughably easy to kill. I really liked this game. A few things that kinda bugged me. The variety of mission objectives felt way too predictable. Some gameplay segments felt too repetitive for their own good. Maybe we're just use to things by now. I wanted more weird 💩like rip off a limb to unlock a door. Some of those levels gave me Halo vibes. lol all I needed was a warthog with all those ramps. I'd love it if weapons changed with upgrades like BioShock. I like that type of upgrade. While I enjoyed it. I'm eager to go back and play 2016 and Eternal again. I really liked TDA's Doomguy. The actors in 2016 and the OST are hard to beat. Everything else TDA does better. I'm so use to the shield now.

An update to my previous post regarding my replay of Eternal: much to my surprise I think I prefer TDA. I encourage everyone who hasn't played Eternal since it's original release to go back-to-back as I'm doing, you might feel very differently coming off of the latest entry. Now I'm *really* curious how I'll feel about 2016 and if it will still be my overall favourite.

oh well this game made me broke my vanilla gameplay rule

i mean i usually just stick to defaults, just prefer it that way. but here I had to reduce the parry time to 1/5 from its default 3/5 value. at least the game is a bit more challenging now so I'm even having more fun

but i wish it just locked you to that 1/5 value if you played in nightmare difficulty. or at least defaulted to 1/5. even 1/5 is not that small of a window actually but still

-Dark ages desperately needs a patch giving players the option for a "vibrant" filter to bring back the color. Dark ages is waaaaaay too muted it looks dull as shit.
There is a setting under HDR calibration for HDR Saturation that may help, if you have HDR enabled.

So I beat the game the other night, good enough to go back and 100% everything. Done. I think objectively it's much better than how much I subjectively enjoyed it, tons more than Eternal but I guess I 'm just over FPS , to se ne vrati.

Nothing against this dev to be clear just I don't do EA. I'm not interested in game dev or seeing how the sausage is made so to speak so the concept is over my head. Also bought a couple EA games early on and was pissed every time when the finished game hit like four years later and I gave zero fucks lol.
It'll be worth it. And even after they add Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 it'll still be $25. Not to mention replayability with mutator and randomizer options. And of course Open Mod Support to enhance your experience or play User created Maps/Levels.

On mission 19. Game is getting a bit too long . There is not much variety to support 20+ hours imo. Also i came to a conclusion that the music sucks in this. Its like nonexistent, atleast thats how i feel about it

Any real OG Doom fan should like all 3 games of the rebooted franchise. All 3 are fantastic shooters IMO. Eternal is an example of what a good arena shooter should be. I'm an 80s gamer and to be honest, I've been around gaming longer than some and people who don't like Eternal really don't understand what makes a good designed FPS. 'Maybe' they could have done away with some of the platforming in Eternal, but seriously, I dare any other studio other than id to pull off a better fleshed out FPS.
I'm an 80's gamer as well (started off on the Coleco and went from there) and I ADORE the original Doom and Doom 2. I'm also a massive fan of Doom 64. I don't hate Eternal but I don't love it. It's ok. And claiming that people who don't like Eternal don't understand what makes a good designed FPS is just bullshit. It just wasn't as good as Doom 2016, it's certainly not as good as Dark Ages and the OG games and Doom 64 shit all over Eternal, in my (supposedly uneducated) opinion. Like what you like, but when you start proclaiming that people SHOULD like something but don't because they aren't as smart as I am is a silly argument to make. And yes, I'm not saying you're smarter than me, but to say myself and others like me who don't hold Eternal as this beacon of awesomeness don't understand what makes a good designed FPS is fucking retarded!

Never proclaimed that people should like Eternal, never proclaimed people aren't as smart for not liking Eternal, you obviously like putting words into people's mouths. My argument was people shitting on Eternal saying it's a bad game. I'm sorry, but people who inherently say it's a bad game is full of shit, just like you!

You did say that. Go read your post. And I am not saying Eternal is not a good game. I don't like it as much as 2016 or TDA. Spin it whatever way you like, but people who don't like Eternal know a hell of a lot about video games, hence why they don't like it as much as the FAR superior Doom 2016.

Finally found a gamerip of the remix version of Ancestral Beast that plays when you get the BFC and fight Komodo Champion after not being able to find it on the soundtrack.

It's fine to not like Eternal and prefer Doom 2016 more, but that's not what is happening here on GAF, people are just outright hating on it with no appreciation of it still being a very well designed game, they have an inability to still appreciate something whether they like it or not. It's just like the Last of Us 2, the story is controversial and has some flaws so the game is automatically a big pile of steaming shit with no appreciation that the game has some of the highest production values in presentation and gameplay. There are the Eternal haters camp and the Eternal lovers camp, the difference is, no one from the Eternal lovers camp is shitting on Doom 2016. Eternal haters are just shitting on the game regardless, it's game design execution is AAA tier. But unfortunately some gamers no fuck all about how games are actually made and can't think on any higher level other than 'I don't like it, the game is shit'.. Saying something is not your cup of tea and saying something is shit, are two different things. The hate Eternal gets is unwarranted. I'm all for people preferring Doom 2016 but there are so many toxic posts about Eternal implying it's one of the worst games ever made!

Just completed it. Really felt like level 21 &22 were out of order entirely. Like wtf?

Overall it may be my favorite doom game honestly. I'm going to replay 2016 and eternal before declaring it, but the second half of this game is just aces.

My major complaints as a ps5 pro player:
-Broken HDR
-Game color is too muted no matter what I do. It's just their art direction this time. They didn't want bright much of anything. Slayer green is now very muted for example.
-The game over a dozen times would take 10+ seconds to load. Happens in second half not first.
-When game loads it can go black screen with level actually loaded so when you get vision you're already dead. So even though you can't see yet you can move parry etc until the game TRULY finishes loading for player.
-Stupid acid floor shit from enemies felt always like cheap deaths.
-Hit boxes can be horse shit. Nowhere near an enemy shot and it counts it hitting. Plus bullets that track you is also horse shit.
-First half of game felt unnecessary. 11-22 is the game.
-Lastly and most importantly the game is blurry. I don't care what tech specs from geeks at digital foundry want to say, it looks 720p upscaled. Cinematics look great but in game it's just a blur.

—-

All that said the moment to moment gameplay, level design, exploration, story, and bosses were amazing. Music is middle of the road. Some great tracks but mostly forgettable. Mick is missed big time.

Overall score 8.5/10. In my mind I felt eternal was a 9 but I'm going to replay to see if that's nostalgia or not so my score for dark ages may change.

Fired up both eternal and 2016 on my ps5 to try out the first levels of each for initial impressions again compared to coming off dark ages.

To my surprise eternal played the slowest out the gate. 2016 felt perfect speed wise. Went back to dark ages and did 100% and 150% speed and boy is 150 awesome.

Visually dark ages is the worst looking one. Doom 2016 is a ps4 game and just the art style, use of color, lighting, etc made it pop more than dark ages.

On playing the other two I also realized how crucial glory kills really were to appreciating the enemies. Without the glory kills enemies in all 3 games are not very detailed because you're moving fast and the game tones down pixel count on them. While dark ages has glory kills to an extent I think they went too far in removal.

I would've preferred every last enemy in an encounter is a guaranteed close up beautiful animated glory kill with even more variety and variance in what happens than eternal.

id dropped the ball for visuals in this game bad.

3 crashes in 20 minutes on PC. Anyone else having issues like this? I've updated drivers and restarted the PC but it still happens. Super fucking annoying.
No crashes here 18 hours of playtime. Maybe trying to revert to older Graphics driver (the one before official Doom Drivers)
Anyways i will finish the game and wait for Path Tracing for my second playthrough. I hope path tracing patch will come out soon

Three things I want a modder to fix or as part of a QoL update:
-Auto-sprint on needs to have the shift-key be a walk button
-Remove the over the top landing earthquake sound effect whenever you jump (seriously getting on my nerves)
-The "hold-to-confirm" buttons need to be cast out into the sun and also when you die (and have lives remaining) it needs to just continue without needing to confirm a life usage. It's hilarious too as I've had numerous times where I misclicked or was holding D which made me click the no button which does not need you to hold to confirm, therefore put me back at the latest checkpoint.

Yup. Done some digging in event viewer and it's not really very conclusive. Having crashes in Helldivers 2 as well. Just running a memory diagnostic to make sure it's not RAM related, although I'm confident it won't be that.

If it's Nvidia drivers, I'll be a bit fucking annoyed because crashes before this have been extremely rare. Now it happens all the time on these two games.

Put just shy of 16 hours into the game and never crashed. However I'm using AMD and not Nvidia.
I'm kind of glad it seems to be an Nvidia thing as I've been thinking that perhaps my PC is fucked. However, it's really frustrating that Nvidia are so shit these days and that the last few driver releases have been god awful. Hoping they sort their shit out otherwise I might just sell my 3080, grab a 9070XT and swallow a loss of a few hundred quid just to play my games without any problems.

Yeah, I can understand that. I'm sorry you're dealing with that though man. I have been reading quite a bit about Nvidia driver issues the past week or so. There's no excuse for issues like that. But hopefully something improves soonly.

I don't think you can revert drivers for this - it wouldn't even let me start the game until I'd updated to the Doom 'game ready' one.

The game locked up three times at the exact same point for me the other day, when I picked up a certain weapon. Didn't think I'd be able to make any further progress but got past it on the fourth attempt.

I'm putting in a refund for this shit.

  • I didn't care for how much movement came into play with Eternal as who the fuck wants to platform in first person in a FPS game but this shit is braindead.
  • Half of the levels I've played you could probably just stand in place and get pretty far.
  • The mech sections are garbage and feel like shit. Just walk around and spam the punch button and since it's a mech it doesn't respond very well either (which I get but like it's fucking Doom it should feel responsive).
  • The flying parts are some of the worst sections in a game I've played since like fucking Lair on PS3. Lair is better then this.
  • The music isn't great and a disappointment compared to Mick Gordon's stellar work.
  • The story is a throwaway to the point where it's like why even bother.
  • Fucking color vomit everywhere. You've got red and green shit flowing at you constantly and it's a mess especially up against the grim dark hellscape.
  • The shield literally makes the game braindead as you can just hold the shield up the entire time if you want to absorb damage.
Edit: I'm being a bit hyperbolic, but I really just don't like the game and found it incredibly dull and boring to play. I'm not gonna edit my original wording though.

Thats some review thread level trolling in OT.

It's not even trolling. I just really don't like it.

Doom 2016 was amazing. I beat Eternal but disliked the platforming. This game is disappointing in almost every way for me.

It's fine if you like it but I don't. Not worth $70 in the slightest.
Its fine if you don't like it.

Your criticism has a lot of stuff that doesn't make any sense though. Thats why, trolling.

Which parts don't make any sense?

Maybe except soundtrack complaint. Its still good, but DE is better.

As someone that beat the campaign, I'm unsure of how the movement in this felt "braindead", did you play on a low difficulty or something? In my entire experience with the campaign it required/expected you to keep moving, much like 2016 and Eternal did. You also can't just hold up the shield the entire time as the shield can only take so much damage before it's placed on a cool down forcing you to retreat until you can use it again.

I played on normal.

I'm obviously being a bit hyperbolic so maybe a better phrase was "not engaging" as I generally just felt bored while playing it. Braindead is probably not the right word either.

I think a lot of my harsh feeling towards the game stems from the fact I was so excited for it and honestly didn't watch much about it because I was like oh I'm gonna play it no matter what so there's no point watching previews or trailers.

While I don't think the game is shit, - for me it's a good game, but below Eternal in the trilogy - I strongly agree with these 2 points.

The flying levels are a cool idea and pretty to look at and although the controls are good the shooting is poor, with perfect dodge, the slow mo and you're just shooting at static enemies with only optional flying enemies, but they don't fight back, very little challenge.

Agree with the difficulty as well, I'm an average player, really, but didn't die once and I'm at the final level.
This isn't necessarily so much a negative point as the game it's still fun, but after the half hay, the game for me became so easy. I know what others will say, turn up the difficulty, play with one hand, but I usually play on the default difficulty, I don't like artificial modifiers like enemy damage up and player damage down.

I played both 2016 and Eternal on default and they were much more challenging, especially Eternal.

Anybody having trouble switching weapons ? ( Pressing rb rapidly to change to previous weapon), maybe it's my controller, LT is already fucked and it sticks when i have to block with the shield so maybe it's just that.

Beat the game. It's a solid 8,5/10. Kinda agree with the soundtrack comments, it's not as good as the previous two.

Overall, enjoyed it greatly. You sort of enter the 'zone' in the final few chapters where you can dance around enemies and slaughter them at an amazing speed. The game really prepares you for it. It all flows pretty well. The pacing is very good in the sense that you don't get exhausted fighting waves upon waves of enemies. Just the right bit of exploration and intense combat. The flying sections were fun but I didn't like the mech ones.

The story and final boss were all well done. The fact that minions of hell treat you as some scary demi god was enough for me to be invested in the story. I loved all the weapons and mostly used the shield on the fodder enemies. Ravager is too good. The level design is great and you can literally find everything on your first playthrough itself if you take your time. I played the first few chapters on the PS5 and then ordered the PS5 pro and played the rest on it. What a night and day difference between the two consoles. It's really blurry on the PS5.

I kinda prefer this over Eternal. They obviously listened to the feedback and fixed the pacing. Eternal didn't give you any breathing room, just balls to the walls combat. Doom 2016 > TDA > Eternal.

I can understand your point of view, but I think the parry might be pretty similar to just switching a weapon, it's more a strategic choice than a reflex test. The low speed of the projectiles suggests that to me, anyway.

Though some of those melee attacks are quite difficult to judge, IMO.

If you have the Nvidia app installed, try uninstaling it. I was have regular crashes until I got rid of it, and have been problem free ever since.
