The Mega-Cave Shooter Post, because they're totally awesome and sweet

When talking about Cave games, maybe it should be said that it's less hard, rather than easier.

Seriously, this last boss is just...stupid

You think he's dead after the third form, NOPE CRISSCROSSING BULLET PATTERN, NIGGA

seriously, the last espgaluda boss is really the only insane thing about the game. It's really not to difficult to 1CC up to that boss otherwise.

What I did is I would wait until I was almost trapped and then fire a bomb and quickly run to the side before it could hit him (so he wouldn't get healed), run back to the center and repeat. You should really only need to do that in the second half of the pattern when things speed up and get tighter, so it shouldn't take more than 1 life's worth of bombs. Most of the final boss's third health bar is a bitch, but the rest of the game should be fairly reasonable if you're familiar with it.

Finally received Espgaluda2 and Mushihime sama Futari ordered a month ago.

First thing, I really enjoyed these 2 games, they are completely different from the caves we have in EU imo, especially Mushihime sama. I mostly played Mushihime sama, I got 1CC on the first try on the Arrange mode Original
easy but proud nonetheless
.

If you guys can help me, I have some questions about the gameplay.
What's the difference between the Xbox mode and Arcade mode? To me, it's the same gameplay system except the fact that the graphics are not the same and the slowdowns are kind of different.
I don't really know how the scoring system works in the game : I play in 1.5 - Original to get used to the game, I saw that the extends were at 100M and 200M in this mode but I hardly get to 75M in middle of stage 3.

If you have any info or links that might help, It'll be great.

You're right, the only difference between Xbox mode and Arcade mode are the graphics, the game is exactly the same.

As for the scoring system, Original is very simple: you need to destroy the enemies with the right type of shot to get more gems. When the counter on the top left is green, use the normal shot, when the counter is blue, use the laser. The counter switches every 500 gems you pick up.

Thanks I didn't noticed the color changes in game... :/
I saw some screenshots of the game and you can barely see them. I think I'll have to add an extra screen to see my counter.

To be nitpicky: Espgaluda II's Arcade mode preserves the tutorial gem glitch from the arcade version, while the glitch is absent in the 360 version.

I love playing through Espgaluda II. <3 Only thing getting in my way from beating it with a sane amount of continues is that last crisscross bit. x:

Espgaluda II is the next system I need to tackle and try to learn. I've had a hard time surviving a lot of it, so it should be tough.

Not much to do with the games other than being a nerd, but here's something you can do with CarrierEditor:

Oh sure it is all fun and games getting EVAC as a phone carrier now, but by the 2050s we could have them as the worlds biggest arms dealer and have the Earth on the brink of destruction. No thanks.

Nothing boner-inducing about that video. But, I'm thinking it was some type-of reference video for that animation that eventually made it into the game. The game has dreadful art so the less-than-pleasing girl combined with the oversized costumes kinda make sense, perhaps using this as a starting point, I guess.

Bueno: Part of the full kit with a shit-load of other crap as well...even that shitty little doll that comes with the PS2 LE of Mushi (included as a topper?).

Oh come on that girl is kind of cute, though I hope she was at least 18 when that was shot. Weird little video, never even heard of its existence so thanks for sharing a part of Cave history with us.

EDIT. It does make sense that they would base the in game Recco animations off from this, movements are too similar to those in game little vids I´ve seen of Tama.

Nice. But, you know what, I'm weirded out buy all those people drawings for some reason. The air ship in the sky, totally normal, the humans, super creepy. WTF?!

That illustration is from Tomahoru Saito right? I find Saito´s style particularly unnerving as well, perhaps it is the stare into the distance in thar particular illustration that makes it unnatural.

Too bad there´s not much more art to be found on the net, besides whats posted on World of Arcades.

Dang. I just google'ed his name, and it looks like he's the guy is responsible for my least favorite Cave art (Ketsui). Damn, I hate to talk shit about any artist, but his stuff just does not do anything for me, except induce vomit...

Ketsui´s lowest point was definitely its artwork, I must agree. I miss the Joker Jun´s era in Cave games back in the late 90s, ESP.RaDe and Guwange being his best works IMO.

For the SH3 era I like Galuda II art direction the best, Futari being a distant second, and disliking everything else. Good thing I don´t play these games for its artwork.

I really want to try a Cave shmup, but I don't have an Xbox 360... Is there a reliable way I can emulate one on my MacBook (running either Mac OS or Windows)?

I tried downloading MAME on Windows and a Rom of the Dodonpachi Black Label game, but it didn't work.

Please help me experience this legendary bullet hell. Thanks.

PS My experience with bullet hell is Ikaruga, Castle of Shikigami 3, Metal Torrent(dsiware), and eXceed series.

Do you have an iOS device? That's the other best way.

MAME can emulate older Cave stuff like DonPachi, DoDonPachi, ESP Ra.De, Dangun Feveron, and Guwange with ease. You can also get the PSX versions of DonPachi and DoDonPachi over PSN if you make a Japanese account. As well as the iOS stuff.

There was a version of Ketsui ported to the NDS, but it wasn't a full game, just a boss rush.

This. Just play the old stuff if you want to try their games, that's actually how I got into them in the first place around 12 years ago. I used to do the full MAME set thing back then and went through screenshots looking for neat looking stuff as a "ROM of the week" for some friends. One day I came across ESP.Ra.De's funky screenshot with a bunch of hand bullet things and got blown away.

(I also got really good at keyboard controls)

Damn, everytime this thread is pushed to the front I hope for a new Cave 360, iOS or ... VITA announcement. :(
And yeah, I know that they canceled the vita game.

How do you guys even play a shmup on a tiny iPhone screen?

With your thumb!

It's not really a problem if you have decent eyes. It just needs some getting used to. I have most of the iOS Cave games on xbox or on mame, but I really like to play them on my iphone. It's just so convenient to play 1-2 stages during a bus or train ride! :)

Me too!

Except I already sort of knew about Cave, and just wanted to try their stuff out. I played a little bit of DoDonPachi and then immediately bought the Saturn port.

Kind an arbitrary question, but one that has been bugging me and hopefully a japanese speaker can clarify. In Mushihimesama, what is it that Princess Reco says as the game starts. I always here "Do me!" Wanna know what it really means.

I hear "junbi" 準備, which translates to "ready?"

Ittekimasu ( 行ってきます) would make sense, roughly meaning "I´m leaving" or "I´m going" and I´ve heard it used as an expression said when leaving or arriving at home or a familiar place.

Don´t really remember much more voice samples from Mushihimesama, my only exposure to the game was with a friend´s copy of the PS2 version a long time ago.

Not actually that important
iPad Mini is ideal. HD version look really great too (since they max out at 1024 res, not retina iPad res).

Hey Zeth!
I wish it was that way, but I'm rockin' a Mini and Cave's HD stuff is unplayable: 30fps and DDP:R is basically one huge slowdown. Night and day when compared with the performance you get from the iPhone/ Universal apps.

This has been naggin' me a LOT, I was really looking forward to play DDP:R HD and ESP2 HD on the Mini with that sweet form factor, sigh :(

Really? I've played Galuda II and Daifukkatsu HD just fine on iPad2, which has very similar specs to the mini AFAIK. Both have performance akin to the 360 ports as far as I can tell.

So both Dodonpachi Resurrection and Espgaluda II have been unplayable on my Verizon Galaxy S3 since the 4.1.1 OS update last month.

The games run, but you see nothing but a black screen unless you press the volume button constantly. I don't know where I can make a complaint so that the right people see the problem and it hopefully gets fixed. One thing I know for sure is that G-Gee sucks.

Yep.
I don't see how the Lite versions would be any different from the proper releases since that's never been the case for Cave's iOS stuff, but maybe someone with a Mini and both the full and Lite versions can test it out.

Not bad, after two weeks of play (was waiting to get a dedicated vert monitor set up) I finally 1-ALL'ed Original Mode in MFBL. Certainly my quickest Cave 1 credit so far! I think I'm going to continue playing Original for now and work on getting a higher score before I switch over to Maniac.

Ha,

I've never one-credited anything!

Also,

Been playing a bunch of Ketsui the last month or so (an hour here and there, about ten hours logged) and I'm actually getting better!

And, my mind was blown...been playing X-Mode the entire time, thinking it was easier. In fact, I think it is harder. Tried normal and it was much, much more forgiving despite not having the pink cancelling ships.
