The Last of Us has ruined gaming for me

Anyways, The Last of Us is simply my favourite game of all time, and has set the bar so high for me in terms of story, characters, and performances that everything I have played since feels hollow.

Awesome game, but this quote right here is why it can't be in my top 10 and it hasn't ruined games for me. You left out gameplay! If you remove the graphics and story, you're left with a pretty average playing game.

It certainly made the later half of 2013 quite a bore for me. Nothing else, however entertaining or fun, just couldn't grip me the same way. 2014 offered marginal improvements. It's always going to be a "compare this to" title and something people will refer back to for years and years to come.

I may yet double-dip on the PS4 version for cheap. I don't know. I went through Survivor and it drained my gaming soul (in a good way!) and I'm not sure I can take that kind of pressure again.

How? The gameplay is so whatever in that game. How many times was the whole, pick up a ladder or a raft to get Ellie through a puddle used?

I enjoyed the story though.

It also amazes me that in the year we got TLOU we also got Bioshock Infinite which was also stellar (with some flaws of course) in terms of its narrative. In any other year it might have received as many accolades as Last of Us did. I only bring that up because 2013 was such an amazing year for games, if not just for those two examples.

I never thought the story was actually that fantastic. It was pretty average and quite predictable.

The characters and atmosphere was fantastic however.

I have Bioshock Infinite on my PC since day 1 but only got 5 hours in before I got bored of the shooting. The world was fucking incredible though, I really need to give it another chance.

As I mentioned in my post, story is the big draw for me in games. I set most titles to Easy mode just to enjoy it.

That said I think the gameplay was fine, if not radically new or innovative. It did what it did well. But it's not the reason I love the game.

It's a nice game to play. Played it on PS3 but now I want the remastered version and play on grounded difficulty and see how that goes. Too many people have praised that mode for me not to at least try it.

This is exactly how i feel. Just after playing The Last of Us on PS4 (i've played on the PS3 and though it was boring), i was so immersed and passionate for the game that... It's even hard to explain. So, what is the next game i play after TLOU? The Evil Within. It felt like The Last of Us done wrong.

Coincidentally, when I got my PS4 I got it with Last of Us. When I got bored with that game after a few hours, I put in Evil Within the next day, and loved it to death. Marathon'd it over the course of a few days and couldn't leave it alone.

Some Venus and Mars stuff for sure.

Neogaf ruined gaming for me. I only care about graphics now.

Is the thread title a meme? Put it into Google and you'll find a thread in ever single forum with the same thread title, lol

How far does this conspiracy go?

It seems like the big divide here is between people who focus on gameplay first or people who focus on story/presentation first. I tend to fall into the latter camp and TLoU is among my favorite games of all time. It's just a really special, well-told story with a well-executed, thought-provoking ending.

That having been said, I can totally respect people coming from the other side and saying that the gameplay is too generic for them. For me, though, it's about tried-and-true mechanics with good pacing. The way you approach human encounters vs. normal infected encounters vs. clicker encounters adds enough variety to the strategies you'll use for me. I also tend to play it more stealthily. I could see it being shallow if you play on easy and gun your way through every encounter since you'll have more ammo to use. Then again, I don't need a lot of wrinkles in a game's mechanics...give me a solid set of rules and execute the rules correctly throughout, and I'm pleased.

Keep hearing all the praise and I still haven't played it. Successfully avoided spoilers to this day. I really should buy the Remastered Edition someday...

There's people in the Buy/Sell/Trade thread selling the digital codes for $15-20. I'd suggest picking it up at that price and giving it a chance. Even if it's not GOAT in your mind, it should still be a fun ride.

I feel sorry for you, i thought it was meh lol.
You feel sorry for someone who enjoyed a game rather than having a cynical "I hate everything lol" mentality? Ok then.

You really should. First time I played it, I couldn't get into it at all. I decided to pick it up again and literally played through the entire thing in one sitting because I couldn't put it down.

Is there any way to make the game more enjoyable to play, though? I mean the story so far is pretty dry (I'm up to the point shortly after
the main character's female friend supposedly dies and we're looking for some car parts
), but it's hard to find incentive to keep playing. The stealth mechanics are pretty frustrating and the combat in general feels really awkward. I've died in this same section about 10 times so far, with a bunch of zombies surrounding my group and the clickers constantly killing me. When I do pass a section, it feels more like luck rather than skill or I am just relieved that the extremely slow creeping is over for now.

Ys games ruined everything that isn't Ys games for me. Why can't Joel dash across the stage at the speed of light while awesome ass music plays as I fight a monster 10 times bigger than me where every swing at me is a chance for instant death as I attack 5 times a second all while dodging lazers spammed across the battlefield.

Man last of us sucked.

TLOU was okay, only did one play through on the PS3. Started up on the PS4, but I stopped immediately after the prologue. It's got good narrative, but I can't pull myself to go through it again.

Now Monster Hunter 4, Monster Hunter 4 has ruined me. Hardly touched any other games in the two weeks I've had it.

That first 1/4 of the game is really kind of poorly paced, I'll admit. You get some more weapons and tools later on that make things less frustrating, and the story really kicks into high gear. The 2nd half of the game almost feels completely different, too. I'd recommend sticking it out a bit longer, but certainly your mind may not be changed.

No, this is kind of how the rest of the game goes. The ending is kind of cool though. In some instances the frustration you are experiencing actually gets worse.

I always dreaded the gameplay parts and the reward for beating them was it advanced the story a bit. There were parts where I would literally just try to run past all the guys to skip these portions.

The same happened to me, I beat it the week it came out and couldn't play any other story-driven game for a number of months, TLOU just set the bar too high and even now I doubt many games will ever come close to it.

Hahaha! Amazing.

OP: It's on my short list of best game ever, though It hasn't ruined gaming for me. :)

I wish I didn't read stuff like this before I played it. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more.

It was an average game with a good-great setting and Story and some crazy attention to detail.

To me the best part to the game was the first 20 minutes.

Same. That beginning was their great idea and they knocked it out of the park, then they had to make a game to support it, which was just ok.

Alright thanks, I'll try to persevere. It's just pretty frustrating considering it was a big reason than I got a PS4 in the first place and yet it's some of the least fun I've had in a game in years.

The Last of Us is a damned good game, but i only felt the need to play through it once. Once i experienced the game, i didnt feel a need to revisit it multiple times.

Its a different game on the very hard survivor mode, not knowing where enemies are, it just plays so much differently.

Simple levels become sweaty. tactics change, everything changes.

It is one of the best games I have played, but to each there own.

You might think oh yeah, very hard mode, its just less health, no, you loose your radar and it becomes more a horror survival,

Not ruined gaming, but it puts story and character on a different level.

Have you played Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver, silent hill 2, or Metal Gear Solid 1? They all have superior story lines imo

Guys, this thread isn't about The Last of Us. It's about a game that's become so ingrained in your thoughts that it's hard to enjoy other games. Read the last sentence.

"I'm wondering if anyone else here has a game that stands so tall above everything else that it sometimes makes it difficult to enjoy games you normally would have, if that game didn't exist?"

So can we please not turn this into a TLOU is or is not good/mediocre/bad thread please?

Anyways, I've felt the same way about a lot of enjoyable media where I have a chance to spend 10+ hours in a world. Games, books and TV shows have all had that effect on me (I find movies to be too short to get that same feeling).

The Last of Us was definitely a great game that left me in a gaming malaise of sorts, where other games just didn't interest me, but that passed with time. Others have mentioned focusing on games on the opposite side of the spectrum (like Spelunky or Mario) and I think it could help you get out of your funk.

In which we come to terms with the concept of holistic experiences.

Deadly Premonition. No other game has yet had as amazing of a narrative/twist.

Yeah, I just finished Deadly Premonition and then started RE: Revelations and it feels juvenile by comparison. It's not that DP isn't really goofy at times, it's just most games have very predictable, somewhat pedestrian stories by comparison. I love games where I have no idea how the plot will unfold and the endings really make me think about what I just played through.

I don't feel I fully got TLOU when I played it for the first time recently. Its was decent but nothing revolutionary to me. Good story, OK gameplay.

I understand the feeling though, most action RPGs feel lacking to me after Dark/Demons Souls.
