I'll look for you SMZ! Get on the Novice Ultra boards for something I can challenge. I'm about 70 on Novice Original. If I had not lost that one life I would have gotten 10 million more and been around 30 :-(

New ghetto tate setup for the new weekend. Had so much fun last weekend I pulled everything back out and did it again!

This time I rotated the 42" HDTV and I am piping Ibara vanilla through the XRGB-Mini and a Sigma. Looks gorgeous and works perfectly. 360 on my little RGB tube.

Will have a fun weekend! Cave weekend.

Got Mushihime HD today.

WOW. Bullets move fuckin' fast in this.

I think I'm too drunk to even play this tonight. I got up to stage 4 on my first runthrough, but yeah... it's quick.

I even beat stage three, got to stage four in the arcade last month in Japan. So, Seemingly easy. I Love the Big Stage 3.

Surprised.

They move fast, the bullets, but the game is totally manageable. This and EspGaluda I've been playing recently and I'm in love.

Praying for a localisation.

(play Novice, good on this one)

(so drunk as well. fricken bavarian beer.)

I'm looking for a bit of help, does anyone own Mushihime-sama Futari, Espgaluda II, a scanner, and feel like being a bro? I have platinum hits copies of these and I'd like to print white label copies of the cover art and put them in green 360 cases, but I can't find high-res scans for either of these covers anywhere.

My scanner is quite crappy, so 600 dpi is the best I can do. If it's ok for you, I can scan Espgaluda 2 as well ;)

I could do this, but I own the limited editions, which have different cover art. If you're OK with that...

Looks awesome, thank you! I'd love the Espgaluda II cover as well if you would be so kind. :)

I'm going to give danmaku's covers a shot and see how they turn out. Thanks for offering, I might bug you if they don't turn out well.

Dude, you got it wrong! For best results, put the PCB on the lovely PVM, and the Xbox on the HDTV. Awesome setup by the way.

That is the VGA-only RGB monitor. All I have is a XRGB-Mini...no VGA in and out.

AND, 360 looks way better via VGA on the tube than HDMI on the HDTV. And, I can finally notice the lag HDTVs introduce after doing a side-by-side. Nothing major but runs silky smooth on the CRT.

Been rocking Raiden Fighters Aces the last few hours. Could not figure out how to transfer the save file from the old J-360 to the new so I started a new file..a few hours in towards my 99-hour acheivment.

And, PCB setup was to see how the Mini handles the verticals. First time hooking it up. Had only tried my Mushi-Tama previously.

I can get to the last boss of Mushihime without much difficulty, so I'd say it's a pretty easy game. Now to go for the 1CC! Uh... whenever I get around to playing the main game again. Allz I do is training mode.

I can get to the middle of the last level on Normal. Have not gotten to the boss yet.

Anybody know how to make the 1Up trigger in the snake level? I got it on the iOS version but can't get it here?

And I never noticed, but she rides side saddle(!)

At the bit just before the boss (where there's a significant delay before you can damage anything), the screen gets filled with a core in the middle and walls of targets on the sides. You have to destroy every target before destroying the core to get the 1Up to appear.

Huh. Only took maybe 3 or so hours of rusty playing:

Really, really fun game. I guess I might as well try out Maniac mode. Or try the 1.5 Matsuri mode or whatever it is.

And no, I don't play for score, so I don't care how abysmal mine might (or might not) have been.

I tried today to clear it but no luck :-(

Definitely doable. Everything is so nicely placed, feels very rhythmic. Moreso than other Cave games.

I forgot to bring my Matsuri code...so have not been able to try it yet.

Spent a few hours this weekend with Ibara(s). Game is BRUTAL. Way harder than Garrega.

No pantsu~. Cave always gets the little details right.
—By the way, the heroine Reco... she's not wearing anything down there, is she?

Ikeda: Nope.

—Really! That's part of the official canon?

Ikeda: Yes.

Asada: You mean when she can just go to the bathroom anywhere like that?!

Ikeda: How she uses the toilet isn't set in the official canon, but physically speaking, that's how it would be.

Yeah, it's pretty remarkable how well-designed original is. The game doesn't overwhelm you too much, so you can actually learn the proper way to approach a given situation.

Maniac's not as tough as I'd expected - I tried it once and got to Stage 4. There are way more bullets, but they're not "dangerous" bullets. Most of the bullets are placed in such a way that you won't actually get hit by them, but they make the screen more colorful.

and yes, I loved that Ikeda (lol, I typed his name as Ikea initially) explained that.

I'm a champion of the Novice modes. Usually a throwaway but in this game they are perfect.

Still trying to one-life Novice Original...break 60,000,000.

Novice Ultra is a nice step up from Original. I'd go there after the 1cc you got. At least try it.

I recall from the thread on Shmups that Maniac Normal is in fact easier than Original Normal.

I like your setup , Yes Boss!
Great quality crt and a nice supergun running the real thing .

Yeah, it is fun in but only in a pinch. Now it is Monday and everything is packed back away in the closet. I'll do a new ghetto setup in a few weeks...probably Saturn. Got a bunch of new games recently. I'm a big fan of having multiple things running at once and then choosing. Got lots of cool arcade sticks but no actual cabs.

Got a second Sony Broadcast monitor picked up the day I left cali...can't wait to put them up side by side.

Wish I had your set-up, though ;-( Capcom Mini, sigh.

Novice Ultra is... actually quite fun. Makes you feel like a bad-ass without beating you down... which the game totally knows it could.

Put some time into Daioujou Black Label last night. The game's new to me and I was hitting stage four, so I guess that's something!

I love coming back to playing a great STG after a period of not playing anything in the genre (or maybe a period of not playing arcade games in general). It's always the most refreshing thing.

Wow, that's some really fast progress!

Stage 3 is so good in this game. Everything is so meticulously placed and the there's this rhythm to the level that is really cool. It's like R-Type quality level design.

Mushi Original is really, really good.

The first two stages were kinda underwhelming for me. Thematically the first two stages are pretty similar, and the game doesn't really throw too much stuff at you. But then starting with stage 3 where you fight the giant bug tank, the game just keeps getting better and better. I used to go to the arcade at my school and play it all the time. (Too bad it had a Happ joystick on it.) Great music, atmosphere, bullet patterns, the whole bit. Stages 3, 4, and 5 are a hell of a fun time.

I liked the approach of having faster, but less dense, bullet patterns. Each enemy type shoots a certain pattern, and most of it isn't aimed, so it's not too hard to figure out where you'll be safe from the lightning fast bullets. Just gotta anticipate. I'd say it's probably right around the difficulty of Futari Black Label or Deathsmiles. Really accessible and really good.

Mushi Original is fun, should have beaten it without losing a single life... So close! Once i get off my current Progear addiction/obsession I'll finally go back and finish Maniac.

Mushi is such a great game. Would like to try Futari, but I'm not too sure if I want 1.5 or BL first, kind of leaning more towards BL.

In terms of Maniac, 1.5 is more of a puzzle game oriented around grouping enemies based on their positions: you have to kill popcorn enemies and then mid-sized enemies to trigger large gems, whereas Black Label requires less thinking about enemy positioning. You can just shoot anything and the combo gauge will move towards red.

I would say that 1.5 is technically superior to Black Label in terms of game design for Original and Maniac due to being a more cerebral game, however the scoring is much more liberating and risky in Black Label for both modes. Black Label wins out if you just want to blow some shit up and grind on some gadamn manta rays.

Plus Black Label has God mode, which is the only ultra-hard CAVE mode that is actually both fair and fun, so personally I think this puts it over the top.

I figure I might as well drop this into the discussion too: 1.01 is worth having & playing too, if only for its original mode. I love the original modes in 1.5 and BL as well, but 1.01's is quite different from them. Bullets are fast, maybe not Psikyo-fast but decently faster than the original modes in the subsequent versions.. Playing for survival is an exciting rush on its own, whereas the other two originals are more laid back (but still interesting!) and relaxing. Scoring is more simplified too, like there's no proximity bonus iirc, all gems have the same value. It's really like a more traditional shooter and very enjoyable; worth having around.

So if you haven't bought it yet & if you have the money I'd recommend getting a new LE or a SE that advertises having the DLC card to guarantee getting 1.01. Really dumb of Cave to not have it available as purchasable DLC since it keeps most new buyers away from it. The thing you get from entering the DLC card code is just a 56KB unlock key anyways :/

God, Futari is so good. Each revision is practically 3 different games. That's value!

Question for those who've played Mushi1 (I haven't yet unfortunately '~'): is the original mode in the first game more like the 1.01 original or the 1.5/BL originals in Futari?

Man, they both sound good! Thanks for the feedback guys. 1.01 wasn't on the radar to be honest, it sounds fun too but it seems like a tough board to find. Ahh, decisions decisions...

Either way I got plenty to go after next. One of the Futari revs is definitely my next purchase, I'll probably will be getting both eventually, then maybe another hori like Deathsmiles or AK.

Oh, you're buying PCBs? That makes it a more tough choice then...

Futari 1.0/1.01 (I don't think there were 1.01 PCBs made, it's just a bugfixed version of 1.0 for the 360 port afaik, I could be wrong though) PCBs are incredibly rare to find because most of them were converted to 1.5s for free by Cave. If you managed to find one it'd probably be quite costly.

You're right, I'm thinking 1.0, 1.01 was the port. And I'd rather have the board as I got the hardware and setup for them. :)

You can rig up a 360 to JAMMA and even downscale it for true 240p output :<

Futari is the game I'd say it's most worth it for, because all 3 modes are worth having around and obtaining the PCBs for them all of them is incredibly expensive.

Plus the port is near perfectly accurate in terms of slowdown and such.

I got the Akai Katana art book a little earlier (thanks again, adverse!). AK has some of the nicest art in any Cave game, so I'm glad to have the complete collection. There's also some commentary and developer interviews, but I can't read them yet. ;~;

Those Futari faceplate stickers were a nice bonus too! Now I'm tempted to replace my Death Smiles faceplate.

On Futari 1.5 vs. BL: I prefer Original and Maniac in 1.5, but BL's God Mode might just be my favorite mode of the bunch. So you can't go wrong either way.

I'd say it's more like 1.01: fast bullets and no scoring system aside from "kill everything and don't die".

Cool it got there!
But looks like the second package didn't make it yet ;).

But glad you liked the art book and stickers. Maybe you could ask Blackoak at shumps to translate those dev interviews...
