Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon |OT| Dark Scrolls

Damnit. Now I have to name my character. I always stress over this in games lol

Can we change our name later on the same save file?
What did everyone name their characters?
I named my redguard in oblivion Garth.

Well shit now I gotta play this now. Downloading and going in blind besides what I read when March Climber March Climber first started the thread.

I guess playing oblivion and skyrim recently will give me a baseline on Avalon. The term dark fantasy gets thrown around alot but I'm pretty excited to see what's going on here. Daedric quests are always my favorite so I'm hoping for shit like that.

I remember that little prick Mordred from Excalibur, the 80s movie. I wonder if you can be that bad? He always seemed to be the inspiration for Joffery on game of thrones.

Anyone playing on Xbox have performance issues? I'm not normally sensitive to stuff like this, but it's all over the place. Zooming in with the bow is the most egregious, it turns into a slideshow that makes aiming impossible.

You might have to tweak the graphics/performance in the settings a bit further than just selecting performance mode. They will continue to iron things out further in upcoming updates/patches.

Be sure to report the issue to their reddit, steam community, or discord.

Am I just bad, or is combat in the tutorial surprisingly difficult?
The enemies will hit hard depending on the difficulty. There is a parry system that makes it so that you don't take damage and instead they take stamina damage (and stamina depletion leads to a full stagger), but until you have a safer chance to practice parrying, I would suggest using the dodge feature earlier on and also running away from groups (or at least funneling them into smaller passages so that they line up instead of surround you).

This game is crazy, what the fuck.

I took a ton of screenshots but I'm not posting them because I don't want to ruin things, but holy shit what an insane blend of themes. Absolute perfection. I've never seen anything like this.

That King Arthur resurrection cutscene was metal as fuck, holy shit. KING OF KINGS

I havent played the 1.0 release version yet, Ill be hopping on that bad boy tonight.

But I played early access and got completely fucking stomped out in the tutorial area. And the first starter area right after that lol.

Like every single enemy borderline one-shotted me and I took 10 hits to kill them lol. If you pulled more than one mob at at time, you just died.

There were also some mages that would spam this homing bolt that I swear to god was undodgeable and did like 75% health damage.

It was freaking hard lol. I heard they adjusted the difficulty, so maybe its better now... but yeah I got murked in the tutorial too lmao.

Fucking hell it keeps getting better.

The very first NPC I talked too after the starting area is great and happens to be a merchant.

Only complaints so far is the performance in regards to some screen-tearing and minor frame drops.

So there isn't "Modes" to pick from like Quality and Performance. Instead you can choose what resolution to play (nine options from 1080 to 4k) as and then pick a target FPS (30, 60, for Unlimited).
Not sure if 1260p and 1440p are much different in performance, but I'm currently playing at the former. Playing on PS5 Pro.

I've replayed the prologue like 5 times just for that whole Introduction. Perfection

Man this game is pretty good, just put a couple of hours in to it.

With Avowed, Oblivion Remastered, and now this, its nice seeing some Elder Scrolls style games getting some love.

Dont have a clue whats going on with the story so far but its certainly intruiging. And that Geiger style archictecture in that other dimension thing kind of caught me off guard, wasnt expecting it.

What a nice surprise.

Yeah that scene with arthuro goes pretty hard.

The art design and themes are immediately more captivating than bethesda rpgs, at least for me.

Like the scene where you see
the 2 giants turning the giant mechanism, like cmon 🕺

Is the game fully fleshed out? And how is the performance, would it run decently on a Geforce 3060?
Its quite demanding for how it looks. I had to run DLSS at 90% to keep 60fps at 1080p max settings on a 3070 once I got to Avalon..

With a few dropped settings, and a more aggressive DLSS setting (the game uses percentages for DLSS, not quality, balanced etc), you should be fine.

I am very impressed with the art direction. I don't mind weaker textures and rough edges here and there if the style and lighting are cool.

On base PS5, I do have screen tearing and stutters that are unpleasant. The autosave also hiccups. I do hope they are working on these things.

The menus are clunky in design. Not a fan, but I'm not sure how they could optimize.

Photo Mode, at lease on console, is weak. And pressing the controller screenshot button brings up the pause menu so that option is out. It is a cool looking game and I am a total game photographer so it sucks.

Does anyone have a link to the official Discord where we can report stuff? On PS5 when I sheathe my weapons, press Touch Pad for the character menu, then back out to gameplay, it unsheathes my weapons. I am not a fan of that and would like to report it, especially if there ends up being a quest where you have to keep your weapons sheathed. They are rare but they do happen, and I'd hate to fail it and suffer consequences if I for some reason decide to go into the menu or otherwise accidentally press the Touch Pad.

Has anyone chosen all of the negative dialogue choices? Does it actually matter aside from whatever nasty reaction you get from NPC's? Is that banter worth it with some characters?

Interesting. I've never seen that many visual and performance options on the PS5. Very PC-like.

Getting a really bad visual glitch when the sun is bright/not obstructed by clouds and you look in that general direction. The screen will flash constantly.

Screen tearing seems unrelated to the performance too. Changing resolution has no effect. Oddly the only spot I noticed the screen tearing is roughly 4/5 of the way down the screen specifically. Also noticed far less screen tearing when inside caves.

Vsync doesn't seem to work on PS5 Pro. 1440p, 60fps target, v sync on and it tears like buggery. Performance isn't that great either. Would have expected it run flawlessly at such a low resolution but it doesn't. Hopefully they're going to improve it going forward.

Just tested again and the screen tearing and the visual bug with the sun both go away if you limit it to 30fps. VSync on and off does make a difference as the tearing is much worse with it off.

The third person animations and the mode itself is a pretty big disappointment. i don't recommend using it and it's good that the developers give you a warning.

Let's hope the game is mod friendly and we get some in the near future to improve the experience

Downloaded the PC demo after reading impressions here.

Wondering if the main game is this janky? Graphic bugs, and stuttering. I thought I saw where the demo is v0.9, so maybe it got cleaned up for 1.0?

Yes, the demo is an older build. The main game still has some jank to it, but less than the demo. They will continue to update this game with updates and patches over time, especially now that it has officially released on consoles.

Been really busy training people at work so I guess this news has me wanting to wait for some patches. I've owned it for a while so I'm in no hurry. I really want to experience it in 3rd person.

Two more bugs:
- When using the Stash only the first item per tab when switching showing item info. As soon as you move to the next item the info section doesn't show.
- After you close the menu your character will draw his weapons even if they were put away before hand.

Looks good but based on impressions, it sounds like the game still needs some time in the oven. I'd rather wait until its in a better state because I learned my lesson last year after Stalker 2 released in an incomplete state.... didn't even finish it and have no desire to go back.

The art in the board game was amazing. The lore was really great as well. Awaken realms has some of the best fantasy/sci fi art out there. Their games all look amazing.

I really recommend everyone to temper their expectations because the game has some problems and it's quite buggy as well. I understand there is hunger for Elder Scrolls types of games but this is nowhere near as competent or as good as those games. The combat is really, really janky and enemy AI is not great. I think the music, art and vibes are awesome, but the gameplay itself is serviceable at best. This is literally the definition of eurojank.

I think developers should've delayed this 1.0 version and make it more polished in general

Overall there is some jank, but let's not pretend that the combat or AI in Elder Scrolls games is good. The core combat here has much more depth than Elder Scrolls. I'm not far enough into the game to determine the variety of spells and how they will work in combat so can't comment on that yet. AI wise it's essentially the same. Super basic and serves its purpose.

For sure needs some patches for help with performance issues.

Yeah there's a lot of stuttering. Enjoying it so far but I've died a ton. Desperate peasants are killing me in the 1st village area.

The ai is...ok. Those same peasants hit some invisible wall.and go running back the way they came if I get too far. Might wait a minute for a patch

Performance is kind of whack for sure. I have a 4070 with DLSS enabled and graphic settings recommended on medium (which is a big wtf on itself) and there's no reason for a tiny dungeon area to stutter.

Also never seen a game use DLSS implementation with a percentage-based slider in the settings menu.

"How much DLSS do you want? 40%? 50%?" What does that even mean, lol.

DLSS has always been percentage based under the hood but it's rarely exposed to the end-user in this way. Anyway, percentage breakpoints are as follows:

  • Quality - 66.7%
  • Balanced - 58.0%
  • Performance - 50.0%
  • Ultra Performance - 33.3%

It's the percentage it's upscaling from. Higher % = better quality, less performance.

I 100% knew not to bother with console version after trying the demo on PS5. Knew it'd be a shit show. Buying it there anyway to support them (thanks gamepass)

Stutters here and there with 5080 but nothing intolerable.
