The Nostalgia Critic |OT| He Remembers It So You Don't Have To

To be fair, Linkara has to juggle between the ever-popular AT4W on top of various other projects, and fans have always gotten particularly antsy about HOPR, so he's going to get irritated now and again. Not really fair to call him a diva or anything.

To this day he's still one of my fav movie reviewers and I've seen just about all his episodes, will watch Monster Squad soon though.

I still maintain that Doug's NC videos have definitely gotten better ever since he came back to it in the wake of the utter failure of Demo Reel. The bi-weekly schedule has worked out for the better in the long run. In general, he's gotten a lot better at joke delivery - to the point where his older videos are a bit hard to watch with how awkward and forced the jokes were.

Then again, a lot of that simply comes from growing more comfortable with being on-camera as time goes on.

bitching about shit like this is something you do with your buddies/coworkers, not directly to the people who you're providing content for.

This is such a common problem among all of these reviewers, really. Linkara definitely rants the longest, but it's no different in principle than Doug going on 5 minute long detours about how valid it is for you to have your own opinion (thanks, Doug!).

I think it's just really tempting to do it, and if you haven't had any kind of training or experience in production to show you why you shouldn't do it, that temptation is gonna be hard to overcome.

doug will do it with rob at pretty much any opportunity they get, especially in the avatar videos. it's really really annoying (i've stopped watching those - the adventure time ones were better).

james rolfe and rocco and the mega 64 guys, along with phelous, brad jones, and lindsay ellis are all good by me for various reasons. like i think they all do it because they like having fun and really don't have huge egos. i haven't seen the angry video game nerd movie, but the vibe i get from it is more that it's a passion project, where kickassia, suburban knights, and to boldly flee were more ego projects. and you don't have to look any further than how much doug loves the nostalgia critic as a character.

and i still kinda like doug. i don't think he's a bad person or anything. i just wish he could see things from an outside perspective.

Err what. While I don't really like Linkara's voice and I don't like when he goes on and on about a single point, he has a reason for doing this especially if you know where he's coming from. You should really check out rangerboard to see why he reacted like this.

Besides, you can fast-forward if you want to. That's the beauty of videos.

err what

why do people really like to believe those videos are ego stroking? If anything it looks like a bunch of folks doing a shitty video just for fun. You guys re pretty much seeing something which isn't there and try to pin it down on small stuff.

they've been repeatedly saying those "it's your opinion this is mine" because, you know what, their fans are terrible at that. They use their videos and cite them as some sort of citation. And even detractors forget that too. Sometimes things that are obvious have a tendency to fly over people.

you can engage your fans, but don't do it in a mainstream way. what linkara does sounds like he's shaming the unwanted fanbase in front of basically everyone. i watch this shit casually, whenever it comes along, so seeing whatever minidrama on the forefront of really any video is kind of stupid. context is fine, and context is important - if linkara wants to talk about his personal history with a show and stuff, that's cool. if he wants to talk about the process in some sort of commentary track, i won't listen to it, but it's fine. if he wants to complain about a subset of his fans, the one venue that he really shouldn't do it at all is in the one that will garner hundreds of thousands of views. it puts him in a negative light and it comes across as super childish.

the ego thing is more or less how the creators see themselves. doug walker is a workaholic. i kind of get him. i don't dislike him either. i think he loves nostalgia critic too much. he literally made the character the center of the universe in a scene that was essentially bookended by how much doug walker loved the nostalgia critic. contrast this with phelous who constatly berates himself and jokes that his show has been going downhill since mac and me (his first one). it's a lot easier to like the guy who doesn't take things too seriously versus the one who takes everything super seriously.

and i know what their opinion is. i didn't talk about that part in particular, but they really don't need to come out and say that their lists are their opinion. i mean fucking duh it is.

if you have a fanbase, the best you can do is really just broadly address concerns in a fairly quiet way and just wait for that shit to die down, and continue to interact with the people who actually want to see more from you. stoking the flames is a bad idea.

The 4-chan thing seems pretty plausible. It's not like there are any outrageous things there. Mostly descriptions of socially awkward people, which given their interest is pretty understandable.

But the criticism that is more valid than all this other stuff is about Doug's abilities as a film maker. His stuff really suffers from the production values. Lighting and audio in his videos has been worse than almost every other youtube-type personality that has had his level of success. And considering most of his videos are just him sitting in the same location indoors in front of a camera, it's pretty baffling.

While I agree on that (it affects the lengths of the videos), I guess the fanbase really needs some talking to. PR fanbase is really, really... let's just say, volatile.

I guess I don't really see the NC-favoritism thing, since I never really treat their works seriously, but eh.

As for the fanbase, I guess it's just a matter of engaging them. Seeing the insane side is really creepy, and he's not the only one with an insane fanbase.

You should see what /v/ invented for AVGN. That he married an SJW and that he's drunk. Bunch of shit like that. That's why it's better to take a lot of them with a grain of salt.

And that's true, but honestly when the bulk of your review is really just showing the film while you talk about something in it, I don't think he prioritizes it more.

The thing is, nothing will ever be helped by spending a bunch of time in the video explaining that they shouldn't do it. It just calls attention to it and the people who do it just don't give a shit. It's just an incredible waste of time for everyone involved. Do you think this kind of thing is unique to internet videos? No, every kind of performance has those kinds of 'fans'. How many tv shows, movies, plays, books, etc. have you seen explicitly call out fan behaviour, though?

If I went to a play and the actors stood around for 5 minutes before the play started, complaining about the things the audience of the last show did after they left the show, I'd probably walk out.

true, but you can also skip those in videos thankfully

and honestly I haven't seen Doug do this outside of his commentaries, which are technically not part of his "show" if you catch my drift, as opposed to say, Linkara

Oh man, I remember the Skip-It commercials and that Campbell's Soup one. & from what I understand, that Nintendo one was from...Australia, I think?

I think the Campbell's Snowman one still airs today.

Those "out of ideas" TMNT toys were hilarious. Trying to get that gravy train to keep rolling as long as possible.
When it ran out, they simply built a similar one that was closer to the original instruction manual (comic book), and when that ran out they made another new one.

Yeah, the Nintendo commercial was from Australia

Wow, it does bring back a lot of memories. Also, Doug probably doesn't know this, but there was an Incredible Crash Dummy cartoon at the time.

there are 2 nick jr channels? wtf

lmao Lalaloopsie Diaper Surprise, this is scat

Mighty Max and Creepy Crawlies had cartoons too.

I dunno what exactly led to Shyamalan being hyped to high fucking heaven during/after Sixth Sense, but I think it's a shame that it happened. His first three films (Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs) are all pretty good taken without cultural context and show a distinct and interesting vision, but the pedestal he was shoved onto makes people tear them down for legitimate but overblown reasons.

But after that? He clearly ran out of good ideas and he was able to make films that he really shouldn't have been able to and it just compounded the problem.

If he'd come up slower and with less hype I really think we'd be getting some great work out of him now.

There are a lot of reasons not to like Signs (particularly if you get hung up on certain arguments about aliens vs. demons and what they would or wouldn't do), but technically it's well done and it's a pretty suspenseful film. It's not bad in the way his later work is. Compare the way intensity is built up in it to The Happening, for example, where you're literally asked to be scared of wind.

Are any of you guys enjoying the new talent, so far? Calluna, Rantasmo and Ursa have been keeping my attention.

Rantasmo is awesome (though I've seen some of his stuff before he joined so...)
I liked Count Jackula's videos so far
And of course SFDebris, but he's on a different level.

I need to try some of the new video game content. Maybe there will be a gem.

I don't think I agree with NC's idea that everybody likes Sixth Sense, +1 of M Night's movies, and that the +1 is usually different.

Everybody liked Sixth Sense, and people were expected to like Unbreakable, so for the most part I think they did (and the movie itself never really gave people reason to dump M Night). I think it was Signs when cracks started to appear in M Night's popularity. And after Signs, it just gets harder and harder to find anyone taking him seriously.

Also, I don't think that Unbreakable's twist ending said particularly unsettling things about destiny, and the lack of free will (although NC might have read into it, and felt disturbed, which is completely fair).

Samuel L Jackson's character is shown to be a tormented character. He retreats into comic books, and due to his pain, he needs to believe that superheroes exist, with physical strength opposite to his own physical weakness. He needs to believe that his suffering is destiny, and that it's the price that someone must pay for a superhero to exist in the real world. He's willing to shoulder the cost of creating a superhero, therefore he's willing to endure the pain which is his life. He manages to convince Bruce Willis' character (and the audience) that he's really on to something. That should be the core of the "destiny vs free will" argument, and it carries enough implications to comfort or disturb.

Then for the twist,
it's shown that Jackson's character's need for destiny/a superhero is so strong that he's played this game before, and that he's killed thousands in his search for a superhero, and that beyond physicality, he shouldered the burden of being a villain, the opposite of a hero.
I don't think that's a frightening lack of free will, it's a frightening series of choices made by a severely-damaged individual who strongly believes in destiny. I think it becomes a lack of free will issue if you believe that it was destiny, but if it's destiny, then it's hard to feel for Jackson's character, because he seems pretty pleased with himself.

Hmmm. He says he's only doing the Ghibli/Miyazaki films released by Disney, but I wonder if he is making an exception for "Grave of the Fireflies". I thought I caught a clip of it in the opening montage.

Also too bad he won't be doing Castle of Cagliostro.

Yeah, kind of a bummer he's not doing all of them. I understand he won't do ones that weren't dubbed, but it'd help fill the month out more if he were to cover ones not released under Disney or one of their companies (i.e Touchstone because Princess Mononoke was PG-13 & considered too violent to be released under the Disney name).

I've only seen bits and pieces over the years because Cartoon Network keeps airing it. No idea why..

Haven't watched Nostalgia Critic in years. Got a bit of a backlog to catch up on. Hopefully its still good. Hopefully the old stuff holds up.
