This deal is getting worse all the time...

Just joking, but this news is disappointing, even if it's not surprising. I'm just really curious to see how much Tesla will be charging for all of the additional options on the Model 3.

Weak. But expected. I wonder how much the option will cost. Or whether we can pay for a week subscription when road tripping.

I would hope that Tesla allows you to tie a credit card to your car and if you go to a super charger it just bills you whatever the going rate is for electricity plus some sort of maintenance fee for the super charger.

If I was to choose between a higher priced 3 that included free for life supercharger access, or a cheaper one without it, I'd go for the latter every time. Road trips are not a regular thing.

Expected it and I think it was fairly clear from the presentation. There aren't any on Vancouver Island so I may pass unless they build a few. Would still love to have pay per use access if I want to go on a road trip though.

A Model 3 with all the worthwhile options will basically be the same price as a Model S that you can get now

As far as the design goes, the front needs something... not necessarily a grill, but SOMETHING. Maybe think out of the box and put an array of LEDs there for enhanced night time visibility or vents for the HVAC system

lol

A base model s, with no autopilot, dual motor, or extra options, is $71,500. That's a $36K difference. Factor the federal tax credit if you want, and that's still $30K in some crazy options you're adding.

WHAT

What? No way. You'll get a dual (non performance) motor with a bigger battery and autopilot for less than 50 before incentives.

Ok, I feel a little better.

The option used to cost $2500. I'd rather have $2500 instead of super charger access. I'd only use it for road trips, frankly.

guys, i figured out who twinturbo is:

Finally, it is worth noting that the blogger who fabricated this issue, which then caused negative and incorrect news to be written about Tesla by reputable institutions, is Edward Niedermeyer. This is the same gentle soul who previously wrote a blog titled “Tesla Death Watch,” which starting on May 19, 2008 was counting the days until Tesla’s death. It has now been 2,944 days. We just checked our pulse and, much to his chagrin, appear to be alive. It is probably wise to take Mr. Niedermeyer’s words with at least a small grain of salt.

furthermore:

Elon Musk ‏@elonmusk 47m47 minutes ago

Of greater concern: 37 of 40 suspension complaints to NHTSA were fraudulent, i.e. false location or vehicle identification numbers were used

Elon Musk ‏@elonmusk 44m44 minutes ago

Would seem to indicate that one or more people sought to create the false impression of a safety issue where none existed. Q is why?

Either the NHTSA is in the tank for Tesla, seriously doubtful, or people are purposefully trying to spread FUD about Tesla. Its almost like they have financial interest in doing so...

Tesla is the first American motor company to have been founded and not gone bankrupt in over 80 years. The established players aren't used to a new challenger appearing and you better believe they desperately want Tesla to die, because Tesla is an existential threat to the fossil fuels industry, the combustion engine industry, and the automobile dealerships in the US.

If you've ever seen movies like Syriana and Traffic you have an idea of the kind of entrenched wealth and power which opposes Tesla. If they actually do successfully launch the Model 3 and sell a lot of them, you can believe there will be incredible amounts of pressure applied by powerful interests to try and destroy the company and it's people.

1st self-driving car death reported involving Tesla S

"What we know is that the vehicle was on a divided highway with Autopilot engaged when a tractor trailer drove across the highway perpendicular to the Model S," Tesla said in a statement.
"Neither Autopilot nor the driver noticed the white side of the tractor trailer against a brightly lit sky, so the brake was not applied," the statement said.

Very unfortunate accident.

Does autopilot only rely on cameras?
No it relies on an array of cameras, radar and sonars but it's designed to only apply emergency braking to avoid rear-end collisions. It can't detect lateral intrusion of a vehicle in your lane, and that's why it frequently reminds the driver to keep its hands on the steering wheel and to pay attention to the road.

Do you mean from the side? It looks like it can detect it from the side. This is the video the guy that just died put up on Youtube earlier this year.

That's a different situation. Here's what Mobileye, the manufacturer of the system, says:
Dan Galves, Mobileye's Chief Communications Officer, issued the following statement:

"We have read the account of what happened in this case. Today's collision avoidance technology, or Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) is defined as rear-end collision avoidance, and is designed specifically for that. This incident involved a laterally crossing vehicle, which current-generation AEB systems are not designed to actuate upon. Mobileye systems will include Lateral Turn Across Path (LTAP) detection capabilities beginning in 2018, and the Euro NCAP safety ratings will include this beginning in 2020."

I think its 360 degrees sonars can detect when someone is attempting to dangerously merge into you lane but cannot predict if a veichle is about to cross the road at an intersection, for example.
But there's already a dedicated thread http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1241166

Found this in my inbox:

We appreciate your support and excitement for Model 3. Thank you for making a reservation.

It has come to our attention that some Canadian customers who placed their Model 3 reservation with an American Express card were overcharged due to an incorrect exchange rate and foreign transaction fee. We are reaching out today because you were effected by this mistake. To correct this error, you will be refunded $240 USD equivalent to $300 CAD from Tesla within the next 7 days*. The status of your Model 3 reservation will not be effected by this adjustment.
After conversion I got roughly 320CAD. So effectively I put less than 1K CAD for the pre-order.

Thanks Tesla!

Really?

Car and Driver sampled a preproduction model and had nice things to say about it.

The Bolt is a fine EV but I’d pick a Model 3 over it any day of the week. Hell I’d pick a Tesla car over a Chevy car based on company principles alone. Chevy had an EV decades ago but instead of leading the industry they caved to the oil lobbyist pressure and not only shitcanned their EV program but actively worked against the electric car industry as well. Fuck Chevy.

I dont know why you people respond anywhere. At this point he's either a paid shill for Chevy, a paid shill against Tesla or a troll. Hes not going to respond to you or anyone else that quoted him.

I too would take any Tesla model over any Chevy model unless I got the Chevy for free.

he posted that C&D likes it and you're attacking him.

you guys have fun in your $30k Tesla. i hope youre not naive enough to think it'll be anything like the tesla S, and that it'll be far better than a Bolt.

Hang out with Steve.
Nice job Chevy! The Bolt's definitely beating Tesla to the punch with a great range. It's a nice car & I hope they sell a ton of them. Competition is a great thing!

Now the ball's in Tesla's court. We have another full year (at least) before the first Model 3's start arriving. How will they respond?

I predict they will respond by continuing to work on the Model 3 and ignoring the Bolt.
