I think a lot of people are trying to view Titanfall through the lense of existing FPSes and are not quite getting that it's running with some new concepts that are fairly unique or adaptations from other genres to it.

CoD for the past few years had MP events the summer before launch where people (or basically those with enough clout on youtube) could play for a few hours. Even had tournaments

Oh you didn't hear about all the commotion over RapeLay a few years ago? Gaming sites did articles on the controversy of it and everything. The thing is, RapeLay was never even officially released outside Japan and all the commotion just gave the game extra attention several years after it came out.
Someone found a listing for a used copy on Amazon or something and mainstream groups caught wind of it. The game got banned from the US (even though it never actually came out here), and it actually prompted an anti-loli law over in Japan which I think got defeated twice because it was too vaguely-worded. The idea was to strengthen Japan's child pornography laws (which are fairly lax compared to the rest of the developed world), but since it didn't differentiate virtual depictions people argued it could trigger self-censorship in the manga industry on the level of America's comics code authority.
