I have no idea where to find decent looking bags for the MSI Dragon Edition 2.0. Any idea of a site that might be nice for that?

Guess it depends on what you are looking for in a bag.

I'm a messenger bag guy (I've only used messenger bags for about 15 years). If that interests you, check out:

http://www.timbuk2.com/tb2/ - They have been around a long time. They make some great bags, and their prices for customs isn't insane.

http://www.chromeindustries.com/us/en/ - I know some people swear by these, but I've never used them.

http://reloadbags.gostorego.com/ - This is swanky. ReLoad is out of Philly, and they make everything in Philly. They cost a bit more than the others, but they wil last you forever. They can do any custom work you want as well.

Outside of messenger bags, you could check out the Slappa backpacks. They seem decent, and I bought one of their sleeves for my GT60. It's really nice.

thanks for the help!
after doing some more research the medion I mentioned is 1kg heavier than the lenovo or msi you mentioned. even though i wont be carrying it around all that much 1kg on 3kg is quite a lot. it is also possibly the ugliest laptop i've ever seen :/ (not that it matters much in the end.)

I'll probably be buying from http://www.paradigit.nl/
leaning towards the lenovo y510p with 4th gen i7 and sli videocard atm.

but there is this great pricewatch website in holland (http://tweakers.net/categorie/496/laptops/producten/) which I will probably use to eventually get 50/100euro off the price.

My current laptop is falling apart, and I'm thinking about being a baller and going for a gaming laptop.

Country: USA
Budget: ~$1k
Size: Current screen is 15.6", and the aspect ratio is 16:10. 16:9 is perfectly fine.
Usage: General, some occasional video editing (Windows Live Movie Maker), and Steam games when I feel like it.
Misc: 1080p resolution, HDMI out, USB 3.0 would be nice. My current laptop is loud, with the fan running while simply watching YouTube videos, and it runs pretty hot. I get shutdowns due to heat in the summer, usually when watching videos.

I read some of the last pages and saw recommendations for the Clevo W230ST, and it sounds pretty good, but the Notebookcheck review of the model says it has throttling. Is that bad? Also, the screen is 13 inches, which is smaller than what I'm used to on a 15.6" 16:10 screen. But the build is nice enough that I'm still considering it. With a 128 SSD for the OS, Windows 7, a 750GB storage drive, the total is $1,324.00 (cash price total $1,284.28). Is that a good deal for that price?

A couple other specific questions:
Are the IC Diamond Thermal Compound and additional copper heatsink worth the extra money?
Is 750GB/7200rpm a better drive than 1TB/5400rpm?
What's the difference between the wireless options?

okay I'm bout to go to law school so I'm treating myself to a new laptop. I would like to spend less than 1000 usd preferably closed to 800 i would like to do some decent mmo gaming and some indie stuff(ftl, game developer tycoon, wasteland 2), and of course essayist and research. i really like 15.6 inch but ill take anything up to 17.3 a dedicated graphics card would also be nice. I've been looking into an Asus but id love to hear the communities advice. Thanks

Maximum budget - $500 - $800
Max size - at least 14' , is it true you can hook up laptop to your hdtv and play on your tv?

Planned usage - TitanFall! I want it to run titanfall pretty decently. 720p is fine by me, at around 45 fps is also fine. I also want it for everyday use, such as surfing the web.

Anything fit this?

I'm doing my Erasmus in Poland in 20 days and i need a laptop for my essays and research.

Every one i've checked is rubbish. I've been told to run away from any HP or Packard Bell. The fact 1366x768 panels are still a thing baffles me to no end.

The one and only demand is that it has to have a dedicated graphics card so i can play CS:GO at 60fps at low detail.

I've even considered getting a new Nexus 7 (now it has a 1080p display) and using the PS3 blutooth keyboard i already have which is amazing. This would be the cheapest option, but im worried about battery life and issues with docs (? are there any good office-like app in Android).

So, in short, what would be the best choice for the CPU? Im know nothing about Intel nor AMD components outside the desktop branch.

Thanks in advance GAF.

Are you having second thoughts? How much did you pay for the laptop, and are you beyond the return period?

Cooler: The Zalman NC2000 has been an industry standard for years, and is relatively cheap,
$1,000. I'm enjoying playing games on it but like I said it gets pretty hot. I'm definitely gonna pick up that fan soon. Thanks for the heads up on the fan. Only complaint I have is that it's got windows 8 and, once again don't kill me for sounding dumb but, doesn't it kind of make some games harder to play? Like KOTOR doesn't start up but in my old laptop it did.

So, I'm in the market for a laptop now that my job makes it seem like it would be a benefit (the laptops they have on hand are incredibly slow and often crash upon loading up).

I don't need anything too fancy, mostly it'll be for Word, and internet, though I probably will try to use it for Photoshop and InDesign if it can.

Any thoughts on something that fits this description around 500 dollars?

I've got the asus g750 and it has a 765m in it. Plays everything great. I can play BF3 on ultra (no msaa of course) and it plays really nice. Recent new game I'm playing is FF 14 ARR and I can play on high, no slowdowns, tearing anything. Game looks amazing too btw. Also DOTA 2/LoL will play maxed out 60fps if you're into MOBA's. Plays everything I've thrown at it no problem.

one more thing, $600 is the best price I'd want to pay.

The thing is, I saw a thread on another forum that was asking for suggestions on a laptop that can run games and cost anywhere from $300-$600 and everyone was pretty much saying 'LOL' or 'nothing'

But on this thread, I've seen some suggest laptops that'd be able to run games decently for $500 so I don't know what to believe?

I am looking for something $499 or less that will run titanfall. Is that a pipe dream?

an xbox one :p

No, but really, I too would like something that can run titanfall for this price range. although they haven't revealed the specs for titanfall and likely won't until closer to release, i'm sure some people here could estimate.

Looking for a cheap laptop that will play games. ($450-$600) I play Civ V and Torchlight II on Steam as well as indie games. Most of my heavy gaming is on console. I don't have a computer, currently, and am buying this to have something to surf the web and update my fantasy team. I also want to be able to be able to write because I have been missing that lately. So, it's easy on that end; nothing intensive.

For gaming, I want something that will run the games mentioned at top settings. From searching Amazon, I think my main issue is GPU at my price range. Preferably upgradeable. Don't need anything over 15.6".

After looking around, I've found that the Clevo W230ST and Sager NP7330 are the same thing. On pro-star.com, the grand total is $1,678.00 (Cash Total: US$1,627.66). What pro-star had over lpc-digital and sagernotebook is an additional copper heatsink. These are the options I selected for it:
bb4pz5o.png

Is 16GB RAM too much? Are the extra cooling options pointless? Should I go for Windows 8 instead of 7? Is it worth the gains to get the 4800MQ over the 4700MQ? Most importantly, is $1,678 more money than this laptop would be worth? Would it be better to order a different stock laptop at that price, or should I cut some of the more expensive items to drop the price?

8GB RAM is enough to get you buy for quite a while. Go for the diamond thermal compound but skip the copper heatsink, waste of money if you ask me. Also skip the 4800MQ as the difference in performance is negligible. You'd be better off just picking a laptop with a much meatier GPU than upgrading the CPU at that price

Link me to some of your country's laptop selling websites.
No. You simply should not expect to run Titanfall, or any next-gen game, with a laptop which falls within your current budget.

Your budget is too low for a dedicated GPU. This is the best you'll do.

The CPU and RAM are a huge waste of money. Drop them in favor of savings, or a bigger SSD.

The heatsinks are also a joke of a purchase at $59, which you can purchase yourself for $6.

Thanks. I dropped the copper heatsink and selected the lower CPU and GPU, so it's a couple hundred less. My last concern is the OS. I use Windows right now and it's great, but they offer Windows 8 as an option for $15 less. I've mostly heard not great things about Windows 8, and this wouldn't be a touchscreen laptop so most of it would be useless. But it's said to be faster than Windows 7, and I heard 8.1 fixes some issues. Is that and $15 in savings a good enough reason to choose 8? I also read that 8 has clock issues.

OS/driver issue.

I have an M17xR4 with a 7970M and two screens.

One with a HDMI cable, and one with a passive MiniDP -> HDMI cable.

In fedora, I can use all three screens.
In windows, (with intel chip disabled and latest AMD driver), it doesn't work.

I have two questions.

I just bought the new Alienware 14, but with the 750gb HDD w/o an SSD. If I wanted to add an SSD how hard would that be? I'm pretty sure it's an MSATA SSD slot and not the regular SSD. Also, would that void warranty?

Also, if I want to buy an extended warranty from Squaretrade.com, how long do I have to buy one? Can I buy it any time, or is there a limit on to when I can apply it to my Laptop?

That seems pretty decent, do you think that resolution would be good enough? (I was hoping to get something at least 1600x900 but I'll be willing to look lower if i wouldn't notice it too much).

No, higher res screens are objectively better. All 768p screens are low quality. I actually forgot about the Sony VAIO F. For a little bit more, but still sub-$600, you get a great 1080p panel.

Thanks. I dropped the copper heatsink and selected the lower CPU and GPU, so it's a couple hundred less. My last concern is the OS. I'm actually having my first experience with Windows 8, right now, with my new MSI GT70. Windows 8 is a great OS, assuming you buy Start8 from Stardock. It gives back the classic Start menu and boots directly to Desktop, so Windows 8 really just becomes a much improved Windows 7.

id been avoiding lenovo but are they really that good?
That good? I don't know, but I can say the $1,049.99 Y510p is currently one of the best values in gaming laptops.

1. It's incredibly easy. You just need to find out where the mSATA slot is.
2. No, it only voids warranty if you break something.
3. I don't know what the deadline is on Squaretrade. If you'd bought directly from Dell, you would have until the warranty expires to extend it.

First off, for the future, post laptop specs in this type of format:

CPU
Screen Res
RAM
GPU
HDD

All of the extra super long post stuff is excessive and useless. About the laptop... there isn't much to say about it. If you are looking at it as a gaming laptop, it's worthless.

So I'm looking for a ~$1000 laptop and feel like I've narrowed it down to one of these two:
Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p
or
Clevo W350STQ with pretty boiler plate config

My dilemmas are the following:
1. 750M SLI with 2GB of GDDR5 each versus 765M, which is more future proofed and which is superior on current games?

2. Is the expansion options offered on prostar's site something I can do myself? I see that this config would offer a SSD drive if I was so inclined, which I'm sure I will be in a few months but I've got to keep it as close to $1K as possible initially. I know the Y510p does not have a usable second bay (at least without yanking out the second 750M, which defeats the reason I'm interested in it).

3. Will the 7200 rpm HDD in the Clevo and/or the eventual SSD upgrade option for it make a significant difference in gaming performance over the 5400 rpm HDD in the Y510p? Does anyone know how hard it would be to swap the Y510p's HDD with a solid state in a few months and do an OS re-install, knowing that it lacks an optical drive?

They're basically price neutral, both of the same screen size, and the optical drive in the Clevo doesn't mean much to me unless it's a royal PITA to do a HDD replacement and re-install without one. So any advice?

1. 750M SLI is at best equal to the 765M. If forced to choose, I'd take the latter. Neither is more future proof.

2. It's really simple to add an SSD later, with Clevo machines. It involves removing the bottom panel and, well that's all. I'm not sure with the Lenovo, but the HDD slots should be under the bottom panel as well.

3. Faster drives and SSDs mean faster load times. Lacking an optical drive, your only option for OS reinstall is the use of a USB flash drive. Or you could buy the optical drive from Lenovo and swap it in for the task.

The Lenovo y510p supposedly lacks a second functional drive slot, so I'd have to pull the existing drive to swap out on it. With the Clevo it'd be in addition to the included hdd.

So a 765m is at least equal to the SLI even with all the extra memory? Good to know. Is the pixel warranty and such from prostar worth the money? I would think that at this point the kids they use would be high enough quality for that not to be a big issue.

lenovo y510 should have an mSSD slot alongside the HDD (y500 did). So you could add an mSSD for the OS and some apps for speed and still keep the storage of the HDD.

From everything I've found hte y510p is missing the mSSD of the y500 and instead only offers a NGFF expansion, which obviously has bat shit crazy pricing as far as I've seen.

Also, is microstuttering on SLI Nvidia cards a big issue? I've seen some complaints about this happening on the y510p. Other than that it seems to get better performance on many of they key PC only games I'm looking to play on it (Guild Wars 2 for example), at least going by the Notebook Review numbers.

So I pulled the trigger on the Y510P from Newegg. Deciding factor was that if going price neutral between it and a Clevo I'd prefer actual OEM build quality, the extra SSD bay would be nice but I'll likely just go full SSD in about a year anyhow, and the SLI setup is particularly good at a few key games I definitely will be playing, like Guild Wars 2 that the 750M SLI has been real world tested to run at >30 FPS on ultra.

Going to be my first no optical drive setup, should be interesting. I'll probably grab an external USB drive before too long, but I got external HDDs coming out my ass so it's not like I don't have storage to burn.

Any recommended software for a no-optical drive restore setup or any Nvidia specific tools I should be looking at? Been on AMD/ATi hardware for years now and have been way out of the Nvidia loop.

Hey guys,

I figured you're the people I need to speak to when it comes to vetting my plan or not.

I want a light laptop that I won't have to think about battery life. I don't expect it to run the latest games or encode HD video or process large photoshop files. I'd like to be able to convert a video file if I have to and make some quick edits to an image on photoshop but by no means am I expecting serious lifting power. I'd also prefer it to be cheap but I'd like to spend my money most efficiently so if I'll get greater marginal utility out of spending another $100 or $200 I would happily pony it up. I see this as my daily driver as I'll have to bring a computer to the office daily and my office will likely move. I've never used a Mac but I think a Macbook Air fits this well. It should clock in at around $1100 after taxes.

I'd also like a desktop PC that can play current gen games without much strain. I'm not expecting it to play next gen games but the ability to upgrade it would be ideal. In my mind I've budgeted this at around $600 plus tax. I'm in Canada if this makes a difference.

How does this plan sound? Do you think I'm overlooking anything in particular? This being Laptop-GAF aside, is this an OK time to be buying a PC or should I wait? I assume there's a good deal of crossover between you two.

Thanks for all the help!

I'd have chosen the Lenovo because of the illuminated keyboard, but that's just me. My only advice its to update to this driver.

Sounds like an Air + Desktop setup would suit you well. The ability to kee the costs of the desktop down will be determined by what your starting point is; if you're going to need to buy the entire hardware kit, $600 will go faster than if you just need a PSU, CPU, and GPU.

I'm going to need to defer to Desktop-GAF now, as they'll be way more up to speed on the current prices and trends.

any known fix for Sager notebooks, win 8, with USB3 ports not working? I've tried multiple devices and nothing works in them.

Did it not come with a disc of drivers? USB 3.0 drivers should be on there.

That was the case with my Sager.

I'm a dumb ass. I kind of forgot about the packed in discs, because there was like 5 of them and it seemed over done.
I'll check them out. thanks for reminder

So my absolute max I wanna pay (including black friday) is $700 for a laptop that will likely (saying likely since specs for the game haven't been released yet) run TitanFall at low settings (which i'm fine with), but at a pretty good framerate (im a console player, so i consider 45-60 fps great) .

Any $800 laptops that will likely be on sale in the coming months?

Also, anyone have a reply to this dude's reply on a different forum when I basically asked the same sort of questions I am asking here :

First, any laptop under $400 is going to be crap. You can run your facebook, pinterest, MSOffice and farmville with it ok, which is what most users only need, but if you want something that will last you more than a couple years w/out you wanting to throw it out the window, you will need to start out at your $600.00 range. That might run your WoW and other low intense games on the lowest settings.

What you need to understand is that if you even get the lowest performing laptop to run Titanfall, which is a very graphic intensive game, you will burn up the laptop in no time due to the heat. Having a weak CPU with limited memory, a weak graphics card and a poor design will shorten the life span of the laptop dramatically.

If I was to even recommend a laptop to play on low settings for titanfall, this is what i would recommend. This one is is shy of $1000. It has solid specs, and more importantly, a decent cooling system in it.

Otherwise, feel free to spend $500.00 on a laptop and tell us how it goes.
