The ERA yearbook revealed that in the UK last year, 1.2m PS5s were sold, 1.2m Switch consoles and 800k Xbox Series machines (GfK data).

For some reason I had these numbers in mind... like I read in some place.
BTW the PS5 was ahead Switch, lose it in the middle to end of the year, and tied again with December sales.

Both could have outsold the switch, if werent for the shortage. Considering they sold this much, with heavy shortages. While switch was easy to make.

To be fair yeah they probably could have, however I don't think the stock situation is as dire as people make out.

In December, the 2 weeks running up to Christmas, the Series X was basically in stock at most major retailers at RRP.

Throughout December there were reasonably priced PS5 bundles regularly in stock at most major retailers, for 6-7 hours at a time (or even longer).

They weren't selling out within seconds.

Something tells me all of them could of sold alot more if supplies werent an issue.
Did the Switch and Series S have supply issues like PS5 and Series X?

Switch physical game sales more than PS4 + PS5 physical game sales , PS5 physical game sales almost = to Xbox One + Xbox Series physical game sales.

Big difference in the number of physical PS5 games sold compared to Series consoles. Some of that will be the Series S, but not to the order of more than 3x. I know a lot of people waiting for GamePass releases ahead of going out to buy games.

That way closer between Playstation & Xbox. Looks like we are in for a great Gen like the X360 & PS3 days where they were neck and neck and we got a great gaming battle.

Most of xbox guys in UK, buy digital now. Elden ring was 85% digital. Add to the xss, and you can see the drop in physical sales.

Well.. beyond a proven increase in digital adoption on Xbox, keep in mind you've got quite a few games that appear on those Sony consoles, that don't on those Xbox consoles lol

And the ones that appear on the Xbox but not Playstation, are on Gamepass.

Despite coming out in November 2020 for instance, Miles Morales occasionally topped the infamous UK physical games chart (and we know most of those sales are PS5 according to those same charts.) well into 2021... it was top 5 in the Christmas season.

There's not a lot of evidence for the "Xbox gamers wait for Gamepass for 3rd parties" mantra. Actual 3rd party game sales numbers are usually in line with the console userbase breakdowns.

Also I wouldn't even know how they are accounting for games being "Xbox One" vs "Xbox Series" in most cases as most cross-gen games are just one SKU.

I imagine how much Sony could have sold if they could reach their sales forecast.

Maybe 1.5m or more in UK.

I really don't think that accounts for more than three times as many physical games being sold on PS5, that's the point.

Based on the number of consoles with Disc based consoles sold in 2021, the minimum gap is going to be ~2x therefore you need to figure out what the other factor is.

For 2021
Series S 375,500
Series X 424,500
For 2020
Series S 85,000
Series X 215,000

Using 359 for PS5 DE, 449 for PS5 Disc and 505.5m in 2021, and 191.0m in 2020

For 2021
PS5 DE 370,000
PS5 Disc 830,000
For 2020* (I am confused by this one)
PS5 DE 372,222
PS5 Disc 127,778

I think the Elden Ring, COD, FC6 numbers suggest for bigger 1st party games, there is no real difference in user attach rates for full price AAA games.

Yeah someone also posted Resi Evil, 8, Hitman, Dying Light 2 and a few others where there was a sharp disparity, so some games not much difference, and overall there appears to be a significant difference.

Source would be great, I think I have only seen physical numbers for those games. I think one was 80:20.

We have seen a couple of games with 25+ pct gap between Xbox digital ratio and PS digital ratio.

But yeah, it would be interesting if we could get attach rates per console sku's. The only real impact that I can see is whether xbox becomes more DTC and Digital cause retailers don't have as much space. I am not sure if that's a bad thing for Xbox or Publishers yet.

Meanwhile, the ERA yearbook also revealed that more and more people are abandoning the High Street in favour of online retail. 72% of all physical games sold last year were sold via online stores. In 2020, that number was 70%.

Interesting part of the book.

Also the fact that Xbox first party games release on Gamepass and date.

Elden Ring launched with over 3x as many sales on PS5 alone, as it did on all Xbox consoles combined.

It did not actually sell anywhere near 3 times as many, it was less than twice as many.

UK physical charts are just.. .really always skewed heavily towards Playstation, especially PS5 w/ those game prices and how much higher they are digitally than the deals you can get on physical games.

Well, we have to consider MS games and their exclusives are now day one on PC and day one on Gamepass and that time spent in GP is time not spent on purchased games, plus there's a bigger PS hardware install base, even while both have been supply constrained since 2020 PS kept selling more hardware in UK.

Maybe 3x is too much and won't happen in most cases, but 2x or higher I think it may be common for platform splits of games at least in UK.

I'm talking about all physical games across 2021.

I clicked on this thread thinking Resetera had come up with some cringe new retrospective called ERA Yearbook and I don't know if I'm relieved or upset.
