Glad you enjoying Sammus. I didn't like her at first, but when I went back to listen to her a second time, it started connecting with me. That Dre and Zelda mix that doesn't particular go together to me. I checked out some of the other ones and I think the Goron Village mix fits the best, but Aesop's flow still feels just a bit off from the beat. Would probably work better with an original artist tailoring specifically to that beat.

Oh no, yeah, I definitely prefer the original of either track in the Dre / Zelda mashup, I just meant it was coming from a similar place in having a single jingle / fanfare back up the entire track. In the case of mashups like that I think I prefer when the original song is arranged to actually fit the original arrangement of the BGM instead of vice-versa because the original background music already has a specific flow in mind. That and, well, with video game music, it's generally meant to be able to loop, allowing you to add in additional verses and extensions as opposed to trying to smush specific background tracks into rap / hip-hop arrangements. I think Sammus' stuff is a lot more effective in that regard because she mainly pulls from the original Metroid MIDIs, which are pretty utilitarian in their arrangement.

I did a Metroid Prime / Kingdom (feat. Keleka) mashup a while back where I had the original Kingdom track re-arranged to better match the Metroid track's arrangement (outside of fudging the opening a bit) because it seemed next to impossible to cut out specific elements of the BGM to better tailor it to the original Kingdom track. That's probably more fear and restraint on my part than it is any inherent flaw in production, though, because I think some of the mashups out there handle the original song's flow combined with re-arranged BGM do it pretty well.

I'm also really, really tempted to do a mashup of Ante Up and the opening track to this Halo 5 suite which ends at about 3:38 provided there's some interest.

well you need a smartphone with an ok enough screen, so that's the assumption, that you already have a smartphone. It can be android which is actually more compatible, or iphone.

beyond that you need a headset which will be the base for your head mounted display (HMD). There are a set of apps you can get that will do 3 necessary things, Head tracking, stereoscopic vision, and streaming.

I got the headset (and a little bluetooth piece of crap controller I havent bothered using yet) for 17 bucks. amazon sells them for different prices and specs, though around Xmas, the prices have gone up it looks like. You can do video tethering with Android which is best actually, it negates the need for streaming. There are free apps like Opentrack and FreePIE that are android ready for head tracking.

there are pay apps that do the stereoscopic video for you, which the headset lenses+phone translate into a single clear image in front of your eyes.

there are also pay programs like TriDef 3D that stereoscope and actually convert some games to simulated 3d with a built in parallax trick. so far it only works on NviDia, but AMD has a similar program in the works, both of which go for around 50 bucks.

since I am on iPhone I have to use other methods for head tracking, so I have an LED light and a battery taped to the front of my HMD paired with a camera using point tracking software.

In my research I've seen a lot of people using occulus are using tridef and opentrack and the like, so the performance isn't the same but we are definitely in the same realm. The problem comes when Occulus blocks the opensource VR which has begun. I don't know if it's on purpose or if people are only developing to be compatible with ORift, and commercially licensed VR platforms, but those are the only ones with plug and play support. So like OR users have to work at making a game that isn't OR ready work with VR, that's kind of like the general state for openVR. When you get it to work, it's cool as hell though. It's a little bit of work though.


my video card is a Nvidia 670, and I have a quad core older i7-930 cpu.

edit: the funny thing is that the nvidia commercial vr hardware and software require something like a 970-980 generation card, but I have nothing near that. they want to gatekeep this stuff though, if they can force everyone to buy new cards and specialized hardware, thats a lot of bank.

but I think that's also a fail for VR as a mainstream market instead of niche. they're dumbasses, but rich dumbasses. they can afford to "fail" they'll make millions either way.

I went to school in Canada and seasons were pretty cool (I liked fall a lot). I hope you folks get winter soon.


Is anyone looking forward to special breakfasts tomorrow? My Mum just got back from Dominica and brought back black pudding and crab backs and is gonna make saltfish and bakes.

By the way, bear thing is only half a joke, large sections of the city IIRC are actually abandoned and reports of bears just roaming are actually a thing.
