I think I've read that getting rid of rearview mirror would increase drag enough to give an increase in range by about 2-3%. Unfortunately it is still law pretty much everywhere that a car must have rearview mirror in order to be driven on a road or else I'm sure they would have gotten rid of them.

Edit. I've seen some estimates at up to 5% greater range. Plus the cameras could virtually eliminate blind spots. A bunch of companies are currently petitioning the US government to allow side cameras in place of mirrors.

Oh wow, this definitely changes things. That's too bad. I wonder if they'll still have cameras for the blindspot issue, at least.

Intense competition will hamper Tesla's profitability. I am sure Tesla wants "competition"...

Porsche is going to slay the Model S on the high end, and BMW, Mercedes, etc. will slay Tesla on the lower end if Tesla does not move ahead with a Model 3 quickly. Issues with Tesla are that they are bleeding a lot of cash whilst other big manufacturers can subsidize their EV foray with profits from other ventures, and that they are only competitive in select markets (North American, UK and fringe markets like Scandinavia). They are nowhere in Germany, for instance, where customers are loyal to local brands.

Sometimes competition can be good for a company if it expands the market. If more companies come out with electric car, they will also invest in the infrastructure to charge them, which in turns benefits all the players in the market.

Competition isn't necessarily a race to the bottom.

Really not feeling the looks vs say, an Evoque or an F-Pace. Also, I could get a Range Rover Sport for the same price... no sale.

I am still quite tempted by the normal Tesla though. Just as a city car.

After dealing with many production delays over the past couple of years, Tesla's finally ready to launch the Model X, its highly anticipated crossover. Later this evening, the company will hold an event at a factory in Fremont, California, where it is expected to make the latest member of the Tesla family official. Yes, there's a lot we know about this electric vehicle already, but tonight we'll likely learn details that were previously unknown -- such as availability and how far it can go on a charge. The announcement is set for 8PM PT/11PM ET, and you can watch it live on Tesla's website.

Unless you're the target audience and you actually think they will be awesome.

I am part of the target audience and REALLY wanted one but the gullwing doors are a deal breaker.

edit: Simply because of the practicality of having them in NYC.

But the whole point is practicality. It gives you complete access to the rear seats. Imagine how much easier it'll be to put a kid in a child seat instead if the door is completely open including part of the roof.

it can open like a traditional gullwing door but it can also open up vertically and then extend out. I think they very cool and practical and I'm part of the target audience :) and I'm pretty sure they have sensors so when the door extends up it won't hit the ceiling of your garage.

Here it is opening like a gullwing door

The gull wings don't articulate anymore? That was part of what made them good for smaller spaces previously.

Now they just hinge at the top and stay rigid, so the swing is much wider.

My guess is the had water proofing or reliability problems on the articulation. I would have ditched them in that case :/

Wait until the reveal. I'd guess they work at least as well as the prototype.
In what way?

A single hinge point will by necessity swing out wider than the articulating model. Still a ton of head clearance reaching in (and as a parent putting kids in car seats in normal cars sucks ass), but harder to open with a car next to you than the other design.

Clearance above is a wash with the same top panel width.

Would be interesting to see a van style slide door with a little top panel that could optionally open for head clearance. (Musk will never do a sliding door because of the track it would require.)
