The iPad Mini

I have to say, after watching the Verge video reivew of the mini, I really want one. It looks so great and definitely something I'd put in my bag. It looks like I'll get one next year, when it gets the retina display.

I went and visited an Apple store during lunch and am I'm in love. I will be buying one for sure I just can't decide between Black and White. I have a Black iPhone 5 and have no problems with the scuffing or anything but would be a little more concerned with that on a tablet. I also notice that the white shows finger prints a lot less than the black. I know this is a minor thing in the scheme of things I just can't decide. I've never owned a white Apple device yet but I'm leaning more towards it now.

Maybe for some I guess. I'd rather get a tablet that was like a bit heavier and thicker but looked 10x better, screen-wise.

Hmm, I don't know. I had a Nexus 7 and it was too small for me. Also, I don't have a smartphone, but I feel like if I did, I would never really ever feel the need that I wish I had a middle ground between it and a regular iPad, especially with how much something like the iPhone 5 could do. Just too niche for my needs I guess. Whatever floats your boat though.

For me, I want a small and light screen large enough to read on but small enough that it doesn't feel like I'm carrying around a netbook screen. The N7 was tempting to me for this reason, but I never cared much for Android on a tablet (love it on my phone). The iPad mini fills this niche very well.

Also I didn't realize the smart cover used magnets to click into a triangle to be used as a stand, I always thought the ridges lined up to do it. Now excuse me while I continue playing with the cover while waiting for the FedEx guy.

Get black. That new black tint they're using is some alluring shit.

Go black, you'll never look back.

No really. All of my Apple devices are black and I have never had a white one. The white looks great on the Mini but ultimately I went with black, it looks so much better in person with its blue tint. Also, I have been walking around with it everywhere today and have bad it placed on the car seat while driving etc. I don't think it'll take damaging that easily. Also, my iPhone 5 have no scuffs after more than a months use.

I don't understand why these reviews keep comparing it to the iPad 3. The screen is obvioisly worse, so for all other variables, it should be compared to the iPad 2 (or the N7, Kindle Fire HD, for that matter).

And then they're talking about the A5 being awful? What the hell? I haven't had an issue with any games on the App Store with that processor.

Reason is that iPad 2 is a device that was launched in early 2011 while the iPad 3/4 were launched in 2012.

It isn't fair to compare a $330 product to a $500 product but you do realize that everyone who reviews this probably are using an iPad 3. So hard to digest the fact that the screen is a serious downgrade.

Oh my God it's perfect. It's just perfect.

Screen resolution is fine. I mean going to and from my iPhone 5 to the mini it's obvious but the text isn't any less crisp than the iMac screen I'm looking at right now, or the iPad screen I've been looking at for the last 3+ years.

Size, weight, it's fantastic. It was a little heavier than I thought it would be but it's actually just right. And somehow it feels thinner than my iPhone 5!? Or is that just the tapered edges playing tricks on my mind?

So glad I went with the 32Gig. (This is the first time I've ever gone with more than the base 16Gigs on an Apple device) It's currently syncing every game from my iPad 1 and it's not even half full. Ehehehehehe.

Gonna let fate decide, the wife and I are headed to Best Buy in a bit, might walk out with two Minis if they have em in stock.

Well as fate should have it they only had one 16gb, so my wife gets upgraded to a 32gb one. She said "Oh they only have one, that's ok get it for yourself, I'll wait."

Verge videos are so nice they make everything look good

But seriously, when I saw it in person the build and overall look are fantastic but dat low res screen

hmmm... got an iphone 4s as a gift, but my contract is up (family plans <3). Was thinking of getting an iphone 5... but this is pretty dope...

hmmm...

Ugh. I am such a gadget freak. Even though I have a Nexus 7, and am very happy with it, I keep checking this thread for photos of the device, and impressions.

Have a GS3 that I adore, yet I still lurked the iPhone 5 thread.

I have a problem.

You are not the only one my friend.

++ I'm always intrigued at new devices. Want to know how bad? I can't return anything to best buy for 3 months because I tried out to many things and returned them lol.

I used to do that a lot, I stopped going to electronic stores because I end up buying stuff that I don't need.

Sticking with online reviews and impressions for now unless there is something that I really want.

Which is exactly why I won't get one this year. For some reason Apple decided to ship my iPad 4 with express delivery and it will arrive on Monday instead of Thursday and I couldn't be happier about it.

But next year? iPad mini with retina display? It will be very hard for me to resist.

I love this device. I've totally fallen for this size and form factor.

Feels particularly good for gaming. Just a sweet spot in terms of screen size and weight.

Got the black 16G and I really like it.
It's my first iPad, so I'm still getting used to the slightly different interface than my iPhone, but it's pretty straightforward.

Don't really want the apple cover, looking for a nicer leather notebook looking cover for it. Hopefully I'll find something in the next week or so.

Sadly the store did not receive their supplies today. They got their Retina 13's and their Mac mini's but their iPad mini supplier is in New Jersey. If I didn't have a $50 gift card for their store I'd probably have gone to find one at a Best Buy or something. I can wait. No hurry.. I WANTS IT!

*cough*

Can't wait. No, I can. But I can't.

How many have you finished/played? :D

Practically none of them, which is why I'm so stoked about this. I restored from my iPad's back up, so all the progress I made on there is transferred over, but the form factor will be SO much better. I love my iPad but it's big and heavy and playing games on it for a long time sorta sucks ass. Likewise, there are only a few games that I really enjoy playing on my iPhone that aren't more enjoyable blown up on the iPad (Angry Birds is just too damn small on the iPhone, for example).

Plus my iPad 1 runs like shit so it'll be nice to have something that can actually PLAY all these games I've been buying for the last 3 years.

So as I said earlier (or in another iPad mini thread?)

iPhone 5: Phone stuff, social apps, camera & video apps, (and Spell Tower + Tiny Wings for when I'm bored at work/waiting for friends)
iPad Mini: Games, some music apps
iPad: Movies/TV shows

Then I have Spotify on all of them so I don't need to sync my music. I also still have my iPhone 4 with a handful of games on that too, (I like Cut the Rope a lot better on the smaller screen, you can move your fingers faster over the smaller space since it's such a reflex/timing based game) but it's just so slow these days :( Hopefully they'll update with iCloud saves eventually so I can port them over to my iPad Mini and finish them.

i hate everyone of you that got their minis :(

retailers told me to come back on monday. they all said they didnt have much in the first place. i guess ill grab the 4 if i cant find a mini in stores..

Just got home and now running on my 4th gen iPad, really impressed by iCloud back up. I figured I'd have to do a lot more after returning my 3rd gen earlier. So glad my girlfriend was nice enough to get me the 32gb model :)

Hope you guys are enjoying your minis

I was out and about today and got some hands on time with the Surface, iPad Mini and iPad 4.

The iPad 4 feels the same as the iPad3. I actually picked up the iPad 2 first and it took me 2-3 seconds to realize I had the wrong iPad
The iPad mini's screen is just jarring and my immediate impression was that it's worse than the iPad2's screen.
The Surface display looks sharp, maybe there is something to Microsoft's claims about their ClearType tech.

Surprised, I stepped back and mulled over my reaction a bit. I found an explanation:
I grabbed the iPad mini with one hand and lifted the lightweight device right up to my face. On the other hand the iPad 2 is a bit heavier and I played around with it propped on the table. Likewise the Surface was used with its stand and the typecover. At home I wouldn't use the iPad2 or the Surface that way—it'd be on my lap or on my chest while curled up—but it stands to reason that the iPad mini would be used much more closer because of it's smaller screen. I'd wager that the increase in PPI on the iPad mini is largely offset by the distance it'll be used by most people.

It's a weird mix in value propositions between the iPad 2 and iPad mini as Apple gave the smaller device Siri and all those other hardware improvements. It would make much more sense to me if the iPad2 were the one at $329/$300 and the iPad mini were at $400 with or without a retina display.

Couple other notes:
1) Everyone seems to be going for the WiFi model. Is it because of the price, you don't want to wait a few more weeks, or don't see yourself carrying the iPad mini out that much?
2) It's a bit surprising to see some Apple fans proclaim an 8" tablet as the perfect size and already declaring a retina iPad mini as the device to own next year. Aren't you forgetting though that the successor to the iPad4 should see some improvements too? Apple made a 30% reduction in thickness from the iPad1 to the iPad2 and about a 12% reduction in weight too. If Apple can make similar gains for the iPad5, while also giving it the striking looks of the iPad minis, it'd be too close to call imo.

The more I use this thing the more I'm convinced this is what the iPad should always have been. Jobs had this flat wrong. This should be the iPad and they should call the larger one the iPad XL/Pro or something.

Retina ipad mini is going to easily be the defacto perfect tablet to own.

But for a whole year I will enjoy the ipad mini, then when retina ipad comes out I will sell it and get the retina mini for half-price. All will be well with the world. It's not one revision vs the other for me. I'll find a way to get both. I'm also not a huge screen stickler....yet.

100% agreed. Since Apple is discontinuing the A5X (unlike the A5. which is still being supported), Im guessing they will put the A6 in there next year. A6, Retina display, improved battery tech to at least match the big daddy iPad (doubt they'll try to reach 12+ hours again due to beefier hardware), and it will be hotcakes.

Its amazing because I was watching videos for the OG Macbook Air, and the backlash on performance to price ration were huge. Lots of people saying how it will supplement your desktop, but not replace it. Looking at the MBA now, it is definitely a desktop replacement. And the iPad took over for the "desktop supplement" role in the lineup.

I want to get the mini so bad. But I think I'll wait a year.

Agreed.

After trying it out I realize bigger tablets are just a pain to use, and if I want it that big of a screen real estate I use my laptop or PC.
