Two factors that stop me from jumping on board with Tesla:

1. The cost and vehicle availability in Australia.

2. Lack of charging stations down under.

Pretty much, but if this was in my price range I'd be all over it. Still really nice, after the price comes down stations will be everywhere and range will be better.

edit: 257 mile range is really nice

Damn Elon is a terrible public speaker... I'll check in on this tomorrow. It's painful to watch.

Meh he's a billionaire, he's proven he's companies and products are actual game changers. Doesn't really bother me he stutters and isn't super engaging.

I want a Model X!!!

I don't understand the appeal of an electric car that cost this much.

I thought the main point of switching to electric was to save gas money. (Not the only point but still)

did anybody know any of those people that got those cars ?

The cars first delivered are all founder's editions. Venture capitalists and friends of Musk. Not available to the general public. The signature editions are delivered next, which are for people that first put down reservation money.

More the point is to not use any gas. It is to be self sufficient and not contribute as significantly to a carbon footprint.

My car has cost me more than $6500 in fuel and about $2500 in maintenance and it is 5 years old. The total, including the purchase price would be around $35,000. I could have bought a Nissan Leaf for that.\BTW the maintenance has been primarily things that electric cars don't even have.

I'm waiting for the Model 3 but may get a Kia Soul EV or next gen Leaf as my next car.

That's actually the exact notion that Tesla is trying to dispel: that electric cars can't be anything more than ultra-cheap metal boxes on wheels that are fugly but at least it's cheap/good for the environment!

A big reason why they're not cheaper is because nobody's making them. There's no car manufacturer that is putting purely electric cars like these out on the market and sell them as actually desirable luxury sedans/crossovers. They're meant to compete with the higher-end vehicles as a whole, and that includes the high-tech/luxury factor as well. They're arguing that there's way more reasons to buy a car of this kind other than "it's electric and will save on gas money". Plus the pure driving speed and acceleration you can get out of these is insane. Once they show 1) it's possible to create these kinds of driving experiences and 2) that there's a market for this, the plan is for more car manufacturers to jump in and drive up demand for batteries that will make electric cars far more affordable to buy.

And besides, the Model 3 that is supposed to come out at...some point...should be the perfect balance between affordability and not driving a fugly "enviro-friendly" car.

My wife and I just bought a new car. Were in the market for something cross-over sized, and would have definitely bought the Model X, but the gull-wing doors killed it for us. It's great that they can open in tight spaces, but they also mean you can't have a roof rack, which means the kayaks have no place to go.

I suppose this is good for the soccer moms, though.

Worst presentation ever. Musk was so akward and nervous, but I can't wait for my Model X to arrive. Pre-order number 18,000 and something, it should be ready sometime this decade.

He is always like that. His brain goes so fast words can't keep up.

Love the idea that you can jam your ridiculously expensive car into a tiny space and get out fine only for the other car owners to come back and slam their conventional doors into it.

was thinking the exact same thing. people with $100,000 cars do NOT park their cars next to other cars. not like this, anyway.

Maybe that's where the Bioweapon Defence System comes in?

He does stammer and change topics mid sentence a lot. Sometimes hard to follow.

He should get some public speaking training. Look at the very early Steve Jobs keynotes vs the later ones, that`s the difference training makes.

But aren't roof racks available for this car?

I can't summon any interest in a car that costs more than my annual salary. I'm sure they'll sell all of them, but I hope the Model 3 is the mass market car they're promising.

I read somewhere that roofracks are available. My guess is that with a roofrack the 'roof'-section of the door stays down.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should, nor use it all the time. Just how a sportscar can do ~200mph, but most of them out on the street today are doing 100 tops.

Holy hell, that is like semi truck levels of torque.

I can't wait till Tesla makes a car I can afford. All the little tech details and features just sound so good.

I prefer to say "I can't wait till the day I can afford a Tesla" :)

Meh. For the money, give me a Corvette Z06 and the rest of the money in gas, tires and track days.

Make the most of it before California and the rest of the regulators ruin it for the rest of us. Thanks, VW, now we're doomed to self driving pillmobiles.
