The Last Guardian |OT| In my memories, the monster always has kind eyes

So does this still run bad on OG PS4 hardware? I recently got a PS4 and I haven't really kept up with patch history but I had seen the DF video and was a little worried. Has this been fixed with patches or at least improved?

No and it will most likely never be fixed if they haven't done so by now. You can drop the resolution to 720p if you don't mind and it apparently runs better. Personally I didn't mind playing on my launch PS4 but frame rate has never been by sticking point.

Release date for the book on Amazon is now April 19th. What the hell is going on? Either the initial release date was wrong or it has been delayed.

Finished it last night.

Liked it overall despite a few flaws. The controls/camera im sure its been mentioned but they feel very ungainly. I also didn't connect with Trico as much as the game probably wanted me too-partly because i still saw it partly as an AI "game progression" type thing, where i just got frustrated when he wouldn't do what was needed.

The level design and puzzles were phenomenal. The few one-off puzzles like the
water displacement or the wheelbarrow one
were so so simple but i felt like applauding the game when i figured them out. The sense of spectacle in the latter half of the game is great too as you just move from one set-piece to the next.

Also really happy with the ending. I was afraid it would be a c
heap Trico dies feel sad type ending but nope Ueda's too good for that shit.

Finished it just recently 2 ^ The controls didn't bother me coming from someone who plays Little Big Planet and enjoys the slower pace. Great game! Better exclusive!

I guess it's time for a second playthrough then. Loved the game, hated the performance on Standard PS4.

Jesh, imagine if this released on the Trey. You'd really be crying about performance lol

A few hours in and I'm not having much trouble. I don't get the hate. Maybe they fixed most of the problems with one of the patches? The game isn't 60fps-smooth but I haven't gotten any stuttering so far, been rolling at a pretty solid 30.

Trico behaves exactly as I expected (and thankfully not how I feared). It's just like dealing with an animal or a baby. And at times he even solves things for me while I'm looking around taking in the sights. I think they did a great job with Trico's AI.

The only time I get frustrated is when I miss a super-easy solution to get from point A to point B. Usually it's just because I assumed the solution was a lot more difficult than it actually was.

Can't wait to get back home and play more.

You play on the PS4 Pro? On OG PS4 the framerate is pretty bad, but it's nothing that would lessen the enjoyment.

Yeah some people have problems with the controls, camera and Trico's AI and some people have no issues whatsoever. It really depends on the person.

The game does a pretty god job at giving you puzzles that are easy to solve, but are thought to be harder by the player. It contains some pretty clever puzzles as well.

I'm on an OG PS4. Spoke a bit too soon with my post above because last night I ran into the first big hiccup as far as frame rate goes. It was one of the big puzzle sections outside. When I first exited the building I was in it slowed to near a crawl for a little bit and then stuttered for a minute to two after that. Not too big a deal, though, certainly wasn't long enough to lessen my enjoyment of the title so far.

It's hard to live up to Shadow of the Colossus, but TLG is giving it a good run for it's money so far, at least in my humble opinion.

Yeah, I went in convinced it wouldn't be as good as Shadow of the Colossus. It's now my favorite.

Seems like it could be the case for you as well.

Finally finished it and I'm glad I took my time. Absolutely fantastic game that I wouldn't mind playing again in the future. Really connected with trico and I'm happy with the ending Ueda chose to do. Lol, I was about to smash my controller at the ending segment because I wanted to help out so much, but the damn kid is so slow!!! Frame rates and such didn't bother me, but I'll hold off on replaying it until I get a pro.

I think I might have locked myself out of a barrel, courtesy of a PS4 crash. Spoilers for Barrel 36:
Did the whole cart/helmet thing, fed Trico the barrel and went towards the exterior path. There I had my PS4 crash and on game reboot I was on the top level with one of the gates open but with a respawned soldier blocking the door. Jumped down to try and get a helmet on the top floor again but now Trico won't use the cart to propel me upwards.

Am I screwed?

It may be too late but you can always download an older save if you have PS+

I just started the game, but when you go outside the castle area the music is stunning.

I really hope theres a ton of beautiful music in this game.

The OST is absolutely superb I can guarantee that to you. I was a little unsure when we got a first peek at it but then when I saw the Sony video with Furukawa I was much more relaxed about it and I found it amazing throughout my playthrough, it's one of those games where it doesn't just have a good OST but it uses it brilliantly. I wish they released a disc version of the full OST. I have the CE soundtrack selection but need more.

I finished this game on Saturday, I absolutely loved it. I wish there were more games like this. With puzzles left and right to solve.

The end also was pretty sad too.

Finally picked this up yesterday and played bout an hour before bed. Loving it so far. Trick seems to have so much emotion and personality just with body language

Anyone else feel like this game got really overlooked even by people who'd probably love it? The release date probably didn't help but man it feels like this game came and went in the broader gaming consciousness. Hardly anything written about it post-launch and it didn't seem to make many GOTY lists (I was happy to see it as #1 on Steve Gaynor's list on Giant Bomb).

The more I think about it the more I think this might be the best game I've ever played, easily top 3. I wish more people played it. It just does so much fantastic stuff with narrative, almost entirely wordlessly, just with environmental storytelling, AI, and animation. I've never been moved by a game in the same way.

It's a niche game, incredibly rough around the edges and around 5 years late. Not sure what the expections were, only change for it breaking into broader audiences would have been if it was a technical masterpiece too.

I think it's kind of expected. Initial sales were definitely good and I believe it will have sold fine.

However it's very niche and pushing a specific kind of SP experience that I think timing wise is somewhat at odds with current trends where the focus is either MP/Coop/Social or open world SP with more emphasis on classic player agency.

It's a shame the unique aspects of what the game attempts - and mostly delivers - aren't getting a bit more media coverage but I find videogame industry in particular the media aligns to popular more than most other markets so I think it just gets overlooked in the rush to cover bigger titles - that are arguably less inivatibe - that majority want to read about.

I think the combination of increased companion focus and reduced player agency focus plays a large part of this too.

The Last Guardian was welcomed just fine. People seem to forget that the game won tons of Game of the Year awards from tons of big publications, sold far better than any prior Ueda game and then game was even number 5 on GAFs game of the years awards. Even fellow developers were gushing over the game like Kojima and Druckmann.

The music is beautiful, but there isn't a ton of it. It's quite sparingly used to be honest, just like it was in ICO.

The music of the game is one of favorites of all time! I listen to it everyday, almost every track is just too good, especially End Titles.

The
epilogue
track is so beautiful.

It's difficult for me to express the extent of how relieved I am that nothing like the Miller's Crossing track used for the reveal trailer made it in the final game (I remember everyone at the time was hoping it would be). Every single bit of music used is better and more fitting for the story.

I love SotC, and feel this game is a huge step down. The main issue for me is how claustrophobic everything feels. Always jammed into some tight space with a huge ungainly companion, and the terrible camera and controls just tighten the screws.

Then I remember riding through the open fields on Argo, spotting a giant flying snake thing, popping up on his back and seamlessly leaping onto the snake before being whisked into the sky. Such a boundless, open feeling game, SotC, still can't believe they pulled it off.

Also, the sense of a real geography in SotC that you learn and internalize over time is great. In TLG one room is much like another, no real sense of place I felt, until near the very end.

I guess it's more of a return to Ico in some ways, but I was never crazy about Ico :-(

I love Shadow of the Colossus. I'd say it's probably the best game I've ever played. Yet while playing this I'm getting increasingly frustrated by Trico not following commands properly or quick enough, the poor controls, and the poor camera, the latter of which is onky exasperated by the small and tight environments with a huge companion

TLG is a lot better then SOTC imo. I really loved Trico and the scale of the nest.. i didnt have much trouble with the controls or Trico's AI, had a pretty flawless experience.. it was a beautiful journey which make me felt sad it ended. I really felt attached to the beast and it make me nearly cry a couple of times.. never had a game done that for me besides the beginning of TLOU.
SOTC on the other hand got me frustrated a lot of times and the constant fighting with the collosi was getting boring and i was happy that it was finished..
But SOTC did nail the fights with combining it with puzzle segments.

God i Love TLG

Finished the game. Really enjoyed it and I shed a tear or two at least twice. Very emotional and fanatstic design. Only negative is some frustrating Trico commandings situations and framedrops.

I guess part of the reason this doesn't really resonate with me so well is that I'm not the biggest pet lover. I can find cats (and especially kittens) cute, but I'm not remotely interested in owning a pet and all the work that goes into one. Yes it's early days yet, but the bond between the kid and Trico or Trico in general does nothing for me. It's not really this games fault. There's been plenty of media that focuses on a bond to a cat, dog, bird or whatever in various films, TV shows and more, but in pretty much every case they've failed to move me since I've been incapable of emphasising at all.

So when I see a bond built on friendship and companionship between man and beast here, it does nothing for me. So all I'm left with is poor AI, camera and clunky controls. It's annoying me to the point where if after taking a day or two break and coming back doesn't make me feel this game soon I might drop it. Just thinking about shelving and moving on from The Last Guardian sounds insane. That game has been at or near the top of every Most anticipated list I've made for near a decade, with it being the follow up to the people who made my favourite game of all time.

I really want to like this game :(

Just started my playthrough this weekend as I needed to take a break from persona 5. Just got to the point past the E3 demo.

This game is really good! Not having any ai issues whatsoever. I'm wondering if the people that did didn't learn the trico commands properly. Like I didn't understand the proper controls for awhile and was just mashing r1 thinking that if I'd press it enough times he'd just do the right thing eventually.

What's the performance like on this now, on the normal PS4?
I finished it at launch and loved it, and wouldn't mind replaying it, but the frame rate problems (mostly in the outside areas) got so bad that they gave me headaches.

So after digesting this game a bit, easily the weakest of the three titles.

Ico

SotC

TLG

I just think he should have had the boy control more smoothly and have more sections with just the boy solving puzzles on his own making his way back to Trico. Puzzles were never super interesting and it didn't come together as a whole like the other games did. And I didn't enjoy the helplessness of the boy either, he could have used a stick or something to fight back with. Enjoyable, but definitely not as big a fan of this one.

I wasn't crazy about Ico either, and not a fan of puzzle games in general, which is exactly why I was sure I wouldn't like it nearly as much. I really disagree with the sense of place not being strong in The Last Guardian, I thought it was masterfully done.

This kind of seems crazy to me. I thought the world building, the art style, the level design and everything made for one of the most natural and well thought out fantasy worlds I've seen in a long time. Most of the world rarely felt gamey or working against its own interests and many places felt like they were real places that had once been lived in. Even the way the
Master of the Valley's
architecture clashes with that of the original people of the valley's is amazing. You can see all the elements that were added on after the fact like the doors the statues come out.

It was all very subtle but it was incredibly well thought out in a manner I thought few games were. That and of course lets not forget that the entire game world can be seen almost from the beginning to the end, that's tighter design than a lot of the Soulborne games in terms of huge sprawling interconnected worlds.

So after digesting this game a bit, easily the weakest of the three titles.

Opinions and all but the boy being near totally ineffectual against the armors was kind of the point. Him being able to properly defend himself negates a lot of the use of Trico and would have called for a very different game and design sensibility. Same for the puzzles. Its a quite literally a giant companion quest game and limiting the interactions of Trico and the Boy seems very counter intuitive to what the game was going for. Its based on your interaction between the two.

I don't know how I'd rank the Team ICO games now. ICO was always my favourite for many reasons and it would be hard to displace it considering how influential a title it is in gaming, but TLG is a special game in my eyes and I think like each Team ICO game it does something very different to the previous title(s) and brings something new, fresh and compelling, and something that hasn't been done before. In fact honestly I don't even really think ranking them is fair because at the simplest level they are all quite different variations on the puzzle genre yet they all bring something extra to the table, and that something extra in the end can be what defines those games individually and collectively.

Got TLG in the mail today. Is there anything I ought to know before I play that's not explained in-game? Like "click both analog sticks at once to zoom out" or "when the controller rumbles twice it means you're going the wrong way"?

Don't Google anything except a certain water filled room. Don't spoil anything. Enjoy.

Take your time and don't spam commands to Trico.

I think you'll be ok. The game does good at giving you tutorial prompts when needed. However I will second the "don't spam commands" from the previous post. Trico will let you know, though, he'll make a weird, stressed-sounding noise if it doesn't understand you or you are not trying to do the right thing. Enjoy, this is really is a great game.

Glad it wasn't just me. I knew exactly what to do there but
Trico's damn tail just would not drop.
I hated myself for having to go to the 'net for a part of this game, but I'm glad I did because after a quick re-load what I was originally trying to do ended up working.
