The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky PC |OT|

Bought this yesterday just before the 15% sale ran out. Sold a shitload of Steam trading cards beforehand, so it only ended up costing me £6.42 :D haven't gotten around to playing it yet though, maybe this weekend.

To everyone who thinks game topping GOG sales chart means something:

Different game obviously (Shovel Knight), but still I suspect the cut is similar in this case. Steam is just a larger market by order of magnitudes, 's all.

This is garbage, you should have looked into this more. This was during the summer sale. I know Steam had a sale too, but because of how gog do sales normally during the rest of the year and how they curate, releasing during the GOG sale would have hurt Shovel Knight a lot. Almost their entire catalogue went on sale, and unlike standard gog sales where the percentage off normally peaks at 60%, there were tons of super deep discounts in the summer sale, so this was a big deal for users.

Even worse, the sales take a large amount of the front page. So whereas most new games on gog get front page banner advertisements for their first week shared only with at most a couple of other new games, shovel knight was for its first week sharing the limelight with the huge daily discount deals. I would not be shocked if a lot of gog users were unaware shovel knight was even available on gog.

So it was basically a situation where few people saw it, and those that did may have been saving their money for the sales.

Don't get me wrong, Steam still stomps all over the numbers of every other ddl store, but not to that degree. See here:

There is sales data for The Witcher 2 floating around and it had the split at 80/20 which sounds right considering the much larger steam userbase. I think it was shortly after launch as well.

We don't typically comment on sales, since we can't give numbers.

Best I can do is to ask you, how well do you think it's selling? Because it's probably selling somewhere around there. ;)

-Tom

So it is bombing horribly and SC is canceled? :(

PC digital sales aren't even counted anywhere as far as I know, or at least not meaningfully. So you probably could say something more specific, but that might lead to confusion over the inconsistency in giving PC and console sales info.

It's charting well on both steam and gog, it's doing fine.

Question as to whether it's doing fine enough to commit to the leviathan of 3rd will probably have to wait to see if SC does as well in the winter I guess

3rd seems as if it's ALMOST a break after SC.

Given the size of the games though that probably means a game that'd give a publisher pause and more seriously consider instead of re-enacting the Grandpa Simpson .gif.

So I'm currently at Valeria Shore and it seems that I have the option to either move on with the story or be done with whatever unfinished business I had left. So I said what the heck and decided to check online if I missed anything. Just before reaching this location I cleared Amberl Tower, but apparently from what I've gathered I seem to have missed some sort of timed/hidden quest?

The absolute worst things about this game are the quest time constraints and the inability to return to previous locations. Have they fixed this in the sequels or am I going to have to deal with this throughout the trilogy?

I was joking, I'm sure it's doing pretty well. Possibly better than the Ys games did at release which would be impressive given the bugs.

Tom probably knows I was joking, he and I go way back. To like 2011 or something.

I guess it's safe to assume it met your expectations. That's a relief. Hopefully SC will do even better.

Damn! Man 2011, I remember I was still in diapers then :p.

Are most of the bugs taken care of now, then? Sorry I haven't been keeping up with the thread. I bought it on release, but saw the difficulties people were having, so I figured I'd check again in a week or so before I tried playing it.

Am I good to go?

Yeah, it's fine. Only small issues now.

Still a few little bugs here and there but it looks like everything that would actually be detrimental to the experience is fixed.

So i bought the game a few days ago, played it for like 10min so far and I really think that playing it with a pad will be better for me.
But I have absolutely no idea how to do that. I have a PS4 and 360 controller, since the DS4 is the superior one, what software am I supposed to install to use it in TiTs ?

Almost hate to ask it, given the JRPG bit and the age, but does any form of fast travel open up later? Running along highways dodging monsters (specially those flying insects) is getting old, especially when you're done with the area and have just about outleveled them. Yeah, you can run away from the battles quickly, but with long stretches to cover it can be tedious.

Also, what info does the Information quartz give?

There's no fast-travel in this game, no -- but there's also not toooooo much need for it, since you never stick around in one area long enough to backtrack more than once or twice (if you're still early on in the game, you're probably backtracking more than you ever will again). The game's really linear overall (side quests aside), and you'll never be revisiting old locations -- once you move on to a new city, you're done with the old one completely (as in, you can't even go back if you want to, so make sure to finish up all your local business before moving on with the plot!)

Not sure how far you've gotten, but one of the rewards for ranking up is a quartz that makes enemies ignore you. I've found this makes running around the fields much less aggravating.

A short description of the monster, which sometimes includes things like "explodes when killed" or "immune to _ damage". It's been pretty helpful to me so far.

Once I got the Haze quartz, it became a mainstay in one of my party members' Orbment. Trying to maneuver around weaker enemies with a four person party without Haze was no fun... Especially when you factor in the small corridor like areas of one of the Tetracyclic towers.

Also, just a heads up; Haze overwrites the Scent quartz.

Cool. I was afraid I'd have to do a lot of dodging otherwise.

I assume this is the Haze quartz that devious is talking about. Good to know!

I really wish we could get some patch notes with these updates. I just got one that was 0 bytes (?), no idea what it was for.
Yeah. I mean the speed at which they are coming is incredible, but if we had notes, perhaps we'd be able to give better feedback and/or bug reporting.

Finished this game last night and now I understand why people were so bummed out about the ending. They've sold it to me, I really want to play the second game!

On the first game, I felt it was a memorable experience. As many pointed out, the pacing for the first two chapters or so was extremely slow. It starts to pick up after that quite dramatically. I loved the world building. There were subtle movements and actions from random NPCs occurring all the time. Great to see when I'm just progressing through the game without any regard to achievements or seeing every piece of content but I can see how it becomes a nightmare if I were concerned about it.

For the battle system, I probably didn't properly exploit all my options completely. Nonetheless, it kept me somewhat engaged for the most part. The most grueling portion of the game was the last dungeon because of all the
monster chests with the same two combinations over and over and over again
. Music was great for the last two areas though!

A very good game overall. Also, Olivier is awesome.

Great news: XSEED tweeted out that Trails in the Sky is the publisher's most successful PC launch to date.

Part 2 of their update is they will try and bring more JRPG goodness to PC along with increasing their DRM-free offerings.

EDIT: Beaten by seconds.

Congrats to XSEED, although part of me is sour that the honor didn't go to Ys, but that's just me being petty.

Hey, remember, this is just a successful LAUNCH. The game will have to keep up this momentum if it wants to have any hope of catching up to our Ys titles. ;)

I know you don't like the Trails series, but the Ys series isn't the series that's in danger of not seeing further entries released in English.

Hmm, I don't think I've ever actively said I didn't like the series, at most I've shot off some playful barbs at Falcom becoming the Kiseki Company (which I think I've seen you express similar concern over).

But I'm finally playing it now, so I'll be able to have a real opinion on it eventually.

Out of curiosity besides Falcom what PC JRPG are there? Never hear much about them. I would LOOOOOVE to see Stranger of Sword City though

Well, we've got Corpse Party on the way. That sort of half counts as a JRPG, since it plays very much like an RPG without battles.

Haze + the one that makes enemies visible are big ingredients to getting White Gehenna, too (it's one of those things Orbment system enables like healing magic boosting HP).

Wow Tita's S-Craft was awesome(*´ω`*)

Her entire strategy for me was to straight dump on fools with +Crit for more CP for more dumpin'.
