So after having owned netbooks as my primary computers for the past 4 years, i'm in the market for a real laptop.

I want something that's powerful. I won't be doing much gaming but if i could run some games that'd be nice!

My budget is $600-800. I am willing to extend my budget.

Thanks in advance!

edit: i can only order it from Best Buy.

Thinking about buying a laptop. Problem is: I'd need win 7 (x64) on it and now every laptop seems to come win 8. (Because I'm not sure about adobe CS4 suite compatibility with win8 and I can't really risk on it since I don't have the money to upgrade to newer versions).

I'd like of course to avoid buying outdated (hardware-wise) models which naturally have win7.
And I'd avoid "obscure" brands because I'd like a reliable europen-wide warranty service.

My budget would be 600-700€ (could eventually stretch to 800) - Italy here.

What to do? Maybe some brands ship laptops with win 8 preinstalled but with the optional inclusion of a win 7 dvd?

Thanks
Link me to some Italian laptop retailers.

As far as Windows, you;ll be on the hook for buying a copy of Windows 7 yourself.
I realize I got recommendations and I never got a chance to thank the people who responded, but I've continued looking since the price was somewhat high for me. $1000 dollars was the maximum I could spend, but I preferred lower. Sorry of that was unclear.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DKFFLMY/?tag=neogaf0e-20

I found this laptop and it seems to be pretty good at a cheap price. Can anyone tell me if there's anything wrong with it? Will it make a good gaming laptop?

Also, a friend of mine is also looking for a laptop

  • Country: US
  • Usage: Movies mostly
  • Budget: $1000 - $1500
  • Misc: She wants it to be very responsive, she wants a long battery life, lightweight, and a 500GB harddrive

For you: No, that isn't good at all. This is much, much better.

For her: Sager NP7330.

Yeah just dropping some questions here. As I'm not to tech savvy I wondering if this laptop is good and what games I can possibly play. the specs are
CPU: Intel core i7 3635qm
VRAM: AMD HD 8770M
MEMORY: 8GB GDDR3

I'm enjoying it so far but of course it get's a bit hot. I bought a fan but I'm not satisfied with it. Are there any laptop coolers you guys recommend?

Thanks fellas and I'm sorry if I'm coming off as kinda dumb!
Are you having second thoughts? How much did you pay for the laptop, and are you beyond the return period?

Cooler: The Zalman NC2000 has been an industry standard for years, and is relatively cheap,

One more thing: what screen size and resolution are you looking for in this machine?

I'm looking for a laptop to use for notes and presentations for school. I'm on a very tight budget and I can't really spend more than $350-400. I have a great desktop, so the laptop doesn't have to be extremely powerful or anything. Anybody have any ideas? I'm a bit worried about build quality at such a low cost.

Have you looked into a netbook? There are some pretty good Acer Netbooks such as this one if you only want it for notes and presentations. It has the plus of excellent portability and battery life as well.

I finally settled on a Sager 8295 with an 8970m from XoticPC for $1454. Standard everything except the upgraded GPU and an Intel® Dual Band AC 7260 instead of the stock wireless card. Really excited and will post some updates when it arrives. Big thanks to everyone that offered help, it all pushed me to research more and consider my full alternatives. I changed from the MSI 2OC due to my want for an AMD gpu besides an Nvidia due to the type of programs I'm running on it besides games. Curse Nvidia for nerfing its Geforce line just to sell its Quadro.

Are there any Haswell laptops out there with Windows 7?

Only custom built machines.

In that range, I'd go with an ASUS. Reason being, even their cheapest laptops come with 2 years of warranty + 1 year of accidental. You just don't get that kind of security from other brands.

Something that annoys me about laptops are aftermarket batteries. If you buy that is the exact same shape, it might not be recognized by the mobo. I've been foiled several times now by online sellers, the batteries matched my laptop model number but still were not compatible.

Having read the OP im looking for a bit of guidance.

I'm a UK-Gaffer who has just moved to the Isle of Man for a year to work, i've not owned a laptop for over a year now so im looking to get back into the swing of things, but saying that i've never really been that clued up on laptop/pc specs beyond understanding the basics, and i've never been a massive PC gamer.

Budget: Don't really have one, if it does the business then i'll buy it.

Usage: Work & Gaming - Work is straight forward to cover and gaming-wise I want a really good machine that will take me into next gen if possible?

As i'm not very clued up I lean towards the likes of Alienware which are basically good to go and will do the job, but the rumblings around a lack of value for money does put me off and if I could get a better machine for the same price then thats what I want!

Any help would be much appreciated.

You can do better than Alienware, trust me. Plus they look pretty ugly. I always used to laugh when a student at my university came to class with those giant Alienware laptops.

Anyways, give us some stuff to work with. What Screen size do you want? Do you want it with or without an optic disc drive? And what are some of the retailers you would buy it from?

In regards to screen size, I would probably go for 17" upwards, as I want a decent size screen because it'll be in my apartment 90% of the time and im a bit of a comfy couch gamer. I'll be fully digital courtesy of Steam so an optic disc drive isn't needed and in regards to retailers I don't have any preference, I purchase a lot from Amazon but with me being in the Isle of Man any online retailer would be good.

It's been almost 2 month since I have my MSI GT70 dragon edition 2 and seriously best laptop I ever owned.

What's the difference between the normal and the dragon edition? Only difference on their site is the new paint and mini display port.

Overheat is right, I took a look at a few online stores and the MSI GT70 is the best. It includes an optic drive but most laptops at that size with such specs have it. Amazon has the Dragon Edition 2 for 3k. Laptop direct also has the Dragon Edition 2 Extreme for the same price and the regular edition for 2.2k but it seems that there are negative reviews for site.

Not really looking for a gaming laptop, but rather a laptop that would complement a gaming desktop for school.

I will be buying in Canada, but I suppose I could go to America to buy it.
$600-$800
Max size of 15"
I"m going to university to study engineering, not entirely sure what kinds of programs I might need my laptop to run, but I do also have a gaming desktop at home (I'll be staying home for school). If I ever need a computer to do my homework I'd probably do it on my desktop anyway.

Any recommendations? I've found this ( http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/prod...241528be776cbc69a135632en02&SearchPageIndex=1) which seems to be about what I'm looking for, but It's sold out and I can't find it anywhere else.

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with Origin PC laptops? They seem to be nice, but GAF impressions are appreciated.

I'm looking at the EON15-S as a living room laptop, one I can use when I'm watching my son and he's watching his cartoons. (My MBP doesn't really work too well for that).

Around 15-16 inches. Screen resolution? Doesn't matter. :)

Well, the Best Buy only stipulation really limits things. You're guaranteed to pay more for less.

Can you afford this?

You can certainly find cheaper gaming laptops, but you won't get anything near Alienware's build quality from the other brands. Just something to keep in mind.

The MSI GT70 is the next in line for recommendation. Please skip the Dragon Edition though.

Looking for a school/gaming laptop and I'm kind of leaning towards this. I have a budget of $600-800 and the min requirements is a i5, 6 gigs of ram, and a card that can run the newer games on medium/high. Any other good recommendations?

Edit:

I'm in the USA, 13-17" min. display. Forgot to add those in :l
Nah, that Lenovo will barely game on Low. You should go with the $819 model here.

Origin puts a custom panel on Clevo laptops and then inflates the price heavily. This is the same laptop, minus the custom shell. Just something to think about.

Yea, before deciding on just going with Sager, I ran into Best Buy and couldn't find anything with a decent video card for gaming. Didn't even see one with the 765M, which is what I ended up with.

Unless your local store happens to have a system, you're not getting much for the money. Just extra ram really.

I'm really digging the new Alienware 14. I checked one out at microcenter and really liked it. The screen is small since I'm usually on my 27" 1440p, but the system was really nice, and actually not as heavy or bulky as I thought, only 6.1lbs, compared to the MSI GS70 which is 5.75lb.

I'm torn now, lol.

Alright I'm looking for a laptop for my sister boyfriend who want one for school

Country: Purchasing in the US
Budget:around $1000
Size: 15 inches
Usage:It mostly for school but he would like to play most game
Misc: he would like if the screen is touchscreen

any help would be helpful :)

The AW14 is really nice. I couldn't fault you for taking it. Just make sure you get the 1080p IPS option.

Ask him whether he'd rather have the touchscreen, or the maximum gaming power that fits his budget.

If the laptop I am wanting to get isn't a desktop replacement (I've got a brand new desktop that's amazing) but want it for gaming, am I really going to unhappy with the 770m as opposed to the 780m? That price jump is pretty huge.

The 780M is for people without a gaming desktop. It's a full GTX 680.

Depending on the GPU specs of your desktop, i want to question why you'd even spend for a GTX 770M.

No its not it's more of a 660ti or 670 because of its lower clock speed.

My desktop is a 3770k OC to 4.4
I'm running 2 GTX 770s SLI.

This would be my living room gaming/maybe Steam Big Picture mode on the tv.

If the 765 would be adequate then I will go with that. I figured at least a 770m for running 1080p with high settings and 40+ FPS in most games.

Hey guys, I'm wondering what you guys could recommend me.

Country: USA (for the moment)

Budget: 1500 max (incl taxes, etc)

Size: 13-14. May go up to 15 depending on size of the machine.

Usage: 80% of the work I'll be doing is moving around and typing. So it has to have a really good, comfortable keyboard. I won't be doing a substantial amount of gaming, likely it will be limited to steam indie games and League of Legends/Dota 2/CS:GO/Minecraft and the like.

Other Requirements Must have a high-res screen. It must be 1080p at least. Prefer 8gb RAM but it's not a make or break. Prefer it not to be a behemoth of a machine in order to cart around.

I've been looking myself but I can't seem to find anything that's really taken my fancy. The closest I've found is maybe a Zenbook Prime. I tried one out and the keyboard is really nice as well. The Thinkpad X1 Carbon has perhaps the nicest keyboard I've tried on a laptop but unfortunately it has a low res screen.

i'm talking specs, not clocks. It's so easy to overvolt the GTX 780M and overclock beyond GTX 680 clocks, I just don't even bother typing out the downclocked part anymore.

Well I definitely don't mean to discourage you from getting what you need.

So let's break them down:

GTX 770M 192-bit, 3GB GDDR5, 960 shaders, Core/Memory 811MHz/1000MHz

GTX 765M 128-bit, 2GB GDDR5, 768 shaders, Core/Memory 850MHz/1000MHz

Then I looked at Notebookcheck's 765M page, and went down to the gaming benchmarks, Ultra settings only. Here's how much faster the 770M tested in some of the newest games:

Saints Row IV - 25.7fps vs 35.9fps, +40%
The Bureau: XCOM Declassified - 15.5fps vs 24.3fps, +57%
Splinter Cell: Blacklist - 18.4fps vs 27.1fps, +47%
Dota 2 - 47.2fps vs 59.8fps, +25%
Metro: Last Light - 18fps vs 24fps, +33%
BioShock Infinite - 24fps vs 30fps - 24%
StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm - 35fps vs 49fps, +39%

So the 770M absolutely crushes its little brother, no contest.

Those are some good specs. I'm worried about the quality of the trackpad and the keyboards after a bit of research. Unfortunately those things are paramount. Gaming is a secondary concern of mine at best. I'm starting to get the feeling that there really isn't much out there for me at the moment.

For me I have a gaming PC, but I got the 780m because I wanted to game in settings where moving a PC around isn't possible (travel, visiting family, in my recliner, etc).

I totally would have have went 765 or 770 if I could upgrade later like my desktop, but since that isn't possible I went to the high end instead of mid-range like I do on my desktop.

So i received my clevo W230ST today and wow its really nice! I can play pretty much any game my desktop also plays ( GTX560ti i5 3750k). the only thing im worried about is temperatures. they hit the mid 90's when gaming and that sets off alarm bells to me. has anyone got any ideas how to reduce temps ( I can only think of applying arctic silver 5 to the cpu and gpu) im all ears.

but apart from that i really recommend it the setup i got was.
i7-4700MQ
8gb DDR3 (2x4gb)
GTX 765M
1TB hybrid HDD

and it cost me £800
a good way to cut cost is to order without windows then install it yourself (i have dreamspark acess due to being a student) that knocks £80 off the price right away.

I wound up ordering the MSI GT60-20D-026US. The price point for what you get is really nice, and it took me most of today to decide that at that price I felt the 780m was worthwhile.

Thanks for everyone's advice, I'll post pics when it gets in this weekend.

I just had an MSI GT70 20D-064US (at the $1,884.98 Amazon price) delivered to me this morning, after much deliberation. Thanks to Amazon Prime i could overnight it for $3.99, which made the impulse decision much easier.

Impressions: Keyboard is the best I've ever experienced on a laptop, just a pleasure to type on, unlike the Clevo P170HM I'm retiring. The Dynaudio speakers are also very impressive. haven't done any gaming yet, as I need to install this 960GB SSD and go a clean install first.

Good to know! For now, I'm keeping it stock, but in a few weeks I'll probably buy a second 128 msata and then stripe them for all that speed and space. Now, do I keep my MBP or sell it (it is a nice machine, just not an amazing gaming laptop).

I was extremely close to purchasing an Alienware 17 from CUK. What put me off was the fact that i couldn't extend to warranty, beyond a single year. They are a reputable dealer though.

Couldn't you use Squaretrade for extended warranty

I'm leaning heavily towards a Sony Vaio Pro 13' - great form factor, latest haswell processor, 1080p screen and a great keyboard. The only thing holding me back is that I've read a few reviews that say that the wireless range is really short compared to other laptops.

Sigh.

Hey,

I'm looking for a working laptop(3dsmax, unity, photoshop) where I can also do my gaming on so I can retire my older desktop and save some space in my house.

location: europe (holland)
budget: 800 - 1100euros
I'm looking for at least a 15inch screen so I can work at the office(1920reso pref), but will keep my audio/screen setup at home for gaming, so I'm not so bothered about speakers.
an ssd would be great for working faster, and a higher end videocard for 3dsmax and gaming. at least 8 (but pref 16gb) ram for my programs.

I was looking into Lenovo but after reading a (dutch) guide, I was looking at Medion Erazer X7825 which is a little too high for my budget.

any ideas?

So. I am looking at laptops for school (that can play games well enough to get by), and didn't feel like making a thread.

My price range is 300-500$ probably.

Thing is that I am going to be student teaching over the next few semesters so durability and portability are issues, and I would like to stay cheap, but not so cheap that I will need to upgrade again in the next year or two.

I don't see the need for a touch screen, but I am not opposed to them either.

A couple that caught my eye:

Worried that 17 inch screen will be a bit large for school.

Cheaper end.

I also get 15% all laptops at Target, but I am not sure if any are decent, and the majority seem to use AMD processors.

Target laptops on sale

Thoughts? Suggestions? I really don't know a whole lot about laptops.

I was looking at a surface rt but the OS is just too restrictive for me.

For the same price I can get this

http://www8.hp.com/nz/en/products/laptops/product-detail.html?oid=5399212#!tab=features

Would this be sufficient for just browsing, and perhaps SNES & PS1 emulation?

That is an extremely weak laptop, but how much can it take to emulate SNES?

Last Time I posted, I was going to buy this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834312834

But then I saw this:

I know the i7 on the Ebay one is weaker(not by much but still weaker) and refurbished, but this guy max the spec that laptop for $50 more...wondering If I should get that or go with Newegg one...
I don't think 24GB SSDs are worth $50.

I looked up the specs of the Medion, and at 1200 Euros it's hard to argue against. Below that, I'd look into the MSI GE60 or Lenovvo Y510p.

If you link me to some of your local computer websites, I'll gladly take a look.

This is the beat you'll do in your price range, and its gaming power is minimal. I can only promise 720p gaming in current gen games.

irresponsible vagina leak
I have no idea where to find decent looking bags for the MSI Dragon Edition 2.0. Any idea of a site that might be nice for that?
