The Last of Us - Review Thread [Emargo up, scores in OP.]

well it took me 18.5 hours to finish the game and i didn't come close to finding everything, so yeah, you'll get your money's worth.

I honestly thought this game was not going to live up to expectations when it came to the industry's reception of it. I didn't think ND could do it this late in the gen, particularly with the stigma that's grown over Uncharted 3, and many people's backlash to what that series represents in gaming today...but it seems like they've done it.

Last of Us is not a traditionally "fun" game. It's dark, depressing, and emotionally tiring. Some won't like that. That's good. That's okay.

has me more excited than anything. Don't need to read the reviews.

For those getting bent out of shape over 7s and 8s... leave it. There will always be outlying scores, it's how opinions work.

I'm done trying to keep things civil. We need to be mature about this, not letting your fandom get the better of you and start attacking people and sites because they didn't give the game a good score. I thought we were better than that. Guess not.

Damn - IGN saying the game took 17hrs to beat!

19 hours here. Game is loooong (a bit too long for me taste, the final areas felt like they would have benefitted from a more tighter structure).

In general I felt it was a great game, but Phil has some points in his review on Polygon, and I tend to agree with them. The game is a fantastic experience, but some of the character choices and motivations felt a bit forced by the end.

Some of what I have observed, mind you I haven't completed the game yet:

  • Best opening of any game ever (of what I can remember)
  • It is brutal. Sculls are breaking, blood is floating down your character’s arms, heads are falling off, arms ripped apart etc.
  • Controls and animates much nicer than Uncharted 3.
  • Perfect controls.
  • Enemies don’t react to NPC characters presence. I can hide behind cover, while as an example, Ellie can run right in front of a soldier, even run into him without them noticing. Another case is, that I were hiding in a very small room, a Clicker were in the same room, so I decide to throw a brick outside the room and while the Clicker tried getting out of the one door, Ellie tried gett IN, so the two of them kept walking into each other. In fact they don’t hear sounds from NPC characters - it’s a tough act to balance, as I could see it get frustrating if your NPC’s were the reason of you getting caught.
  • NPC characters can get in the way, so that you have to push them which can get intense if a Clicker or Runner have decided to run for you.
  • Best melee system I have ever tried (mind you I haven’t tried out the Batman games), as you really feel the punches and what not. Super satisfying.
  • Normally I hate looting but I like it here as it feels like you are constantly rewarded.
  • I’m playing on normal and I hardly run out of ammo, because there’s ammunition hidden in a lot of places.
  • It’s somewhat repetitive. Actually sometimes it feels like in Uncharted when you go in a straight line and then gets presented with enemies in a sandbox environment, repeat.
  • Phenomenal acting.

Any questions I should answer?
The bold part is exactly why I probably won't be getting on launch. How's the length? If it's about GoW/typical action game length then it won't be much of a bother.

Lol Uncharted massacre all over again? (well at least not THAT bad)

"8.0????? Fuck them I knew they only love Microsoft"

Yeeeeeaaah. You guys have to be less entitled.

I played the demo and saw all multiplayer stuff and I am for sure I wouldn't be able to give it anything above 8.5 because the multiplayer is such a generic boring gamemode.

I wouldn't be able to be a reviewer or at least people would hate me, but I would also never give a full score.

A full score means to me a game without flaws, perfection in all ways for my taste. Never had such a game.

Keep it cool guys.

Bias.

:P

Now I can't care any less about review scores BUT with that 7.5 amidst the higher scores, is there an ulterior motives here? I see people claiming being sponsored by MS/Xbox so is there reason to call bullshit? I mean, can't Naughty Dog investigate, are there laws being broke or is this standard practice?

Like I said, I don't care. I'm all over it. But the claims here make me think something more "dirty" is at play.

polygon IS ms-pr

always doubt what you read from them and even better, just ignore the site.....

All things considered this is a pretty big indictment of the game:

More notable problems with The Last of Us manifest as it leans more on the traditional trappings of third-person shooters — fights against waves of enemies or arenas full of waist-high cover where your only recourse is to kill everyone in your way. These sequences sit at odds with the rest of the game. Joel can't take much damage from enemies, which isn't such a big deal when you're sneaking past them without incident. But at increasingly frequent points in the narrative, I had to buckle down and deal with the messy gunplay and repeated checkpoint restarts.

Super disappointing if there's actually no way to avoid those encounters. Still want to see for myself, though.

It's just bullshit.

There score stands out like a shit stain on the mona lisa.

It's obvious they scored it low for hits, and there going to get them.

Once again, fuck them. Hope they get black listed on GAF, and on Metacritic.

Well fuck them to in that case.

Always knew they were Microsoft loyalists. No surprise there.

This is the shit that pisses me off the most. Again, it's not about the opinion.

The person who reviewed the game can think whatever he wants to think.

IT"S THE SCORE ATTACHED. They knew it would stir controversy among the sony fanboys, and generate hits on N4G and other sites and they'll fucking get it.

Calm down bro. There is no conspiracy. They just didn't think TLOU was the second coming of Christ.

Sessler's review is great. Loved it as much as his BioInfinite review. Eurogamer review is really good too. Reading Edge now. They even have a feature where they call Druckmann ND's Renaissance Man :)

So is ShopTo any good? Do I have wait long for it? Like 3-4 weeks?

With shopto you tend to wait minus 1 day.....yes minus...cause they usually (most times actually) get the game to you 1 day before the release.

Edit: Wait..your looking for international delivery. In that case, I got no idea! lol..email them and ask :)

7.5 would have been a perfectly fine score to award any of the Uncharted titles. The cries of bias are ridiculous. Play the game, take a look at his criticisms afterward, and see if you can understand where he's coming from, regardless of how much you agree or disagree then.

Its pretty funny though how in the comments section of the Polygon review it's full of mods and people warning that the NEOGAF hivemind is coming to criticize. To me it almost seems like click bait.

Wow at all these review scores. Can't bloody wait to find out if ND have just topped UC2 and smashed out my game of the generation. If it's as good as it looks like it might be, then ND get my gold star badge for being the best dev across this gen.
I know, I know, they probably can't contain their excitement at the prospect ;)

please tell me metacritic has banned polygon..fuck em

They're only 0.5 away from Gamespot.

And before we get the "they're affiliated with MS" waffle, they gave 6/10 to Forza Horizon too - which also stuck out from the general consensus. But they're entitled to their own opinion. How many of us disagree with the crap loads of 9/10s CoD gets every year? Perhaps it's about time we saw a site who didn't just go with the hype and formed their own opinions? We can each specifically ignore the site if we don't share the same opinions if we choose, the same as we can ignore certain movie publications.

Getting a bunch of 10s doesn't mean anything. Uncharted 2 got great scores without being a good game. All you need is the right balance of exclusivity and pre-release hype, while attempting to be "deep" with a tacked on story that doesn't suit your gameplay. Bioshock did it just a few months ago. If you have the right budget it's pretty easy to get the press to cum all over your games.

This really feels like this generation's Resident Evil 4.

Incredibly high praise! Thanks for the impressions.

Congrats to Naughty Dog. It appears they have crafted another masterpiece.
