Any hints for Ketsui?

I put this back in rotation the last month an hour every so often and I just hit a brick wall. Even put it on the easier X-Mode and I'm lucky if I make it through stage 2 without dying at least once. Is this game just plain hard?

I can never make it past the shipyard level.

I'm wondering the same! I've been also playing it on and off and also can't get passed stage 3

Ketsui is just plain hard. Took me some time to even get the stage 2 boss down consistently, and I rarely beat stage 4.

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Ketsui is tough as fuck. I cried tears of joy when I beat stage 4.

Then I cried just regular tears after a bit of stage 5.

Well,

If you just get to stage 4 then I'm feeling better. I've got the first stage down, and the second one down quite often, with a bomb. Third stage boss kills me though.

Guess it us one of those hard ones. I find it takes enormous mental power to navigate. Just damn hard.

On a lighter note, I one-lifed Novice on Mushi No. 1 and got to 34 on the leaderboard. Mushi was a breath of fresh air after Ketsui.

Yeah Ketsui is hard, not much to do other than just keep playing it to get used to everything it throws at you. Figure out where you can just get away with tiny movements and when you need to let go of the laser and just get out of the way.

Once you get past stage 3...well it just gets harder, although that's like most Cave games. 4 is a big jump up, then 5 is another on top of that.

Ketsui is definitely very hard. For me personally I found it harder than DOJ. Still have never beaten it.

One hint I'd give you is to play the DS version to get familiar with the boss patterns. The better you get the bosses down on the DS version, the easier you'll take them down in the 360 version. Bosses are one of the hardest parts of the game, so if you get those down you can probably make it to Stage 4, and with some practice, Stage 5. Anything after that though, lol...

Dangun feels so different from other Cave games. You could tell me a different studio made it and I'd probably believe it. Maybe I should give it another shot. Such a weird theme though...

Ibara's alright I guess. It just didn't seem magical to me. I've only played it on the PS2 port though, maybe that has something to do with it.

Slash and Orgin are quite different from each other. They really are two different games made with mostly the same pieces. I can definitely see liking one but not the other.

I can only get to stage 5 x-mode once every 3-5 tries. I basically practice what drunkninja has told me (he's been able to 1CC the 1st loop of the PCB multiple times), that you need to memorize where the larger enemies spawn and take them out ASAP. I mean, that's a pretty standard strategy for a lot of shmups, but it's so insanely crucial in stages 2-5 in ketsui. I've still yet to personally 1CC it myself, but I've put 25-50 hours into the game.

and I know this was a few pages back, but @To Far Away Times: Ibara feels so different than most Cave shmups because it's a Yagawa game.. It feels exactly like Battle Garegga and Pink Sweets, which both feel extremely different than anything Cave-developed

I did what adverse recommended...dug out the Boss Rush DS game and gonna play that for awhile.

I also started playing normal mode instead of X-Mode. No cancelling but there are less bullets.

What Ketsui plane/copter are you guys playing? I'm always on the Tiger Schwert (orange one). I like the slow movement which gives me a feeling of more control, the wide shot is also pretty handy. Oh and I absolutely love the design

The uh, other one, the fast blue/purplish one iirc. It's been a while but I think for me the wider shot and slower speed was detrimental for scoring, plus I just had more fun with it (kind of like how I prefer Uo-Poko in Dangun Feveron).

The default one that is first shown...in fact I always just pick the default on all the Cave games. Only exception is on first Mushi I use S-Power (the third one, think that what it is called).

The 4:3 mode is throwing me off a liitle on DS Ketsui. Been a few years since I played it. All my consoles just got picked up and packed so it is handhelds for me till mid December :-(. Back to the iOS Cave games!

I'd kill for Ketsui to comme to EU :(

We got deathsimles, dodonpachi, akai katana but not the master of them all :(
Ketsui was the sole reason I invested in a NTSC-J 360 and it was worth every penny. Chances for a western release are slim to non existent as far as I know. DDP DOJ is also a very nice non region free title, although it's also pretty hard.

The iOS games are a nice distraction for me, but nothing beats the real deal with an arcade stick/candy cab. But it's nice to have them on the go wasting some time.

True. I definitely enjoy them on the stick (got a million of those!) and the cab (got a few of those), but I love the iOS games just as much. I'm no purest, though, and love the 360 ports way more than PCBs...save MMP/PS and Guwange which are cheapy ports.

Plus, I move and are gone A LOT so the iOS games are my little link when I'm in strange places. Plus cool new features like touch-cancel in Espgaluda II and RPG mode in DS are some of my favorite Cave Modes.

Wish they would release a new title and/or Maximum.

Looks like they're granting your wish! Dodonpachi Maximum Blasts Off On October 26 - Siliconera

Bit expensive though, the normal price that is. Wondering when they are bringing the other games to Android

Oh sheet!

Awesome. And a bit cheaper for folks who normally balk at the higher prices.

Looks good that they format for iPhone 5. Got to try out the new phone yesterday and it is awesome light.

Can't wait to play it. Been playing the iOS games quite a bit cause I've been traveling a bunch recently.

Perfect timing.

...Bah, Touch not mentioned in the compatibility list...wait continues

Nice, about time the Windows Phone exclusivity expired. Looking forward to finally playing it; I had the soundtrack on autoloop in my car for a while and it is on point.

BTW Yes Boss!, did you get my PM?

Looks high res like the "HD" iOS games (probably since it wasn't designed for low res screens to begin with) so I'm guessing it requires 512MB like those too...in which case yeah the iPod touch might be left out, other than the newest model.

Edit: The end of the update teaser on the DDP Maximum website appears to show Uo-Poko!

Another edit, looks like he's that funky looking ship in the second iPad shot of that Siliconera link.

I should be good to go...restarted my old dormant iPhone number yesterday since I now live in USA an upgrade was available. I'll likely pick up a 4S this week (or order a 5) as my phone for the next 2 years. Hope it will be enough to play SDOJ.

At this point I'd definitely order a 5 if it has to last two years. I'm actually fairly impressed with it after holding one in my hands.

Hi shmup lovers!

I'm working on an adaptative filter and testing with shmups screenshots.

Can you evaluate the quality? (I've no problem with critics).

It upscale by 2x the native shmup image. I've put some samples in this link:

http://min.us/mbvimAgjIOEYFk

The small images are the originals and the others are the upscaled. Compare both to see if details are lost or any other artifacts you see.

click on the first image to enter slideshow so that you can see the real size of each image.

What are the mechanics like in Maximum? Regular chaining? Or are there extra modes with grazing, etc?

Awesome news, will buy this tonight at 11 EST.

Sorry man, I´m not feeling it. I dislike any upscaling algorithms that mess with the original pixel art, though on the upside your upscaling method doesn´t seem as extreme as the ones available now so that´s a plus I guess.

Wait what? I just recently bought a Windows Phone, mainly because of DDP Maximum. On the other hand, I wouldn't buy anything from Apple anyway.
Have been playing it a couple of days now and it's pretty good. Only the backgrounds aren't as nice as usual, because they consist only of geometric lines and figures. What's also odd is that after you finish a level, your lives are restored and your score is back to zero. There is no second loop either, instead you can unlock a harder version of every level if you complete the previous one without dying. This also counts for unlocked levels, so the last ones should be really challenging (haven't made it to them yet).

So is Maximum not out yet? Can't find it with search.

Edit: seems I'm a day early, oops!

What say thee.

What's a good price to pick up a Donpachi pcb for?

I've heard this game has somewhat escalated in price.

Both versions go for over $ 300,- now which is about 3 times the price they demanded just 3 years ago .
The international version is just a tad cheaper than a Japanese board .
There's a International version DoDonpachi board right now on Ebay , I wouldn't be surprised if that went over $ 400,- before it ends .

I'm glad I bought all the older CAVE titles when they where still cheap and all I could afford .

Sorry for the noob question but is maximum different from resurrection? They have so many different versions of their games on IOS is gets confusing.

Not quite sure but it does seem to use assets and stuff from the other games, does away with the nice backgrounds in favor of generic stuff. Music is remixes of the old standards. You get to pick your levels in a tree formation akin to Darius, Space Invaders Extreme. Bosses are see-through sim-like versions. Bullets are larger. Game is a score-attack. Controls are just shoot and move. Two fingers on the screen activates your smart bomb.

Seems perfect for an iOS title, actually.

ahh, thought it was up already! Its already 26 in my country so hopefully it will be up in a few hours
Philippines? It should already be up there, if not I'm not sure what's up. Maybe ask Cave on Twitter to make sure they didn't screw up and skip the Philippines on accident.

In the US it should be up in 2-3 hours if it follows the usual release timing, I forget whether they come out at 11pm or midnight EST.

Was debating doing a stream tonight, but ended up doing time attacks in PSO2 instead. Might give it a go before bed but not for long, I have to be up earlier than normal tomorrow.

So pretty, too!

All the pixel grids when the enemies and your (super-detailed ship!) moves. What a cool mash-up with the Resurection stuff and pixel girl bosses from that game. I'm gonna play this game for months. "Presented by Cave" at the beginning...first on an iOS game.

The Ketsui level made me ridiculously happy on top of the Dangun sound bites from the Uo Poko ship.

Edit-and this seems to run better on my iPhone 4 than the other HD games.

That intro is there since this game was built by members of the core CAVE console team: namely the Akai Katana Shin team. It's the first "all-in" CAVE game for mobile and it's beautiful. You can see the care given to the interface etc. which is carried over from Akai Katana Shin.

Now they just need to put out the tour conductor's shoes so I can buy them:

That is neat to know. You can tell they spent time on it. Off the hook on the sensory overload. Crazy good music, too.I kept reading about how they cheaped out on the background but it is anything but that. Very class.

Love the detailed log exactly like the DS Ketsui game. So happy they finally ported it to iOS.

braves01,

Bug Princess 2 BL is exactly like the proper game. It is one of the harder games to play given the format. Boss Rush is not really needed. That makes it not so pricey.

just got home, downloading DoDonPachi Maximum now. Also hoping that Bug Princess 2 Black Label will get a sale before the year ends.
