The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword |OT| Home of Punkin' Chunkin' Champion 2011

Hmm, all the spoilers that I shouldn't have highlighted, but did anyway because I'm way too curious, seem to say that the final boss puts up a tough fight. I pretty much already know who it is, so that's not really a spoiler to me anymore. However, I'm beginning t think that I should take my Master Quest approach to this, and be prepared. And in Master Quest, I got the invincibility spell after the Forest Temple. (Yes, you can do that.)

So... a few questions:
1. Bottles. How many? Are they hard to find?
2.
Guardian
Potion. When do I get to buy one? Can you carry multiple?
3. The
Hylian
Shield. Nice to have or need to have for that fight?
4. Heart Pieces. Are there any that are a pain to get? (Already got the
Fun Fun Island one
, it was easy when you know the trick.)

Basically, I want to step into the final area with the odds stacked in my favor as much as possible.

EDIT: I am about to figure out how to talk to
the Thunder Dragon, but he looks kind of... dead.
(Post dungeon 6 spoiler.)

1. There are five Bottles total. They're not terribly difficult to find.
2. I'm pretty certain you can buy them as soon as you begin the game, and I don't think there is a limit to how many you can carry (outside of how many bottles you have).
3. It's not a necessity for anything provided you are good at shield bashing, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't nice to have.
4. The ones you get for completing the
Rickety Rails
and
Archery
minigames can be kind of obnoxious if you're not good at them, but no Heart Piece is as bad as the
Fun Fun Island
one.

Thanks!

Honestly,
Fun Fun Island
isn't so bad, when you know the trick. But I don't want to be a tease about that, so I'll share how to hit it.

It is important that you get all five rings, but that's not the difficult part. The difficult part is hitting that square on the rotating platform. Well, as I said, there's a trick. The position of the square you want to hit can be predicted, more or less. If you hit all five rings, the position will be about 90 degrees counterclockwise from where it is as you pass the 5th ring. You probably need to adjust slightly at the landing, but you should see the square you want come right into view as you're almost down. From there it's easy to follow it and land. If I get low on Rupees again, I'm heading over there and grabbing repeated 500 prizes.

I'm not good at the other two minigames, though...

Heh.

This has probably already been pointed out, but I love that when you trap a fairy in a bottle, it bangs against the side, trying to escape. I love all these little touches.

Hey, look on the bright side,
you know you want to see Scrapper get beaten up. Now's your chance. I may or may not have let one of those big enemies with the shield beat up Scrapper...
But yeah, it is kind of annoying.

Good to hear then. For an escort mission it wasn't that bad, only when the carriage turned around would it get annoying.
I didn't enjoy that part one bit, honestly.
The scene Kev mentioned, besides being shorter, is a lot easier and can actually be fun if you use the right item (
the fully upgraded bow
).

Having been taking my time with the game (40 hours in and just finished the part where Link
goes through the gate of time to see Zelda crystalize herself)
, i'm pretty sure this is my new favorite Zelda game since MM.

Everything is just so much fun, combat is fun, controls work perfectly and i've had zero issues while playing, music is incredible, puzzles are fun, items are fun, catching bugs is fun, side-quests are fun because they flesh out everyone in the town's backstory, all the town characters are really fleshed out to the point that I even remember all their names and who they are,
Pippit's mom is totally digging me, the item check girl is so moe,
and overall, it's just a really really enjoyable game. This game, for me is the very definition of fun, and the best example of non-frustrating gaming i've come across. When I get hurt or when I do something wrong, I realize I need to change my strategies and the game is really good at that.

Playing with Pro-mode enabled (have been since the start) Fi rarely says anything ever, and I don't quite understand the hassle everyone has had with her, as she rarely talks outside of her story things. Even getting new items she doesn't even tell me how to use them, or where I need to use them on. Additionally, I actually like the dowsing. It works nice for why it's needed, easy to use to find things, and switches to and from normal movement very quickly and in a non-obstructive manner.

Hell, I felt sad at some of the cutscenes I came across, and was in wonder when they went over some of the lore of the story in it. I had chills as I learned new revelations of the series, and just overall I am very happy with this game.

I didn't enjoy that part one bit, honestly.

I did it with that, and I felt like a badass jumping, shooting, sniping dudes everywhere. I became Robin Hood.

This game is beautiful... except on my plasma. I have a PC capable of running it via Dolphin, but it's too much of a hassle to set up. I played Majora's Mask over the summer on the same TV, so I just have to keep telling my self that it could be worse. :p

Just got to the first dungeon. I am having a lot of trouble with the combat. Those monsters you fight in the beginning forest area take me forever to beat, but I think I have them figured out. Is it like this for most enemies in the game, learn their weak spots and aim your sword there, or am I just terrible?

Also, I keep seeing these bugs everywhere, but I have no idea how to catch them.. I assume I need a bug net or something?

The only annoying thing for me from
the escort portion was that he would get stuck at one point screaming about enemies nearby and I couldn't figure out why-- until I looked around and saw a cluster of bats chilling on the ceiling minding their own business
.

Yeah that is easily the worst part of the game for me. Everything that comes next however is pretty great outside of 2 bullshit sections.

Any developer even thinking about an escort mission should play Resident Evil 4. That's the only game next to Half Life 2 in recent memory that did a good job.

^^^I thought the
escort mission
was extremely easy, and therefore just unnecessary. So not a huge deal for me. I needed to climb up there anyway.

Question: So how can I fly at night? I can't continue running errands until I can fly at night. I'm like 45 hours into the game....why can't I fly at night yet?!

As soon as I saw Scrapper going off in the wrong direction, I got pretty mad. If nothing else, it did a really good job of making me really feel a lot (of hate) for some character in the game.

The actual mission was really easy, just as long as you don't run out of arrows. Which of course, I did run out.

I didn't see a way to give him commands, so
he went off and got himself killed and I had to do it ALL OVER AGAIN omg

It just doesn't make any sense because he can
fly

He is annoying as shit is the only reason I hated it. I only ever had him die once (so much for being able to fly) because I thought he couldn't, but he did.

No wonder he likes Fi so much he is a giant manchild while Fi is the annoying babysitter

You'll be able to purchase a bug net in Skyloft after you obtain the first dungeon item.

W/r/t combat: most enemies don't have a weak "point" so much as a weak "angle." You'll notice with the deku babas that you need to do a horizontal or a vertical slash according to the seam in their mouths. It's the same thing with the bokoblins, except they switch their defenses more frequently. You'll get better at this as the game goes on, but there are effectively three easy ways to deal with Bokoblins (not including ranged attacks):

1. Catch them before their guard is up.
2. Spin attack (they are generally bad at guarding against this).
3. Hold your sword ready for a specific angle and wait as the Bokoblin cycles through his defensive positions. As soon as your preferred angle is open, hit him. When the enemy is stunned, follow up by waggling for the kill.

Number 3 is how the game wants you to fight, but it's also the one people tend to struggle with at first. I suspect there are two reasons for this. First, if you hold your remote in a neutral position while you're running around, your first sword "swing" is going to be an indiscriminate horizontal slash. That one's going to get blocked a lot. Second, people follow up a blocked swing by attempting to quickly hit a different angle, but because they didn't bring their sword all the way out to the ready position again, there is a good chance they'll get another horizontal slash (blocked) or just get unlucky as the bokoblin moves his sword. The thing to remember is that you only need one clean hit on bokoblins before the guard is down and you can waggle to victory. Fights will go faster if you wait and make your first strike a good one.

All of the padding is easy, people aren't complaining because they're hard. They're complaining because 9 times out of 10 they have NOTHING to do with your primary objective.

They're complaining because they feel boring, or not fun. Plain and simple.
You do plenty of stuff that has NOTHING to do with your primary objective in, well, any game, but it doesn't matter as long as it's fun.

It's a mix of both. They're shitty and not fun...but they're also incredibly pointless and add nothing of value.

I honestly don't understand the problem with (pre-dungeon 6)
the escort mission. It's not because it's easy, but because it's almost completely a shooting gallery and I just got my bow. It was fun to practice it in a situation where I was shooting up long distances. I didn't know you could possibly lose it until I heard here.

To each his own, though.

Being pointless and adding nothing is different from having nothing to do with your objective, though.

It disrupts the pacing by
forcing you to go once again through an area you already visited, right after getting to the front door of the new dungeon. So, it's a bit of a cocktease. Other than that, I didn't really have problems with this part, and I had some fun using the bow.

The event that occurs the next time you're to head to that area is much worse, imo.

Ah yes, that's also terrible. What's most strange about that is that in the Iwata Asks on Skyward Sword the developer who designed it said: "I'm not really good at making 3D action games so I made something that even I could do". :')

My only problem with that is that it was over too quickly. They should have kept it going longer to get more uses out of the items.

It's close to
Pipit's house, I think. Keep going up the hill past it and you'll see a gray-looking path that leads down to his home.

Okay, I am just starting the third area, and WTF at all of the Fi complaints. Coming into playing this I thought she was going to be the worst NPC of all time, but she really hasn't bothered me at all as I've been playing. The only way I could see people hating her is if they called her every time her icon beeped. But I mean, no one's making you do that!

This game has gotten a ton better since completing the opening portion. I think the motion controls are definitely hit or miss, but more hit, definitely.

Actually, yeah, they should. And I don't like that part much, but I'd have liked to
get the bow back and use that to fight off some enemies so I could get to the sword.

Also, this is another reason this part is annoying. You just got the
True Master Sword, and then it's stolen.
That's really annoying.

By the way, am I imagining things, or can the
True Master Sword break the enemy's guard. I struck a Bokoblin's guard with it and it reeled back, leaving it wide open to get hit. I don't think the other swords did that.

So you haven't even reached the point most people have been complaining about, and you're coming in here to dispute the experiences of people who have completed the game?

No one is pressing the down button. Go back through the thread and read about the appearances people are complaining about: you'll see a lot of talk about one spoiled puzzle (two for some people), annoying beeping, and infantilizing recapitulation of NPC dialogue. You won't see much about people actually summoning Fi.

Look, I get that not everyone is bothered by Fi popping out, unsolicited, to explain where you should go next even though it was utterly obvious from the prior cutscene. But do the rest of us the favor of assuming we're not just making shit up.

I beat the whole game and didn't mind Fi at all. I don't remember her spoiling anything for me because the game pans over an area with puzzles or something usually and they always make everything obvious.

I also liked the way she talked, I really didn't mind her at all.

Can anyone link me to that game breaking glitch thread (I suck at finding stuff on the internets), the spoiler free one, I think I got to that point in the game and I dont want to screw things up, thanks.

Oh I am I just saying, at the point I'm at in the game, I don't understand the complaints. Maybe later on I will agree. But I was under the impression, after reading some of the comments, that she was like Navi/Midna on crack or something. She probably has talked less than Midna thus far, as far as I can tell.
